I’m so curious with W&I to know what would have happened to Marwood after he left?

In a way he’s the more mysterious character as he’s so in denial.

The way I like to write/imagine him is achieving the initial success people get with a mainstream lifestyle, but gradually deteriorating as he loses his authenticity. Trying to live up to an abstract ideal would probably make him increasingly brittle and fearful, and it’s also not conducive to real relationships. Marwood as a character is very fear-driven. It’s the kind of thing that progressively backs people into a corner until they realise that they’re trapped. Which is what I imagine happening to him.

I kinda imagine him as trying to marry in the conventional hetero mould but failing it, and his career going downhill as he tries to take too many ‘safe’ roles. And the impact of living a fake life gradually eroding him and probably pushing him to some sort of crisis point where he would have to confront the things he tried to run away from, such as his sexual and emotional identity and his values.

It’s interesting too that he really isn’t that functional, he’s an alcoholic just as Withnail is although the latter is a more extreme example. He looks normal by comparison to Withnail but how normal does he look taken in isolation? How well would he blend in?

I think in the acting industry he’d read as more benevolent and vanilla than he actually is, and have trouble living up to that persona.

The good thing about his connection to Withnail was that he was seen and accepted as he actually is, partly as Withnail doesn’t give a damn about anything, but also because his moral compass is pretty unconventional (he does have one, I think, but totally out of the ‘normal’ frame of reference. And there is something oddly liberating about that.

I also think he uses Withnail as an excuse for his dysfunction, and solo he wouldn’t have anyone else to blame any more.

The ending of the film presents a sort of false optimism for Marwood, just as I think Withnail has a weird resillience which might not make his ending as bleak as it appears (much in the way a cockroach is pretty resilient lol)

Hi, this is the creators of withnail and i. Unfortunately due to specific complications, we have had to put withnail down yesterday. He died painlessly, and was buried in the garden as compost.
