Chapter 1: Mel
Disclaimer: The Starkillers Cycle contains strong language and graphic content. It is not intended for readers under age 18.
–
Blood was a lot stickier than Mel remembered.
And shivs were a lot messier.
With one knee digging into Kress’s emaciated gut, Mel used the shiv’s toothbrush handle to prod the bloody hole in his neck. Afternoon heat coiled off the prison’s black asphalt, and the jungle humidity sank into her gray prison coveralls.
Blinking away sweat, Mel leaned in close to Kress. The prison ID numbers stamped along his uniform collar were fading beneath an endless stream of blood. The shiv’s blade had gotten wedged below his Adam’s apple. Now she needed to get it back out.
Otherwise, this asshole was going to die.
But it wasn’t the blood loss that would kill him. It was the poison she was pretty positive he’d laced along the razor’s edge.
“Was it Plutax?” she asked, poking again at the slice in his neck. More blood oozed, dribbling as halfheartedly as her attempts to find the razor. “Or was it just good old fashioned arsenic?”
Kress groaned; his sunburned eyelids fluttered open. “Bitch,” he gurgled out.
“Never heard of that one.” She pushed off Kress, flinging aside the toothbrush and sinking into a crouch. He’d always been a small guy, but he looked really small prostrate and bleeding like this. “If you don’t give me a real answer, Kress, then I can’t get you an antidote. The guards will show up any second now, and they’re gonna have a lot of questions.”
“They can’t help … anyway,” he rasped. “It’s … Vips,”
Vips—slang for Viprizec, a popular poison for all one’s execution needs. No antidote, a lot of pain, death in minutes … and Kress had just tried to use it on Mel.
Well, fuck trying to save his life.
It felt like only seconds ago that she’d scarfed back her lunch and slunk out here. She did it everyday—and all the inmates knew to stay the fuck away so she could have her five minutes of peace and quiet. Even the guards let her wander out alone since they could see her on their ten million security cams, anyway.
But Kress had brilliantly decided to hide in the shadow of the women’s bathroom twenty paces away and slice her up from behind—or try to slice her up. It was a really dumb move, even for Kress.
Eyes narrowing, Mel shifted her face toward the nearest camera at the top of the bathroom’s brick wall. The lens was angled in the opposite direction.
Her gaze snapped further on, to the nearest of eight metal towers that stood sentry along the compound’s edges. Scaffolding webbed around each tower—reinforcement added after the earthquake six years back—and every inch of steel was covered in roving cams. And yet not a single building, beam, doorways had cams facing her either.
Maybe not quite as dumb a move as she’d thought. It would seem Kress had found a blind spot—which meant that no one would see she’d fought in self-defense. The guards would just assume it was cold-blooded murder.
After all, that was what had landed her in prison two years back.
Mel’s head whipped back to Kress. “How the fuck did you know this was blind?” With eight gleaming high-rises and hundreds of buildings between, the cameras picked up everything the prisoners did on the compound—from pissing to showering to fighting. “No way this was just luck.”
He laughed—or tried to. The blood bubbling between his teeth made it hard.
“Who set you up for this?” she demanded.
“You really have … no idea … do you?” He coughed; blood sprayed onto her chin, mixing with her sweat.
She bit back a frown. Blood on her hands was one thing—she’d killed enough people to stop caring if it got under her fingernails. But blood on her face …
She dragged a sleeve over her chin. “I’ve only got a few minutes before the guards notice this, and you’ve got even less time than that. I know P.G.E. is the reason I’m in prison, and I know you just tried to kill me. What I don’t know is why.”
“Fuck … you.” His lips twitched up, and even as his eyes rolled back in head, his wicked satisfaction was clear. “I was on death row anyway, but you just … hit … ten. Have fun on Rix … ” The end of the name vanished beneath a choked gurgle.
Kress was dead.
