Harry felt a lump form in his throat. He could still hear those words so clearly, even after four decades.

He loved Scott. Of course he did. Loving Scott had always been easy. He had given Harry three incredible children and the life he’d always dreamed of. But something had always been missing.

For years and years, Harry tried to tell himself that this was it. That it was enough. Everything he ever wanted. That the before didn’t matter anymore. But the truth was, no matter where he was or what he accomplished, part of him always wondered what it would’ve been like if he’d done it all with him. Louis.

The breakup is surprisingly practical.

Harry keeps the townhouse.

Louis moves into a flat that doesn't allow dogs

So Harry also keeps Maple, which means Louis keeps showing up to walk her.

Maple keeps both of them, together.

Three walks a day were supposed to be for the dog. The walks become cups of tea, shared dinners and quiet evenings. Somewhere between routines and ordinary days, two people who thought they had fallen out of love begin finding their way back. Neither Harry nor Louis realises they're quietly rebuilding a life together until it already feels like home.

When Zayn and Liam adopt Cody, an older rescue dog whose previous owner has passed away, they expect to spend his golden years giving him a comfortable home.

What they don't expect is to inherit pieces of another life. An old letter, a favourite bakery and a bench overlooking the river. Familiar routines that Cody refuses to forget. As they follow in the pawprints of the man who loved him first, Zayn and Liam slowly come to know Arthur through the ordinary moments he shared with his best friend.

Told across two intertwining timelines, a story about grief, second chances, and the remarkable way dogs carry love from one family to the next. Because a dog's heart is never divided, it simply grows large enough to hold everyone who has ever called it home.

Appy has spent almost a decade running agility courses with Harry by her side. Every jump, every tunnel, every clean round has been another conversation between dog and handler. Another reminder that they're both at their happiest when they're running together.

But every athlete reaches the finish line eventually.

As Appy settles into retirement, Harry struggles to let go of the life they've shared, while Louis wonders if suggesting getting another dog would help heal the emptiness or only deepen it. When an energetic young rescue Bearded Collie unexpectedly enters their lives, all three of them must learn that welcoming a new beginning doesn't mean leaving the past behind.

A bittersweet story about growing older, learning to let go, and discovering that love is never replaced.
