Help us move the *whole* Bay Area forward Ā š
When we immigrated to the US from the Philippines, my parents tirelessly worked to make ends meet, utilizing every possible resource in our community (from school to friends and colleagues). They made our family stronger and inspired me to help my community access critical resources. Now at over three years into this work, I'm humbled to work with community members who remind me of my parents, like Sofia, a working mother of two and a full-time student. Since starting to use One Degree, Sofia has been able to access a food stamp program for her family, after-school and tutoring programs for her kids and even a baseball team for her son. A huge difference from the frustrating times when she used to ride the bus to dozens of agencies to get just a bit of information on services. There are thousands of families like Sofiaās in the Bay Area and we want to empower them all, which is why we are excited to announce the One Degree 2016 Expansion Fund!
We want to help mothers and families beyond SF and Oakland, and you can help make it happen.
Donate today to help us build stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger Bay Area!
Our goal is to expand One Degree throughout all 9 counties of the Bay Area by the fall of 2016, immediately creating access for families just like Sofia's in communities like San Jose, Richmond, Vallejo, and East Palo Alto.
We've set an initial goal of $10K to kickstart the Expansion Fund. Your support means reaching more families in more counties, soĀ pitch in today!
With immense gratitude, Rey & The One Degree Team
We made affordable housing search less scary + more spooky news!Ā š»
As the fall season rolls in, we at One Degree are steadily building capacity within our organization and continuing to reach more and more families throughout the Bay Area.Ā
As you may remember, we launched One Home (our new affordable housing search tool) last month, and we have already seen over 3,200 people make over 14,000 searches! This led to nearly 600 applications downloaded. Additionally, caseworkers from Compass Family Services (our launch partner) have fully adopted One Home and already consider it an indispensable tool.

Welcome Alejandro Ayestaran, One Degreeās NewĀ Board Member!
Alejandro Ayestaran,Ā Board member
Alejandro has a passion for helping organizations scale and grow to fulfill their potential and vision. An engineer by training and general management executive by trade, for the past 10+ years he has held a number of operational, management and strategic roles at various technology and consumer-focused organizations.
Originally from Argentina, he moved to the Bay Area to pursue an MBA at Stanford University. He is currently the Head of Growth and Operations at Shift Technologies and was previously a Project Leader with the Boston Consulting Group.
The reasons that drove Ale to join One Degree:
āIt was a great fit.ā One Degreeās mission combined two lifelong passions of his: eradicating poverty and technology. Since moving to the United States, Ale has spent a lot of time getting to know different organizations with missions similar to One Degreeās. He described One Degree as āa refreshing and unique solutionā.
HisĀ visionĀ for One Degreeās future:
Ale believes One Degree will continue to create an innovative and much-needed solution to fight the poverty facing our communities. Over the next two years, he wants One Degree to solidify its game plan and be in a position to scale to the rest of the nation, and possibly even internationally.
On why poverty is such an important issue for him:
āPoverty is something that has to do with fairness.ā Ale recalled being a child in Patagonia, Argentina and being confused by a line of kids that would always arrive early to school. Some were his friends, which he thought surely could not be that excited about school. As he grew, he learned that those kids, including his friends, relied on the school for their meals. In many cases, the school provided their only nutrition for the day. They were just kids - they were his friends.Ā
Welcome Audrey, our new Resource Manager!
We finally have each of our departments covered -- the resource management department is the last gap weāre filling to create a more solid organization. One Degree Launches Affordable Housing Web Platform, One Home
One Degree and Compass Family Services Partner to Launch Affordable Housing Web Platform, One Home
San Francisco, CA (September 9, 2015) ā Affordable housing in the Bay Area is more accessible thanks to a partnership announced today between One Degree and Compass Family Services. One Degree is a nonprofit technology organization that creates modern tech-driven solutions to empower people to create a path out of poverty for themselves and for their communities.
One Home (www.onehomebayarea.org) is the first Bay Area-wide searchable, always up-to-date, and accessible affordable housing website. By using One Home on a computer, tablet, or smartphone, families can find homes they are eligible for, share housing information with others, and download applications.
āWeāre bringing the affordable housing space into the 21st century. Thousands of families are already accessing social services by using One Degree on their phones and computers, and now weāre doing the same thing for affordable housing,ā said Rey Faustino, CEO and Founder of One Degree. āWeāve made it simple for families to find affordable housing around the Bay Area. Obtaining housing is the first step on the path to overcome poverty.ā
Low-income families on average apply to 40 affordable housing properties at a time, according to data from Compass Family Services. This requires them to travel to far-flung offices to pick up paper applications, fill out dozens of documents, and navigate complicated eligibility requirements.
Staff at Compass Family Services, One Homeās launch partner, use the site in their work to help hundreds of clients find and apply to low-income housing throughout the Bay Area.
āWeāre very excited about One Home. Weāre literally going from piecemealing static housing lists every month to a search engine with an interactive map showing up-to-date availability of affordable housing in the areaā, said Erica Kisch, Executive Director of Compass Family Services. āFamilies, their case managers and agencies who specialize in locating and securing affordable housing for their clients can actually see whatās currently out there and fill out housing applications directly from One Home,ā she said.
āWeāre thrilled that Compass Family Services is joining us as our launch partner for One Home. Weāre looking forward to developing partnerships with other organizations and housing developers to make the affordable housing process better for everyone involved, and so ultimately families have a safe place to live, no matter what their circumstances,ā said Faustino.
One Degree plans to open up other partnership opportunities for housing organizations in order to ensure more low-income families throughout the Bay Area obtain safe and stable homes.
One Home is One Degreeās second product. Its sister website, www.1deg.org, offers comprehensive listings of thousands of nonprofit and social services in Alameda and San Francisco counties for health care, legal services, food, employment services, educational programs, and many more.
###
About One Degree:
One Degree is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization, whose mission is to empower people to create a path out of poverty for themselves and for their communities. We are focused on creating modern tech-driven solutions to problems that plague the safety net of community resources that help families in need. We make thousands of local, poverty-fighting nonprofits and social services accessible to families through www.1deg.org. As part of our mission, we are also working to ensure every family has a safe and stable home by making it easier to find affordable housing through our new website, OneHomeBayArea.org.

Introducing One Home
It comes as no surprise to anyone that finding affordable housing in the Bay Area is really, really hard. Even middle income-earners are discovering that their options are limited and the process time-consuming and complex. For the most vulnerable individuals and under-resourced families among us, itās even more difficult and demoralizing.
We spend a lot of time at One Degree working to connect families with a variety of resources, but, without a doubt, helping secure a safe and stable home is the most fundamental and profound thing we can do to help our members in the long term. Itās core to our mission of helping families overcome poverty, but until recently we didnāt know where to start.
Since we launched One Degree last year, weāve been told by our members and partner agencies that they wanted to see us provide more housing resources.Ā In particular, we were told that the definitive source of up-to-date housing information are the PDF lists compiled by Compass Family Services, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that works with homeless families.
According to Compass, low-income families on average apply to 40 affordable housing properties at a time, and the process often requires them to travel to far-flung offices to pick up paper applications, fill out dozens of documents, and navigate complicated eligibility requirements.
In 2015, this kind of overwrought, byzantine process puts low-income families at a distinct disadvantage and is symbolic of the ācycle of poverty.ā Those who are struggling often donāt even know where to look for something affordable, and without stable housing, canāt improve their economic situation.
This is exactly the kind of self-perpetuating inequity that is the focus of our organization. We knew we had to do something.
Thatās why One Degree partnered with Compass Family Services to launch a brand new website: One Home.
Itās modern, friendly, and, most importantly, makes it easy to find and apply for housing. Itās also dead-simple to share and keep track of the dozens of applications families have to complete. Itās free, and available to anyone on a computer or smartphone, in English and Spanish.
This is our first product partnership with another organization, and we couldnāt be more excited to be working with such dedicated and expert professionals. The team at Compass has been working for over 100 years to help clients on a 1-on-1 basis, and they do incredible work getting homeless families back on track.
While One Degree is a start-up, we bring to the table our own expertise in technology and product development and, of course, a shared commitment to helping at-risk and low-income families. With our combined knowledge and talents, we hope to scale the work that both our organizations do to reach many thousands more in the region who need to find a home.
Check out OneHomeBayArea.org and let us know what you think. We would love your feedback directly; email me at eric [at] 1deg.org.
We know that a sleek new website isnāt going to solve the housing crisis in the Bay Area. But making it easier to find a place to call home is a good start.
Youāre invited to an exclusive launch event!Ā š
We can't believe the summer is nearly over. Natalia, our new head of community growth and marketing, along with our summer interns and staff, have conducted 15 community outreach events from the Bayview District in SF to Fruitvale in Oakland. We've met with hundreds of moms, dads, and kids who are excited about making the most of the new school year, so we created these lists to help them find back-to-school resources:Ā after-school programs and tutoring,Ā college prep programs,Ā early education optionsĀ &Ā school suppliesĀ and clothing.
