Day 12 of catching up on Costumes

Time to relax and pick your favorite dinosaur, it's time for Chill Mama Dodo!

What makes this costume extra special is that every prehistoric creature you see on the blanket, was requested by the community. Sometimes it's a personal favorite, sometimes it's just a funny little guy. Very one of them special and 300 Channel points a pop.

I knew there was only limited space, so I designed the blanket so that it's an Annual thing where it resets every year and then make a physical version of it as merch. Though I will say, this blanket ended up being used for 2 years, so we'll just pretend it's the first year anniversary regardless.

Though this costume was made near the beginning, it wasn't until this point in the timeline before we completely filled out this version of the blanket so I didn't want to mention it until now.

One funny anecdote I will share about this costume is that we almost added the Dinosauroid to the blanket.

So, let me explain.

There was a period of multiple weeks where we were looking into the Paleontology conspiracy theory iceberg, where we learned about the Dinosauroids, a hypothetical evolution of Troodon-like creatures if the cretaceous extinction had not occurred. People in the community requested to add these to the blanket, in which I then put a full stop to any "mythological" creatures to be added. This was to prevent us going into a rabbit hole where you would have something like Yutyrannus standing next to Spinosaurus driving UFO's.

Funny enough, this conversation recently occurred this past Sunday, discussing what should and should not be on the blanket. For now, the current rule is that the creature must be extinct, however if they are still alive there must be fossils of them in the past. The characters in 1dealist Lore are exempt from this rule, however, so Dodos are also allowed.

Reason for this rather peculiar set of rules is mostly due to the fact that what is and isn't allowed was based mostly on "feeling". A shark didn't feel right to add, but Megalodon did. Dodos felt right to add, but an extinct parakeet didn't.

So this is still very much a work in progress and I think you might find future iterations of the blanket might have slightly different rule sets. There was even talk about an April Fools blanket where we fill it to the brim with the crazy tin foil hat paleontology theory creatures.

Overall both the community and I are aligned in that this costume is special. Not only is a piece of them in it, but it represents the love all of us have for the creatures that came before us. I do plan on moving forward in making this merch that all of us can enjoy, and am looking forward with making the Lore video tying it all together as well.

Whelp, have another back to back work day so I can't make a combo like before. In the meantime, I challenge you to be able to name all of the prehistoric creatures on the blanket! (if not that at least see if your fav is on there and call that out).

Hey y'all,

A small break from going over the past to talk about an important lesson for the present. As a recovering perfectionist/workaholic, very solemnly have I had the experience of "going back to the drawing board", so this is still a very fresh feeling for me.

In this case, it involves the new costume I wanted to make for the game Mouse PI, which inspired me to make a rubber hose animated black and white version of Mama Dodo. Yet everything just felt...off. I tried a couple variations of animations and even though the main character and Mama Dodo is fairly 1-1, she also didn't seem quite right.

I usually ran into this issue a lot in the past. The chronic "this isn't what I pictured in my head" kind of mentality that had plagued most of my creative ventures and was the core reason why my downward spiral and relationship with art soured so badly. So much so that I HATED my art and even after 2 years of working on it semi-regularly with many people complimenting and supporting me, do I find it "Alright". One day I'm sure though that as I continue working on it, my relationship with it will continue to improve.

So instead of trying to push through even if I don't like the result of it, I think I'm going to take a moment, let it simmer a little more, then come back to it with different eyes. I think this is the first time I've ever dropped a costume with the full intention of coming back to it later and change it up and it feels strange to say the least.

Hopefully this won't spoil things too much for the future version of this costume, but I felt that sharing what isn't a "final version" and that the journey isn't always one path. I still won't share what I have planned for the special interaction with this costume and think y'all will enjoy it!

Don't worry we'll be getting back to our sharing of past costumes soon enough. In the meantime remember to show yourself kindness and as long as you keep moving forward in your own pace, you'll reach your goal. At least, that's what I'm banking on for my self lol

Day 11 of catching up on Costumes

Time to take what the doctor ordered, it's Eldritch Doctor Mama Dodo!

For those that know me, it's not surprising that a Lovecraftian Doctor sim would catch my eye, so I dove headfirst into Do No Harm. You play as a new doctor in town and help cure peoples "ailments" via the four Humors, which is represented in different colors.

For those that don't know, way back when people didn't know how people work, the four Humors were how they viewed what made up the body; Phlem, Blood, Black Bile, and Yellow Bile. How does injecting the right Humor "cure" the people? I don't know man, I just work here.

Overall, it's a great game, had a lot of fun with it, got the good ending and would recommend giving it a shot.

