In John 8:47, Jesus is speaking to a group of people who have been consistently rejecting his message, despite the fact that he has been teaching them the truth. In this passage, Jesus makes it clear that their rejection of him is not due to any lack of understanding on their part. Rather, it is because they are not truly “of God.” They have not been open to the truth that Jesus is teaching because they do not have the right spirit within them. This verse speaks to the importance of having a receptive heart when we are hearing the word of God. If we harden our hearts and refuse to listen, we will miss out on the life-changing truths that God wants to teach us.

In the eighth chapter of John, Jesus is teaching in the temple when the scribes and Pharisees bring a woman to him who has been caught in the act of adultery. Under Jewish law, she is to be stoned to death, but Jesus says that the one who is without sin should cast the first stone. When no one steps forward, he tells the woman to go and sin no more. The scribes and Pharisees then begin to question Jesus' authority, and he responds by saying that if they obeyed his words, they would know that he has been sent by God. He goes on to say that whoever is of God hears the words of God, and that the reason they do not hear them is because they are not of God. This verse is often used to support the idea that those who are not saved will not understand or accept the gospel message. However, it can also be interpreted more broadly to mean that those who are not in a right relationship with God will not understand or accept his truth. Either way, this verse underscores the importance of hearing and obeying the word of God.