THANKS TO TIPPING POINT & SUPERBOWL 50
We're thrilled to announce that Tipping Point has graciously renewed their funding for One Degree. Not only does Tipping Point provide the fuel to keep our work going, they also have been providing valuable guidance throughout the year. We can't thank them enough!
We also want to thank our newest supporter, the Superbowl 50 Fund. You've probably heard that next year's Superbowl will be in the Bay Area, and it's gearing up to be the most philanthropic Superbowl ever. In addition to giving us a grant, they also created a video showcasing our very own Orlando Pineda Garcia, One Degree's hardworking engineer. Check out the video!

We are very excited to have them join the One Degree team this summer!
Navigating Our Neighborhood with the Help of Twitter NeighborNest
Two weeks ago we held an exciting workshop called Navigate Your Neighborhood where both community members and non-profit practitioners were trained on using the One Degree platform to access community resources. Twitter kindly hosted us in their NeighborNest, a newly opened space where they provide technology training for the community (particularly for those in the Tenderloin where Twitter HQ is). The NeighborNest allowed everyone to have access to their own computer and spend the full time of the workshop learning about how to access resources.
Questions were asked, resources were found, and everyone was having a great time learning more about finding opportunities in their neighborhood. After basic instructions, members were quickly navigating through the various resources. We received lots of positive feedback from all who attended, many commenting on the ease of using One Degree.Ā
āOne Degree seems like the preeminent site for help and connecting people in need.āĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ~One Degree Member
We had 90% of people say that they would be interested in attending a similar workshop in the future, and over 93% say that after going through the workshop, they are highly likely to recommend One Degree to a friend or a colleague. Overall, attendees scored the workshop an average 9.1 out of 10, a number that we would call a success. Although the real success of the workshop was being able to meet more of our members in person, and learning to navigate our neighborhoods as one community.
Be on the lookout for future One Degree events across the Bay Area!

Community-centered Design
Hi everyone. My nameās Eric Johnson, and Iām the new User Experience Designer at One Degree. My job is to research our community membersā needs and design our site so itās solving their problems in an intuitive way. I started just over 2 months ago and Iām excited to share with you what Iāve been working on.
My first project upon joining was to get to know our community and find out how people are using One Degree. To inform my process, I used the very helpful User Research Guide by Michael Margolis of Google Ventures and The Field Guide to Human-Centered Design from IDEO. The main takeaway: You canāt make ANY assumptions about your users or how they might use your product.
Michael Margolisā āUser Research Guideā and IDEOās āField Guide to Human-Centered Designā
With this in mind, I drafted a plan: Meet One Degree members and prospective members out in the field, learn about their background, how they access community resources and use technology now, and observe them as they complete a few key tasks on our site.
I set out to find a diverse group of people with a broad range of perspectives. I talked to people sitting in the food court of a mall, relaxing in a park, at a transitional housing shelter, and over a hot cup of coffee at a local cafe. I was surprised and grateful for how willing people were to talk and help out.
After hearing each personās story, I asked them to complete different tasks on One Degree. Iād say āIf you were looking for affordable housing, how would you use this website to do that?ā and sit back and passively observe. I asked them to think out loud as they navigated the site and watched for āpain-pointsā. Pain-points are moments when you might get lost, confused, frustrated, or is unable to complete a given task.
With the help of our members we were able to identify over 20 pain-points in our product and set out to fix them immediately. I drafted new designs for each part of the product we identified as needing improvement, presented them to our team, and in a couple of weeks our engineers had already released a new version of the site. It showed how much empathy they have for our community and how they obviously believe in the power of user-centered design.
One Degree CTO Eric Lukoff and engineer Orlando Pineda hard at work implementing the changes
Most of the improvements you may not even notice (good design is 99% invisible, you know), but one example of a change we made was on our opportunity page. When participants found the resource they wanted to use, some were still not sure what to do next, despite our signature āWhat to do nextā box. It turns out that box was getting lost amid the contact information and location of the service provider. In our new design, weāve highlighted and called out this section so itās crystal clear what you need to do to access the opportunity.
New design of our opportunity page with highlighted āWhat to do nextā section
After fixing the pain-points we uncovered, I began more exploratory conversations with community members and nonprofit professionals. We identified several ways our tools can better enable families to find what they need, and help professionals do their jobs better. Iām thrilled to say weāve begun working on a whole new version of our site with a modern interface to the navigate the complex world of case management, community resources, and client referrals. Stay tuned for more updates coming soon!
