I think I mentioned this in the tags of one of my posts before but just to reiterate:
I am a leafs fan, but this is and has always been a mitch marner archive account, and that will continue to be the case even now that he's not on the leafs anymore
I'll be going back and editing my #non leafs tag to #non team for cohesiveness and easy searching but that's currently a work in progress

"mitch marner seemed to handle it pretty well [balancing torts wanting the team to be aggressive but not careless] with five points. what kind of a day was it for mitch marner?"
"yeah, and for me, to- up close for a couple games- I've watched this guy play for so many years in this league. up close and personal with him now, he's a hell of a player. he does so many good things away from the puck. I think that helps him offensively, have the puck more, how patient he is with the puck. it was fun to watch. we were- when they pulled the goalie, sometimes I don't know who scored all the goals, and someone reminded me that mitchy has two, and I'm glad it worked out that he ends up scoring the third. they get really excited about that third one, so it was fun to see."

"no, he's been great. I think he scored in different ways, too, right? he had one where he tipped it. you know, the second one, he's in and around the net as well, kind of gets loose. and then the third one is probably one that you expect from mitch, right? where he makes a defender miss, gets everybody [laughs] kind of laying around on the ice, the goalie's swimming, and puts in a pretty sweet wraparound goal. but I think that's what's impressive about mitch, is you see the glitz and the glamour about him, but I don't think a lot of people appreciate the subtleties to his game, the little things that he does, and that's kind of what was evident in his other two."
"and just to follow up on that, I mean, even in the midst of some chances, I mean, he's using the goaltender as a teammate, passing it back, diving. He's making plays just to preserve possession, not give the opposing team a chance to get control."
"yeah, I mean, he's smart, right? I think that's why, he's been a student of the game since he was probably three years old. he's probably watched a ton of hockey in his day, sees little things that a lot of guys don't see, been through a lot of experiences that not many guys have been through, played a lot of high level hockey. so I think that's kind of where he finds those things. it's just his brain is usually a step above most guys."

"whatever it needs to be. I think I'm pretty comfortable playing all three positions. I've done all three this year so, yeah, whatever kind of he feels best with throwing me out there on, I'm always good with it, so. you know, when that's going on, just trying to be smart with my shift-"

"[laughs] yeah, dowder gave me some good tips on some faceoffs, which got me some big wins. but, yeah, I mean, just, you know, I'm comfortable in all three positions, really, and just trying to get better at center. obviously, it's been a long time since I've played it, but I've been playing it a lot recently, so. just trying to get better in the dot, trying to get better down low and just helping our d men out. but, yeah, I'm comfortable in all three."
"can you share any of the insight that dowd gave you about the faceoffs?"
"well, I mean, we're pretty lucky to have some pretty elite centermen in here that can snap some faceoffs back. you know, usually I like to talk to dowder or siz [colton sissons] or- herts [tomas hertl] is a little tough because he's a lefty, but I like talking to those two, especially about faceoff plans and how to kind of go against certain people. just try to always ask some questions and try to learn new ways to win some faceoffs."

"mitch is a great hockey player. it's been fun for me. it's two games that I've been up close and personal with him as his coach right now. I've watched him for so many years. yeah, he's a complete player, very important guy, one of the top players in the league. he does a lot of things for us."

"I can start with mitch. and it is amazing, I think, what we've been able to do with him, because when we lost [william] karlsson, we got thin at center and we decided to try mitch at center. he hasn't- I don't even know if he played it in junior [he has]. most real good hockey players have played centers as young guys, but he never played center in toronto, I don't think he did in london [he did]. so we tried him at center, and he's been fantastic, and we want to keep him there because he's actually starting to become good on faceoffs. but he is a terrific two way player. and it isn't very often when you can convert a winger to a center. that rarely happens in this league. and he's a number two center in the nhl right now. he's been productive for us, but I love the two way game that this player has. he's so clever and so intelligent defensively, stripping pucks, getting in the way of things. he is- and he's played- he's probably been our most consistent player."
as my (belated lol) goodbye tribute to butch I wanted to post this quote from the day before mitch's first game back in toronto. things have come out after the firing about the relationship between him and the players which I won't speculate about but if nothing else, he was completely confident and knew that the players would show up for mitch that game, and they absolutely did.

"[mitch has] got some people he can talk to about it [players leaving longtime teams] ... I don't know if they're all comparable, but they are good players that left that have to go back to the city they left for the first time, and there'd be a little bit of, I don't know if anxiety is the right word, but you're always wondering how it'll work out ... we've had guys sort of go through it. they're going to be pulling for mitch and I'm sure they're going to be ready to go tomorrow and they're going to want to win one for him."