Which brings us to our Dr. Dodo here. I remembered the issues that I had with Manager Mama Dodo a while back, so I wanted to make sure this felt MORE. So by making it seem like horrors beyond imagination where hidden beneath the cute exterior of the outfit, with many of teeth and eyes, we came to this conclusion.

I think this costume actually turned out pretty well. I even wanted to make a short video with the audio where they are like "This is Snoopy goopy, he's chill. and this is erik-" introducing all the little small faces I made in the coat. The stethoscope is also a nice touch as it breaks the silhouette, which is something I should try to do more of honestly; identifiable but unique is what I'm thinking is a good goal to have.

If I would have one criticism, it would be that I just didn't go HARD enough, y'know? I think I'm holding myself back a bit with these costumes for the sake of recognizability, and instead I should really push the envelope to see how far I can take it before we switch to something that people just can't recognize of being part of the original. If they end up making a second game, I'll try to do just that.

Speaking of doctors, no second update today as I need to pick up a prescription then go to work later. See y'all on the next one!

Day 10 of catching up on Costumes (just one today since this one is a big one).

What's that at the end of your insect glaive? It's Monster Hunter Mama Dodo!

In case the name didn't give it away, this costume was made for the game Monster Hunter. "But 1dealist", I hear you say "There are like 87 different monster hunter games, which one was this one for?" This one was for Monster Hunter Wilds and, as someone who put in over 300 hours into World, I was really excited about this one!

For those that don't know, Monster Hunter is a game series where you hunt monsters that have disrupted the local ecosystem, use their parts to make cool armor and weapons, and use those new gear to hunt more difficult monsters. A combination of a deep combat system, strangely positive environmental outlook, cool giant monsters, and some even cooler fashion to chase after; it's a favorite for a reason!

I was especially excited for this one b/c this was one of the few games I really wanted to implement more of something lore heavy to the costume pool.

So...Lore Drop!

1dealist the Paleomancer is well...a Paleomancer, meaning he raises creatures from the dead that may be too expired for most necromancers to utilize. However, he was a crafter before he became one, meaning that he just can't help himself from "modifying" his summons to improve on their strengths or help remove their weakness. This goes from catapult Ankylosaurs to weaponized artificial limbs on an Achillobator (big raptor).

So when a game comes out that have monsters that look like a T-rex with a sword for a tail, I like to imagine all of the little summons like to watch to see if there is anything they can "request" as a modification. Almost like a shopping network but with more teeth.

So in addition to this costume there was a other things that were added. A little background that made it look like there were a bunch of eyes watching the screen, TTS that chat could utilize to make it seem like they were talking, as well as introducing a new summon to the public eye, King the T-rex (you can see the pictures of these below).

King himself is fairly modified, his teeth replaced with metal conductive ones to amplify his magic and also had requested a sword tail ever sense he saw Glavenus. To say that Wilds didn't disappoint would be an understatement and 1dealist may be trying to figure our how to retrofit a Railgun on a Quetzalcoatlus as we speak.

So discussing the idea around the costume and the experience is cool and all, but what about the costume itself. Well funny enough, it's just kinda...meh. I didn't really enjoy this costume. The fact that you couldn't tell WHICH Monster Hunter game it is from just looking at it is also a failure of clarity. The core idea was that Mama Dodo made a nest at the end of a players weapon and they are trying to get her off. I think there is a way to make this work but the execution of it is a complete failure.

Don't get me wrong. Every costume is beautiful in it's own right and there is always someone who can find something from each art piece regardless of quality. However, when talking about these costumes I need to be able to look at these objectively, and objectively, this isn't a good costume.

That doesn't mean the whole event was a failure however. Most of my attention wasn't on the costume, but creating the experience and impact on the community that I was trying to express. A new character that people can fall in love with, an interesting background of behind the scenes of a world I'm trying to create, and giving my community a voice for the first time.

I think it's less to do with the costume itself and more to do with the costume is just part of the whole much more in this situation than before. Each piece by itself may not be up to ones own standard (especially for a workaholic like myself) but together it's something that is more than enough to feel proud of.

I always say this, but remember to be kind to yourself on your own journey. I mean, this is my longest post so far and yet one of my most disappointing costumes. That tells you how much thought and effort goes into something even if it just didn't quite turn out the way the creator wanted.

A lesson that I know I will carry on for every creation after and wish I had for every creation before.

Day 09 part 2 of catching up on Costumes.

It's not your resolution, its just a small little guy with a light! It's Oneshot Mama Dodo!

In case the name didn't give it away, this costume was made for the indie game Oneshot. It's an rpg with twists and turns as you play a self-aware character in a dark world, holding unto a light that could change everything. Fun game with emotional weight, I would definitely recommend this game a playthrough.

