Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc
“how do i reconcile the creative’s wrongdoing with my liking of their work” you just do. like this is exactly why ideas around ~art~ and who can produce it i.e. innately good people with a pure soul are absolute horseshit. in terms of film, roman polanski and woody allen are both reprehensible rapists, but whereas woody allen makes shit movies roman polanski’s rosemary’s baby and repulsion are astute horror films, all the more eerie and effective when you measure the deft pinpointing of patriarchy as an oppressive and radicalizing structure against polanski’s own crimes. to “divorce the artist from the art” would be disingenuous, and is rooted in the notion that ~art~ can possibly be unblemished, pure, unmired in conflict, i.e. mindless entertainment, but that doesn’t work by virtue of film and tv shows being commodities within a capitalist structure. so just sit with the discomfort i guess. and steal. whenever you can, steal. anyway here’s wonderwall (repulsion for free on youtube)
Process post for this piece.
A while ago I came across Alma Haser’s Within 15 Minutes and I was really inspired to do something visually similar for Louis. This was the first draft I did. I didn’t feel too confident about it at the time so I put it in the scraps pile and didn’t think about it anymore. Months later when the prompts for ldpdlweek came out I decided to revise the idea a bit and I like the new direction a lot more; it shows Louis playing an active role in putting together pieces of himself and reconciling with who he is despite the circumstances he was up against. I was also trying to reference the first scene of the show where Daniel was putting together a puzzle.
I didn’t save the drafts for the newer version because the file was kinda huge so I had to clean up and delete stuff as I go (a bit nerve-racking for me, honestly). But here’s a gif of how all the layers come together (colors of the gif is a bit off but oh well):
Also I drew Louis’ portraits separately and put them together after, here’s what they look like in full:
