"sold it?!" niamh screams, like the last bit of patience within him snaps at last. it suddenly feels far too hard to breathe: is vision blurs in and out of focus as he stares at the stranger's back. "you SOLD it?!" he repeats, coming closer but only to snatch the velvet box back into his grasp. it's his. the box is his, the necklace is his.
" fuck! how could you do that?! " he screams again, hands digging into his hair as he paces. he sold it. he sold it! how could he sell it - how could he sell anything of the sort?! made by the sea itself, curated under the magic of his people for centuries: crafted for his own mother before she even was a mere thought - definitely not made to be sold by an idiot who has no idea of its worth!
"who did you sell it to?!" he asks, more urgently and a less violent, if one were to ignore the trembling fingers curling around zane's arm. only to bring him closer! "just tell me who you sold it to, and for how much."

the walk, aspen soon enough comes to find out, happens to be rather boring. sure, the flowers look pretty - but they look as pretty as they did yesterday. her gaze lays on the greenhouse at the far end of the rather large gardens: her end goal, where she often spends most of her days. still, today, she finds herself hoping for more. today, there is a guest! a very tall, quite beautiful guest!
gods, apsen hopes that she is making a good impression!
not that it matters, anyways. she knows that things like good impressions are rather trivial when it comes to her. she is the princess of aurevia, she is a courtemanche: that her first impression. one that will follow her up until she breathes her last breath.
the breath that does fly past her lips isn't her last, but it is sharp and filled with surprise. "did they not teach you how to walk in that knight school of yours?" she asks once fully pulled out of her reveries, and while it should sound terribly rude, she somehow makes it sound light and playful. her hands against her dress are as soft as her tone, attempting to get rid of any crease that might have formed.
"maybe this is a sign that you should walk closer! you don't have to be so far. . . how would that work, anyway? what if someone attacks me from there?" she halts in her steps, pointing at an empty bush. "or there." she adds, pointing now at the tree above them.
"huh. i guess that is a rather good question to ask. how would you handle it? hmm?"

it was inevitable for her to get to this moment. she knew as she grew up that there would a time for tighter security. she never truly understood what said security would imply: well - she had some sort of idea. someone to follow her around everywhere, to accompany her through her many boring ( but important ! ) duties, to maybe - hopefully - throw a punch or two if necessary.
they let her know that it is all in process a month or so before their first meeting, but even before that, aspen had her mind set. and like it often goes, all she must do is ask. she mentions the red hair, like the knight is a blazing flame to which the princess strangely is the moth. she mentions the armour to them, too, how polished it always seems in contrast to the others.
moonstone is the knight's name. even that sounds noble.
though she does expect more of a . . . glamourous meeting. certainly not one where she has to force herself awake, resisting the urge to rub her eyes away from the remaining sleep that lay within them. regardless, her smile could not be wider as she stares down at the knight before her. her knight - oh! - how exciting! her very first knight!
her mind roars with imagination as she steps closer, much - much closer, almost as if examining her brand new trinket. "definitely up to my standards." is the first real thing aspen says, not caring for the silence she breaks and even less of the people in the room staring at them. a widened gaze lands on her knight's hair and the small part of her lips happens. she stares at the red of it in awe, in wonder.
"thank you, my dear commander. you have yet to disappoint my family." she grins over at him, twirling in place and enjoying the way the fabric of her dress follows. "well, as exciting as this has been, i must be off for my morning walk! i've had many riveting dreams to reminisce on." aspen adds, her smile not falterring once.
"i shall be left alone." she explains ever so kindly to the commander, hand resting against the gold of their chest plate lightly, fleetingly. she begins to walk towards the exit then, only to stop after a few steps and look back, her piercing but awed gaze setting on her knight.

somehow, somewhat, in the midst of this little chaos unfolding right before niamh's eyes, the stranger manages to prove that rock bottom has not yet been reached. honestly, it's a shock. not only did the nymbra come to terms with meeting that checkpoint long ago, he would also argue that the act of following zane home tonight could be a brand new rock bottom of its own. way below the way he's been living for the past few weeks. wayyy past the bargains he's been making, past the black - disgusting goo he's been coughing up at night.
and it's not even the fact that he's being thrown out of some random guy's room for possible assault ( the water was cold, alright? no need to make a fuss. ) - it's not even the fact that he might be wrong about this ( he isn't wrong, he's never been wrong and this is definitely not the night for a new first. )
no, it's the fact that zane, out of everyone he's ever met, is taking him for an idiot.
and niamh, once more, is many things. "oh! oh, sure, you don't have it! don't mind me, then!" yeah, he's many things. he's defintiely the type to throw clothes out of drawers, and books out from under zane's bed. "where the hell did you put it?!" he's also the kind to rely on the scent his necklace's magic leaves. like a frantic animal, eyes wide and dark as he looks, and looks, and looks. " WHERE is it ?! " he's the kind to let his voice strain with stress, with panic, with the need and yearn to find it.
he is many things, but he is not an idiot.
"what did you do with it? WHERE is it?!" he repeats himself upon finding an empty little box, one he could recognize anywhere. with its velvet finish: black under one light, navy blue under another. empty - completely empty.

𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭. one that leaves caishen bitter - and he tries not to be, honestly, but it often feels like the grounds of myrithen were made to reject him. for every step he makes, there is a push back. every breath he takes feels like one he has stolen from the land: it shows up in his dreams, this feeling of dread. the land saved him, once, it had been a blessing. he heard it in his mother's cries and in his father's soft snoring by the bedside. the one he didn't leave until caishen got better - not once.
not once.
but the blessing eventually began to feel like a curse. the cries of joy turned into snide remarks over the dinner table, and caishen isn't even sure if his father sleeps, now. the only place where he doesn't hear the land bargain for payback is in the forge and even on his way there, on some nights, he could swear that the dirt beneath his boots tries to drag him within the ground.
but there is light is what he forces himself to believe. there is light in the little things, isn't there? tonight, his light manifests himself by the entrance of the forge, and no matter how loud the metal clangs, jesse's voice is louder. always louder. "hey," he breathes back instantly, tools put down and his attention fully on his twin. he is eager to know more, and his heart skips worryingly once he notices the bags. it's the first thing he notices.
the parting, he has imagined it many times. it was bound to happen, and to claim that caishen was oblivious to it would be useless. he doesn't lie, always been bad at it. he just never expected it to feel this way. he never expected the surge of hope upon seeing the two bags. two: like them. a pair. and sure, jesse only has one bedroll, but that doesn't matter. caishen can sleep on the ground - they can take turns - he can buy one.
he expected it to hurt, but he didn't expect it to steal the breath of his lungs so violently. i'm setting off soon. i'm setting off. i'm. alone. he didn't think betrayal could feel so heavy, so dizzying.
"what?" caishen says, or whispers, shaking his head a little as he stares at his mirror. "you can't leave tonight." he adds after a good second of processing, laughing a little. for a split second, it feels like they are younger and jesse is telling him some silly idea that caishen used to be so good at dismissing. "you don't even have a sword - or a bow - " he adds, dread rapidly filling his stomach. "is that why you're here?"

the more zane speaks, the more niamh's despair grows. he is a patient man: back home, he is soft spoken and calm, with an edge of wit that gathers compliments on most days. and he knows things, niamh. like how to care for the specific spells that only his kind knows, and he is educated. but in front of the other, as not only the slurring but the scent of alcohol reminds him how out of it zane seems to be, he feels helpless. like a child bargaining at the market, begging for the slightest sliver of aid. the turn of events did a great job at sobering the nymbra - at least, enough to take action.
maybe it's what zane needs in order to snap out of whatever reverie he seems to be in. besides, niamh has been a little curious to see how his magic holds on land.
he leans in carefully, growing rather aggravated by the broken promises the other speaks. does he seem like an idiot? does he seem this out of place - gullible enough to believe that they truly wake up tomorrow and begin the search for a long lost necklace no one - apparently - knows about?! still. niamh takes his time, leans into the other even more, allows his eyes to really take in the charm of the other. "colourblind?" a whisper, and a laugh, the brush of their lips. "you'll help me look? myrithen is not as big as i may think?" soft, amused, almost.
seriously, such a shame. zane really is so handsome.
"stupid!" he groans, vividly different from the way he's been acting, the anger within him rising at last. the water he conjures manifests within seconds by the palm of his hand, cold and loud as it splashes straight on zane's face. "where. the. hell. is. my. 𝑵𝑬𝑪𝑲𝑳𝑨𝑪𝑬 ?! give it back to me!"
he tries his hardest not to actually hurt him, not to be too forceful. because niamh is good, and he is kind, and hopefully one day he really will be able to repent for this. but for now, in a darkened myrithen room, he holds onto zane's blouse far too tight, eyes filled with furry and a little bit on insanity.