This costume was the first one I tried to do at a lower resolution to give it the feeling of being pixelated. I liked how it looks overall but in my opinion it just doesn't scale well when "blown up" to the usual size. There's another costume where we tried to do something similar to a much better success, but you'll see that in the near future :)

Overall, I'll give this one a solid A as it does it's job well but the way I went about it made it difficult to truly enjoy at the fullest. Plus, it's easily identifiable as if you were to see the main character, it's pretty spot on.

Day 09 part 1 of catching up on Costumes.

Touch at your own risk, it's Cursed Doll Mama Dodo!

This series of costumes I made with playing the Poppy's Playtime game series in celebration to the newly released chapter 4 (at the time). Since we hadn't played any of them yet, we spent a whole week going through them.

For those that don't know, Poppy Playtime is a horror game where you are trying to find out what happened in an abandoned toy factory, with giant toys not taking too kindly to you snoopin' around.

Overall I like that plot and the small moments here and there, but it's not one that's easy for me to recommend due to the bugs and other issues it had. If there would be anything I would recommend, is probably watching the lore videos or someone else's playthrough (or mine if you may be so inclined).

Doing this was probably one of my favorite interactions to date. So, I had a redeem that allowed people to "poke the doll" which would have a percentage chance for something to happen. 60%, nothing would happen, 30% the eye would move to look at you through the screen (see one of the attached pictures for that one), and finally 10% chance of a jumpscare. The jumpscare would have the huggy wuggy sound effect and the following picture flashing on the screen;

Overall it was a blast and the little hats made the doll feel really cute and different even if it was just a small change.

Goes to show that even if the game isn't what we planned for it to be, we can really make it our own in a unique way. So don't be afraid to push yourself if you decide to want to make an experience for others. You might be surprised how well it turns out.

Day 08 part 2 of catching up on Costumes.

If your car needs a tunup or you need to disarm an explosive, be sure to call Mechanic Mama Dodo!

The second most divisive costume I've ever made goes to a game called Uncle Chops Rocket Shop. An indie spaceship repair sim game full of charm and oddities. If you are looking for a neat little sim game with a good sense of humor, I would recommend giving this one a shot.

So why, you may be asking, is this one divisive? Well, compared to the other ones we've made so far, this costume can be a bit...jarring. Going from a cute little dodo to what is essentially a fully grown man with a sleeveless-T can put anyone on edge. So there is a pretty even split between people who found this hilarious and some who didn't want to look at it anymore.

As far as the inspiration, all you would need to look at is the main character you play in the game. Essentially it's the same look but a different colored shirt, different tats, and a fox head instead of a Dodo.

In addition to the new costume I added a speech bubble to the stream that looked exactly like the one in the game, making it seem like we were talking inside of it. I think it turned out pretty well if I don't say so myself!

It's difficult to say I would do it differently if I were to make it again. It's taken directly from the game itself and the theme is spot on. I think I would instead try to do more of putting my own spin on it besides "I totally didn't copy their homework, I put my name on it" style of inspiration.

Maybe have her leaning into a car pulling out random objects or change the head to different paleo creatures. I don't know I'm just spit balling here, let's see y'all do better in the responses! (Just kidding I'm just farming for engagement).

Overall, I like this one. It's weird and not for everyone but I think that's the point. People need to understand (me included) that what you make isn't for everyone. However, for the special few, it will feel special to them.

Day 08 part 1 of catching up on Costumes.

Time to put your deck together, it's time for Card Mama Dodo!

This costume was made for the game Inscryption, an indie card game/escape room with more twists and turns than a *insert southern colloquialism here*. Highly recommend it and the systems throughout the game are deep, interesting, and fun!

Funny enough this costume was one of the easiest I've made and is also one of the more popular (I'm starting to see a trend here). There is an Inscryption maker online that I just imported a simple black and white mama dodo similar to the Ink Mama Dodo. Then I made her abilities be somewhat cannon as best as I could, and wallah!

Overall, it really showed me the joy of making costumes that feel like they are in the game we are playing; like this is a card that would easily fit in my hand (which I played with when making thumbnails for the video).

So go give the game a try and remember to keep on trying new things. You would be surprised what catches your eye.

Day 07 part 2 of catching up on Costumes.

Time to check under the tree it's Christmas Mama Dodo!

I try to make myself available for big holidays when I can. I know for some, it's difficult to meet with family and friends and providing a nice space for people to go to during that time gives me a sense of making even a little bit of a difference in peoples lives.

So what I tend to do during the Christmas time is pull up one of my favorite games of all time Satisfactory, as they have a Christmas update every year. So even though this game is "technically" for Satisfactory, it's more for just celebrating the Christmas holiday as a whole.

That being said, this also feels like a costume that is minimally changed from the original. We have mistletoe on the ceiling (something that honestly doesn't look half bad), Santa hat, and lights wrapped around her core.

It's hard to describe why I dislike this costume besides it just doesn't feel "enough". Sure you can tell it's Christmas but it just doesn't add anything more, at least in my eyes. Maybe y'all disagree but I hope to make a 2.0 version of this which will allow me to really make it feel like a true "Christmas Costume", you know?

If there is anything to be taken from this costume is to spend time with people that you love while you can, and express your love to those that matter to you.

For me, I've always been one who loves making things for people. Something about the creative process and making sure that every bit of it is something that I do, makes it feel special and just heals my soul in ways that is difficult to describe.

Day 07 part 1 of catching up on Costumes.

Time to stay hidden b/c it's time for Camouflage Mama Dodo!

Well it might not be very clear, but this costume was made for the horror game Unknown Tapes. A Dino horror game where you try to sneak around while dinosaurs try to find and eat you. It was difficult but I had fun playing it. Plus any game that combines my 2 favorite things (dinosaurs and horror) gets some brownie points.

This costume I'm pretty disappointed in. I was trying to go for a ghillie suit kinda vibe but instead it looks like Mama Dodo just came out of a pot of boiled spinach. I think if execution was done better it could have turned out okay, but I think the idea behind it is also flawed.

If instead I went the direction of her pretending to be a bush, or even having like a Halloween costume of a raptor that's poorly made, would have been a better/funnier way of approaching the same conclusion in a more creative way.

Definitely a costume that is a learning experience that has and will continue to improve costumes from now on.

Day 06 of catching up on Costumes.

Time to get bouncy with our first animated costume, Slime Mama Dodo!

Oh yeah, this one is a fan favorite, me included! I wanted to make sure this one felt bouncy for our gameplay of Slime Rancher. It's a charming adventure game where you collect Plorts (poop) of slimes for money. You can combine them together and create a cute little ranch. Overall, highly recommend, especially if you like cute little guys.

This was my first attempt at an animated..well anything really. I tried to stick to the core values of animation as best as I could and I think it turned out really well. I like how the bones move a little and the core is still very much part of even her more simple design.

I think the best part is that even though its a squishy ball, you can still tell it's Mama Dodo. Meaning that most of her personality is in her beak, probably.

I felt so inspired by this costume I even made my very own Slimepedia article about her and was going to draw what each combination with the Dodo slime would look like. But I got overwhelmed/distracted and never finished it.

I think overall the effect on me personally for this costume was greater than the other previous ones, which I think it goes to show how sometimes your creative work can surprise you in ways you don't expect.

Day 05 of catching up on Costumes

Time to freshen your breath with Mouthwash Mama Dodo!

Writing this out between sleep and work so no multiple parts today, but be sure to clean your mouth with DoGo Away!

Jokes aside the game that I made this for is Mouthwashing. A horror game that has a lot less about mouthwash than you would think. It tackles some pretty difficult topics so it's not for the feint of heart. However, I do believe it's worth experiencing for yourself if you can stomach it.

Because I make these costumes before I play the game, sometimes I don't have a clue what I'm getting myself into. So I decided to lean into the title and just make a Mama Dodo themes mouthwash, after all, if there is no flesh then it won't stink!

I think it was my first silly costume (which is amusing considering the type of game it was made for) but I think it turned out really well. Including the interaction I made for this stream, in which if someone was in chat for 30 min, the bot would say that their breath would stink, and they would need to "use mouthwash" to clean it. They would then use another redeem to clean the mouths to reset the timer.

It wasn't anything fancy but people enjoyed interacting with it...especially when spamming it over and over again to make sure it's extra clean. I very much learned the need to include anti-spam measures that's for sure...

Day 04 - Part 6 of catching up on Costumes

Better make sure there are no holes in your suit, its time for Biohazard Mama Dodo!

Last costume of the 1st 24-hour Halloween event so you'll see me finally stop mentioning it, this costume was made for the game The Classrooms, a procedural, limiinal-space, survival horror game.

If you've heard of the Backrooms and enjoy the idea of it, you'll enjoy this game as much as I did. In fact, the reason I chose the Biohazard suite idea was to mimic the look of the same suits people wore in the backrooms.

Let's start with he positives. I like how the sticky notes look like they are peeling off like they weren't put on all the way and I couldn't help the Amogus reference considering the look of it.