“Well, shit.” Mel pushed into a standing position, dragging her bloodied hands down her coveralls.
Have fun on Rixion—that’s what he’d been about to say. It was the highest security prison planet in the entire Federation of the Cavillis Axis, and a guaranteed death sentence. Not from the convicts sentenced there, but from the hard labor—mining, forging, and shipping steel. Compared to Rixion, the prison-planet of Hatha was a five-star hotel.
Mel’s teeth clenched together, gritting in her ears. Ten strikes guaranteed her a one-way ticket to Rixion. And to think, she’d only been at eight strikes before lunch. Now, two stale sandwiches and a bloody round of self-defense later, she was one strike over the finish line.
She threw another glance at the mess hall … then in the other direction. The security fence loomed a hundred yards away. It was an easy scramble—only fifteen feet of chain-link. Tall ferns towered beyond, unmoving in the thick, humid afternoon. Even the usual screech of insects seemed dulled. A quarter mile further, past a dense sprawl of scrub and secondary growth, the jungle’s tree line began, fat gray trunks blending into a wall of greenery.
“Shit,” Mel repeated, louder this time. When she’d woken up this morning and knocked back her UV-tabs before working the cattle fields, she had not imagined striking out into that Hathan jungle beyond the fence … and then getting her name struck off the Warden’s list of prisoners.
Strikers, everyone called them—the prisoners stupid enough to choose Hatha’s jungle over its prison, to choose scarce game over tasteless gruel, to face the so-called monsters that occasionally got through the fifty-foot concrete wall around the prison farms and nearby jungles.
The Warden didn’t give two shits if people chose the life of a Striker. It was their death wish and one less mouth to feed. He even made it easy to escape: there was always at least one section of fencing that had its electricity switched off.
And today, it was that piece straight ahead—as if this had all been planned just for Mel. As if someone wanted her to live out there instead of rotting in the compound.
Mel kicked into a jog toward the chain-link fence, pulse dancing dangerously fast. That wouldn’t do—oh, no. She had to get her adrenaline under control stat.
The rest of the plants blurred into a mass of green as Mel honed in on a single fern. Its fingerlike leaves seemed to beckon to her, taunting.
At ten paces from the fence, she eased to a stop and inhaled deeply into her stomach. Her pulse slowed, her awareness increased. The sound of insects and distant prison conversations grew sharper as the layout of the jungle separated into navigable pieces. She’d cross the fence, run toward that spiky hedge, twirl behind it, and then keep close to the ground until she hit the tree-line.
A door slammed with a resounding clang! The mess hall; the other prisoners had finished their sandwiches. They’d march onto the rec tarmac at any moment, then around the women’s shower after that—and then the guards would definitely see Kress’s body.
After one more controlled breath—the boot steps of Mel’s fellow inmates stomping nearer—she bolted into action.
In half a moment, she reached the fence. A single jump later, and her fingers were locked around the chains, her boots shoved in as she scrambled up. The fence rattled—clink, clink, clink.
She reached the top, came face to face with the fern, and then she was leaping over. The air whizzed past her ears.
She slammed into the ground. Her ankles screamed and her knees popped, but Ronin’s training took over. She propelled forward, transferring gravity’s power into a roll.
Before the other prisoners had even reached the outhouses, she was back on her feet and sprinting full-speed, sweat burning her eyes. The soft soil cushioned each step as she flew through leaves and tall grass, over tree stumps and hedges..
Yet as Mel ran, gaze focused on the ground ahead, ears on high-alert, she started to smile—teeth bared and everything.
Because she was a Striker now, and this was the first time in her entire twenty-four years of living that she’d ever had a taste of absolute freedom.
It tasted good.