In the meantime, check out the new and improved version of One Degree with the 20+ updates we recently made.
Hot off the Press! + We're hiring!
A few months ago the San Francisco Chronicle nominated me for their first-everVisionary of the Year Award, alongside some amazing business and community leaders in the Bay.
Today Iām humbled again as a full profile of the work weāre doing at One Degree and how it all started was published in the San Francisco Chronicle and on SFGate.com.
Although the article emphasizes how One Degree can help recent immigrants, as you know our website is for anyone who needs help -- from a low-income single mother (of any national origin!) to a social worker working on behalf of his clients, and everyone in-between.
Check out the article (and video!) here, and share it with your friends.
WE'RE HIRING!
Iām also excited to let you know that One Degree is hiring again! We have two new positions open:
Community Growth & Marketing ManagerĀ
Content Manager
We were able to bring on our previous teammates because of you. Could you help again by telling your friends and colleagues about our open positions?

More tools for pros - beyond the binder
Ah, the paper resource binder! So familiar. So simple. Itās easy to use and you can pass it around your office. Who needs computers when youāve got your trusty resource binder?
But then again, itās heavy. New staff have a hard time understanding the the way itās āorganized.ā Oh and thereās only that one copy. Those little sticky notes or handwritten scrawls are helpful, but so easily lost or smudged. And since itās, well, a paper binder, thereās no way to look up information out of the office, on your phone, or on your computer. Thereās also no easy way to share information stored on those faded, ripped, Xeroxed pages. And of course the whole thing is almost always years out of date, because itās just...paper!
Itās 2015. We can do better. And I donāt have to tell you that we need to do better for the families weāre serving.
Today weāre introducing some new ways for you to use One Degree as a ābinder replacementā for your organization.
1. Manage your organizationās profile Visit your organization page and connect your individual One Degree account with your organizationās profile. (Be sure to log in and check āShow me tools for nonprofit or social work professionalsā in your account settings.) Once youāre connected, you can manage your organizationās information, create shared resources, and invite your coworkers to join you.
2. Share lists with coworkers Youāve already been able to create a list of community resources and share it with those you decide. But now you can also share your lists with everyone at your organization (after you connect your account with it), so your coworkers can use the the same shared resource lists. And if you and your colleagues have lists you want to share with the wider world, you can display those lists right on your organizationās profile page.
Check out the Suitcase Clinicās page for an example of how they are using One Degree lists to organize their most-used resources and share them with the community.
3. Add notes to opportunities Just like a regular binder, sometimes itās helpful to add a little note or scribble to your list -- tips, tricks, or other useful information about how to access resources. And now you can do just that on One Degree pages. Make these notes private, so only you can see them, or share them with your coworkers. You can also make notes public so the community can learn from your experience.
So get started! Once youāve connected your One Degree account with your organization, you can invite coworkers to join you in managing your lists, notes, and community resource information. We canāt wait to see what you share.
As always, email me eric [at] 1deg.org if you have any feedback, questions, or suggestions! More to come...
Meet One Degree's newest team members: Orlando, engineer, and Eric, user experience designer
We're beyond thrilled to introduce you to the two new members of our team: Orlando Pineda, engineer, and Eric Johnson, user experience designer!
Orlando and Eric Johnson round out our product development team, and will join Eric Lukoff in building out website and future offerings. With their support, we'll have the capacity to more quickly improve our existing products, build exciting new features, and take our organization to the next level in achieving our mission of truly empowering families to access poverty-fighting resources.
Orlando Pineda is a Bay Area native from East Palo Alto, CA. A graduate of Columbia University's computer science department, he previously worked at education tech startup Root-1 and held other engineering internships. He's excited to use his coding skills to help people in need fight poverty. Ā
Eric Johnson, born in Oakland, CA, and raised in Portland, OR, is eager to use his creativity and design skills to create a more cohesive experience for One Degree's users. Eric got bitten by the startup bug after he graduated from Santa Clara University. Most recently he was the lead designer at Fidelis, an edtech startup.
We're fired up about having them both on the team because they're hard workers, fast learners, and generally fun guys!
Welcome Orlando and Eric to the team by writing a note here:
bit.ly/welcome-orlando-eric
As you can see, we're making deliberate steps to grow our team so that we can provide a better product and experience for our members and our community. Thanks for joining us and helping spread the word about our hires!