That being said, I believe this is the worst costume I have made so far. The complete cut off of the beak gives it a feeling of incompleteness and there is just SO MUCH YELLOW.

I did end up going in a completely different direction next time I played it and glad I did. I think the issue is that it just looks lazy. Knowing that I made all the 24-halloween event costumes the day of, I think I phoned it in and you can tell. Not intentionally of course and perhaps I'll give the hazmat suit another shot in the future.

There had to be one on the bottom and I am okay with this one being it. It's a lesson of what doesn't work and also a reminder that it's okay to be at your worst every once in a while. For every amazing costume, there have a to be a few that just don't work, and I plan on sharing both the good, the bad, AND the ugly with y'all. I am only human after all.

Day 04 - Part 5 of catching up on Costumes

Time to check up on your employees, it's time for Manager Mama Dodo!

This costume was made for the game Lobotomy Corporation, a roguelite monster-management sim game. If you like SCP, you'll like this game (I know I did). Basically you just make these entities happy in their own unique way without your employees dying one way or another.

Probably shouldn't have played it at 4am during the 1st 24-hour Halloween event, but I learned not to play mentally straining games during that time slot in the future.

Not every costume can be a hit and unfortunately this is one of them. I do like how the sleeve is too big for Mama Dodo, but overall it's just too simple. It's inspired by the outfit the main guide has in the game but there just isn't much else that adds to the experience besides a white coat.

I hope to pick this game back up as I had a lot of fun with it. When I do, I think I'm going to make a 2.0 version of this and make something closer to Eldritch Doctor Mama Dodo (Costume that we will get to on a later date).

Day 04 - Part 4 of catching up on Costumes

Probably one of my most "Creative" costumes to date, shake hands with Hand Mama Dodo.

A wild interpretation of a costume for the game Bunny Graveyard, where you play a hand and uncover the truth of what happened to the other "helping hands". Still looking forward to the sequel, so I recommend trying it out.

Of all the redeems that stayed around from the 1st 24-hour Halloween event, the one made for this one is the fan favorite by a mile. You see, I already had a "pet mama dodo" redeem, in which a hand pets Mama Dodo. It's cute you know? However I had a cursed thought.

If we're the hand this time, then what would be petting the hand? Mama Dodo of course! Thus created "Pet w/ Mama Dodo" redeem which has Mama Dodo rub against the hand and it still makes me laugh to this day.

Overall painting mama dodo as a hand instead of a Dodo this time was a fun way to explore and stretch what costumes are possible. Though it matches the aesthetic of 1dealist as a whole, one can't take a look at this and say, "Ah yes, Mama dodo as a hand". Maybe a beak?

I look forward for the next chapter to the game so I can give it another shot, maybe make a new "Pet the petting mama dodo w/ mama dodo" until we have an endless line of petting dodos. The skies the limit!

Day 04 - Part 3 of catching up on Costumes

Time to dive into the ink with Inky Mama Dodo.

Continuing our costumes made for the 1st 24-hour Halloween stream, this costume was made for the game Bendy and the Ink machine, a horror game where you explore an abandoned animation workshop and reveal it's dark history. It's charming, I recommend it.

There isn't too much to say about this costume compared to the other ones. This one I could probably say was the easiest to make by far, with just utilizing an outline tool and a paint bucket I was good to go!

I will say we also did a redeem to "Ink" the stream and make everything black and white, and one of the redeems that are still used today occasionally.

I love how simple it is and how much it blends in with the world I made it for. I think this was the first one I really felt like it belonged in the world that inspired it and something that I continue to strive for with future creations.

Day 04 - Part 2 of catching up on Costumes

Time to bring out the EMF reader, it's Ghost Hunter Mama Dodo.

This costume was made during my first 24-hour Halloween event (one I like to continue doing to this day), in which we played the game Phasmophobia. A horror game where you play as a ghost hunter that goes to haunted locations, find clues that lead to finding out what kind of ghost you are working with, then leaving with hopefully a time of fully alive people. Never really understood why they just leave the ghost....

Anyways, I liked the little details on this one. The black light on the head to keep her hands free, the EMF reader that stays green when not talking then red when we are, and the incense that are stuffed in her fluff.

Funny thing though, people saw many different things instead of incense, the most funny being mozzarella sticks which I loved so much I almost decided to make it canon.

Of course the most obvious addition is the ghost behind Mama Dodo, in which we named though I don't remember what it was (I wanna say Alejandro?). I like how it seems to be just as scared as Mama Dodo is and is always just right behind her.

Overall I think it was a bit too simple and some of the items could use a bit more clarity. I think this costume needs a new 2.0 version and it could really shine as my go to Ghost Hunting costume for future games.