Tell me about the one who loved him - A Sirius Black Imagine
‘Professor Lupin? Er - I mean, Remus?’ asked Harry.
Remus looked at the young boy. His heart would always burst when he saw the young man. Each day he’d grow was a day he looked more like his father.
‘Yes Harry?’ replied Remus.
Harry sat at the table with his former professor. The Weasleys house was uncommonly quiet, he was not used for them not being there.
‘I was wondering… Sirius earlier, he said something about er… somebody he wanted to see for a very long time. Do you reckon who would that be?’
Remus’ face became serious.
‘I’ll take that as a yes, then’ said Harry, noticing Remus’s sudden expression.
Remus tried to smile to the young boy.
‘Who’s that person, then?’
‘He shouldn’t go… he’s going to make himself found’ Remus sighed.
‘Is that person could turn him in? We have to stop him!’ shouted Harry, getting up in a hurry.
‘Sit down, Harry… she won’t put him in danger, of that I’m sure. He’d just better leave the past where it is. I’ll try to find him later, put a stop to that.’
Harry sat down again, with more questions in his mind.
‘She?’ said Harry.

ILVERMORNY HEADCANON [House Common Rooms]
WAMPUS
The House of Wampus is located directly in plain sight; the very front entrance of Ilvermony.
On either side of the very front entrance of the school, there are two sets of suits of armor positioned on either side. These enchanted armors are typically used to guide First Year around the mind-boggling castle. However, if one were to go to set on the left hand side of the door, the armors that constantly bicker night and day, and be a Wampus student, the suits will drag their longswords and cut along the castle’s outer wall (to the utter infuriation of the professors, who’d reminded the suits time and time against that they need only to trace the wall to get the door open) to open the Wampus Common Room entrance. At one time, there use to be a silly password or ID to get into the room, however, that had long since been forgotten as only Wampus students have been found to out-yell the enchanted suits.
The common room, itself, is something very reflective of the actual wampus house; it’s warm and cozy, with plush furniture and wooden walls and frames like a hunting lodge. There are magical weapons decorated along the walls, along with various trinkets that students had nicked from the confiscated drawers of the teachers. Books and notes on hexes and Dark Magic are scattered about for students to learn from.
Four large corridors are located on each face of the common room. Two are for the boy and girls’ bedrooms (which are notoriously messy to the point of humor) whilst the other two lead to a large set of catacombs that lead to multiple spots hidden around the grounds. Upperclassmen Wampuses are responsible for nightly patrols to make sure that students and/or intruders are wandering about.
THUNDERBIRD
Sitting high above the hills of Mount Greylock sits the nets of the Thunderbirds.
To actual reach the impossibly high treehouses, Thunderbird students must venture to an enchanted tapestry on the highest floor of the castle. Hanging on one of the walls is a rather large tapestry that, daily, will change its overall design to reflect a different area of the world. Students must correctly name the location in order to have the tapestry scoop them up, and fling them up from the castle to a landing station connected to the treehouses,.
The treehouses, themselves, hang on the innermost trees of Ilvermorny’s forest. A series of rope bridge and magical trees which move their branches for platforms are the modes of movement between the houses and the common room, which is located right beside the landing station for the house, underneath a small gazebo-type roofing.
Not many pieces of furniture are located in the common room; only a small set of chairs and a large cabinet piece filled with items and supplies for every good Thunderbird’s newest exploration. It it restocked every morning by the school’s helpers, so there will never be a day where one goes without a compass or a set of rations. A helpful thing when it comes for upperclassmen when it comes to their school duties.
PUKWUDGIE
It’s a common joke at Ilvermorny that Pukwudgie students live in the school’s vibrant greenhouse.
And, really, it isn’t far at all from the truth.
There are countless pieces of plant life in the glassy classroom, but behind one, a large shrub tucked between two more interesting herb trees, lays the Pukwudgie common room. Getting in changes by the daily, just as the Thunderbird’s common room. Pukwudgie students are given the task of identifying a new herb or flower that grows on their shrub. Naming it will make the shrub part to allow access into the room. However, if one were to attempt to cheat and tell their fellow classmates what is blooming that day, they will be blasted by a rotten stench by the shrub before being let in.
Inside the common room, there is a small, yet lush relaxation/break room for Pukwudgies to unwind after stressful classes. A large hearth and velvety armchairs are there for every students’ disposal, as well as a vast collection of textbooks and drinks that are constantly being restocked. Students tend to love to curl up with one of each beside the towering windows during the evenings.
There are two non-dormitory doors are located in the common room. The first being a door leading to a staircase that is connected to the Nurse’s Office. The second is a small, fully-stocked, private workroom that students had use for personal research. Great discoveries have been made there, and they are continued to be made there every year.
HORNED SERPENT
There is only one appropriate location for the house of the mind; the library.
Entrance is located on the top story of the library. Behind a small maze of bookshelves, there is a portrait, hanging within a golden frame, that has a different scholar within it every week. This scholar can range from the minds of Merlin to Harry Houdini, to whomever has a mind special enough to guard the Horned Serpent common room.
To gain entrance, each student must engage in a light debate with that of the scholar. The topic is random, mostly based on whatever that scholar is pondering in that moment, and ranges far. Some debates can only take a few moments whilst others have ended in students falling asleep from exhaustion outside the door. It all depends on the mind, really.
The Horned Serpent’s common room is very similar in the aspect of the Pukwudgie common room; very lush and soft, and perfect for late night studying. A monstrous bookcase is located on the side of the common room, filled to the brim with books of every sort. It’s a tradition for graduating Horned Serpents to leave their favorite book on the shelf for the younger students. It’s in order to have students vary their minds and discover things in a collection that one couldn’t always find in the library.

A Court of Hearts and Darkness Chapter Twenty Eight
It’s been over a century since the epic and bloody war against Hybern, but a new, unprecedented horror lies in wait to threaten everything the Inner Circle holds dear.
At a mere 17, it seems that the only one who can save them is the Heir to the Night Court, Feyre and Rhysand’s daughter Eleana, but as a creature so vile promises to kill everyone she loves, she must combat the urge to succumb to the darkness herself. The key to success lies hidden within her mate, the bastard born Kaden, who is as oblivious to the bond as her Court is oblivious to the war on the horizon.
With the help of her cousin and warrior Felix, the son of the famed Nesta and Cassian, they will try to save everything they hold dear, hopefully before the darkness takes them all.
(This fic was written pre-acowar, so please bear in mind there are some small differences but it can still hopefully be enjoyed!)