niamh feels his eye twitch first. if a request to recount this fated night would fall onto him, the only thing he could mention in clear mind would be the intense furry burning him whole - from his toes to the top of his head. well, the desperation would be there, too. because the way he stares at the necklace is nothing if not desperate. there is a pull to it: from the second he sees it, he knows that he had been wrong - and yet - he still tries. though his magic is greatly weakened, he still tries to look past any charm that may be covering it. he gets in close, a little too close and even lingers when zane puts it away.
but he is wrong, there is no denying it. it isn't the necklace.
"huh?" he responds, distracted and clearly perplexed by this turn of events. he is wrong, how can he be wrong? has it all been for nothing? there is a pull that he feels - he begins pacing. he isn't wrong, no, it can't be. there is a pull, it's there, close. he feels it by the tip of his fingers, he feels the magic his necklace emits. all he has to do is calm down. his gaze lays on the stranger and all of his charm is practically gone.
right. he nearly forgot about him.
"no, no sorry. i think you're mistaken." he responds with a laugh. because zane is mistaken, and because niamh is on the verge of losing it. "as pretty as this gem is. . . they described it as a locket. and the gem is of a dark, navy blue. like. . . god, what was it that they said?" he trails off, hoping and praying to the seas that his voice remains as calm as he needs it to be. he disregards the question in regards of his own clothing, fingers reaching to take care of zane's buttons for him, though all he does is undo one and button it back up a few times.
slowly, to distract him, to ease him. to buy time.
"like the depths of the arctic sea." he says at last, staring up at him, dark blue eyes of his own piercing through him.

myrithen, to niamh, is a realm that had only been read up on in books and ancient texts, and so the hesitance to step foot into it can be quite easy to understand (especially considering how realms are portrayed in nymbra literature: bad, horrible, a little less bad but still bad, and super bad). he always surprises himself this way - long are the days where such a thing as hesitance are allowed - and yet, it is a luxury that niamh finds himself indulging it a little too often. he was hesitant to walk on solid ground even though he hardly had a choice, he was hesitant to speak the shared language of orion, his accent far too obvious and far too present and he was hesitant to walk past the gates of myrithen, his large darkened cloak the only thing offering a semblance of protection.
it takes a few drinks for the realm to grow on him.
he's heard it many times, from many different sources: the one you are seeking is always here three hours past sunset, with a few faces who often come back, here and there. like a rotation of people to entertain each night, with the one he has been chasing in the center of it all. and so, niamh shows up in advance because the boy is many things, but unprepared will never be one of them. it feels like he is at the climax of the story: countless weeks, trailing after traces of someone who doesn't tend to look behind back. all too trusting, from what niamh concludes, and that hypothesis confirms itself once they begin sharing drinks.
the stranger who's name he learns to be zane takes his seat all by himself, and niamh nearly laughs at how easy it all feels. he does it so naturally, because tonight he is alone, and tonight the stool next to niamh is free. niamh is open - easy going, even. he is a scholar from lyriel who is here for research and he finds himself drinking zane's words the second they fly past his lips. he can, at last, put a face to the obsessive hobby that has been taking up all of his time for the past few weeks. all the things he's heard, all the descriptions finally have a name. they have brown curly hair and a boyish gaze that definitely is the key to zane getting whatever he wants, niamh guesses.
he even sees a sliver of a chain dangling by zane's neck as they walk back to his place and niamh swears he almost throws up.
the reaction it triggers is so mentally violent it plagues him the whole way to zane's room, the other's words slurred and blurry in his mind. it feeds him - this rage, this adrenaline - to gather up the courage needed to ask. to finally ask about what he's seeking for.
"so." he says, voice soft like he is still trying to sell himself. to prove to zane that he is sane - totally normal. but zane is already unbuttoning his shirt and niamh realizes that maybe, just maybe, it's in the bag. it's a shame, he thinks. he definitely would have went for it if the man wasn't hiding the antidote to niamh's curse somewhere in this room. "you know, this place has been raving about some gem you have. . someone even mentioned it to me while you were in the bathroom earlier. i'd love to see it, if you have it."
