scarlett: the 16 y/o boy who spends all his spare time boxing who punched a wall when he was angry and broke the head of his fifth metacarpal ie that place in your hand that you break if you punch something and you don’t make a fist properly (your fifth knuckle) and he said his boxing coach was going to be mad with him and i asked if he’d learnt his lesson and he said probably not

scott: the 18 y/o boy who hurt his elbow and i asked him what happened and he said he hurt his elbow and i asked him where the pain was and he said in his elbow and i asked him if it was the inside or outside or closer to the forearm or upper arm and he said in my elbow 

matt: the 16 y/o long suffering girl with scoliosis who comes into the room and knows what shes doing more than i know what she’s doing. she gives me all her details in the right order and answers pregnancy questions before i ask and stands up in the perfect position with an air of “please let this be the last”

jamie: the cool 15 y/o with sickle cell disease. grumbles when i wake him up for his chest x-ray. would rather stay in his trolley under his blanket. grudgingly stands up for his xray only to huddle back under his blanket as soon as it is done. 

pedro: that 13 year old french boy. i speak to him in broken french, he raises an eyebrow and talks back in almost perfect english with a strong accent and a dismissive attitude and ‘ oui it does hurt when you’re moving my wrist like that’ and i think he’s swearing at me in french but i’m bad at french and only know merde so he also might not be. he’s definitely thinking it.

bonus richard: this 27 year old man who’s convinced hes broken his humerus and i position him and it hurts him but he’s like no it’s fine i just want the images i just want it seen to and he’s like it’s broken isn’t it i know it is, and i neither confirm nor deny (it is very very broken) and he’s like well can i see? and i’m like well it’s pretty dramatic are you sure you want to? and he’s like please and so i do and then he nearly faints

Parents of disabled children aren't victims. An adult isn't a hero for looking after a disabled kid, especially when that particular kid is THEIR CHILD!!! That's what a parent is SUPPOSED to do! Stop glorifying those parents like disabled children are burdens

i work with families who are literally going through insecure housing because the disability services in the US is so bad. it isn't ableist to acknowledge that parents of disabled kids have to make lots of sacrifices and that they are often in extremely precarious situations.

scenario: you are a single mother. your youngest child has autism and is unable to stay at school all day. you have to quit your job so that you can be there for him and help him with all of his ADLs. you are on a long waitlist for an autism specific program. he is on a disability waiver but you can't find reliable support staff, so you rely on the waiver reimbursement to provide for your family, but this is significantly less than you need. your landlord pushes you out partially because of your financial situation. your child is violent to you and your other children nearly daily and causes significant damage in the home. you are always stressed. you have your own mental health concerns too. now you have to be out of your house with your kid in 1 month and have nowhere to go and no idea if your son will be safe.

another scenario: you are a 60 year old woman. you work full time as a teacher. your severely disabled son is 26 years old and needs 24/7 care. you know the best place for him to live is at home with you, but you can only find staff to work during the hours you teach. the rest of your and your husbands days are spent taking care of your son, including the nighttime so you usually only get 3-4 hours of sleep. you haven't gone on vacation for 10 years. you now have chronic pain and back problems but you will do almost anything but entrust your sons care to strangers who don't love him like you do.

i absolutely think the parents i work with in situations like these are amazing people. they love their kids so much and have given up so much for them. that love is so incredibly strong and amazes me every day. the kids are also wonderful and strong and deserve all the love and support in the world. however some of these parents especially in scenario 1, constantly feel like they are failing their kids, because the system is set up to fail them, and they are expected to be literally superhumans -- so when they experience moments of struggle requiring they take care of themselves, they feel so guilty. so i think it's v important to show that you see how much they are going through and that they are doing as much as they can, because these parents often feel hopeless. if you go around trying to make people think that these aren't significant struggles for the family that other families don't have to go through, you are just pretending that the US has a disability services system that values & supports disabled people, and doesn't function to force disabled people and their families into poverty. if we can't acknowledge the problem, how will we be able to we fix it and improve the quality of life for disabled people and their families?