-Chapter 28-
Kaden awoke to Azriel gently nudging his shoulder, his eyes barely having to adjust in the still-dark room. For a moment, he felt confusion – about where he was, what he was doing – but he could never escape reality long. Kaden stood from his place on the floor, his gaze shooting between Thea and Quathryn who were both still asleep. He nodded to himself – it was good that they slept and dreamt if it meant it kept them away from this world for just a little bit. A world darkened, ripped and unable to be fixed.
Azriel patted Kaden’s hair and cocked his head in a sign of asking him to leave the room. Kaden checked the young girls once again, then followed Azriel from the room, shutting the door behind him. When they were done, he would open it again. He knew from experience that once you left the room you could no longer hear any of the noise from within, and he would hate to leave and for the girls to wake up and think they were alone.
“How are you?” Azriel asked.
Kaden ran his hand over his face and through his hair. “I don’t know,” he said, and it was true.
Once Cassian had left with the assurance that Azriel would be home soon and there were enough wards on the house to keep his children safe, Kaden retired to his room. He let Quathryn have the bed, she’d spread herself out like a starfish and was dribbling on his pillow, and Thea was nice and snug in her makeshift crib on top of his pianoforte. He took the floor, finding comfort in the place he knew best.
And for the first time, as he slept that night, he knew what it was like to have an Eleana-calibre night terror. Thankfully, he was quiet, and was honestly astonished at the fact. But when he woke up, he could’ve sworn he was still there, in the mountains, watching in horror as his best friend’s ghost rose from his mutilated body. When he realised what was happening, he reached out to Eleana, desperate for her comfort, but her shield was harder than ever. He needed her now more than he ever had before, and he knew she needed him as well. There were things he needed to tell her – something that he thought he’d found out about them that she needed to know.
He cried into the crook of his own arm until he fell asleep again.
“How are the girls? I checked on Cassian just before I came home, and he said they were here.”
“They’re fine – as good as they can be.”
“Kaden…” Azriel looked hesitant but reigned himself. “We can’t find Laya. Rhys and Feyre are downstairs, and they’re starting to get really worried. I wanted to let you rest, but we need your help.”
“Of course. I want to have her home as much as anyone else.” Kaden shook out his hair and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He opened the door right before brushing past Azriel to go downstairs. He met Feyre and Rhys in the hallway, the two pale and shaking with concern. The High Lady whispered her thanks, and you could see the gratitude from the High Lord in his eyes.
He nodded at them and started to walk away, his head higher than it had been in days now that he had a purpose.
“Wait.” From behind Feyre and Rhysand, Morrigan rose from the couches. In his sleep deprived state, he didn’t even notice her. Which caused him immense guilt, as this woman had done so much for him and he had forgotten her.
Kaden turned to look at her, Mor frowning at the sight of the dark bags under his eyes. She approached him with open arms, and he let her embrace him – needing a motherly hug. “Come back soon, okay? I want you home and safe with us.”
He hugged her back tightly, and with that, he left to find his dark rose.

Reblogging not just because special effects are cool but because body doubles, stunt doubles, acting doubles, talent doubles — all the people whose faces we’re not supposed to see but whose bodies make movies and tv shows possible — these people need and deserve more recognition. We see their bodies onscreen, delight in the shape and motion of those bodies, but even as we pick apart everything else that goes on both on and behind the screen, I just don’t see the people who are those bodies getting the love and recognition they deserve.
We’re coming to love and recognize actors who work in full-body makeup/costumes, such as Andy Serkis, or actors whose entire performances, or large chunks thereof, are motion captured or digitized (lately sometimes also Andy Serkis!). But people like Leander Deeny play an enormous part in making characters such as Steve Rogers come to life, too. Body language is a huge part of a performance and of characterization. For characters/series with a lot of action, a stunt person can have a huge influence on how we read and interpret a character, such as the influence Heidi Moneymaker has had on the style and choreography of Black Widow’s signature fighting style. Talent doubles breathe believability and discipline-specific nuance into demanding storylines.
Actors are creative people themselves, and incredibly important in building the characters we see onscreen. But if we agree that they’re more than dancing monkeys who just do whatever the directors/writers say, then we have to agree that doubles are more than that, too. Doubles make creative decisions too, and often form strong, mutually supportive relationship with actors.

I’ve got a relationship that goes back many, many years with Dave. And I would hate for people to just see that image of me and Dave and go, “oh, there’s Dan Radcliffe with a person in a wheelchair.” Because I would never even for a moment want them to assume that Dave was anything except for an incredibly important person in my life.

With modern tv- and film-making techniques, many characters are composite creations. The characters we see onscreen or onstage have always been team efforts, with writers, directors, makeup artists, costume designers, special effects artists, production designers, and many other people all contributing to how a character is ultimately realized in front of us. Many different techniques go into something like the creation of Skinny Steve — he’s no more all Leander Deeny than he is all Chris Evans.
But as fandom dissects the anatomy of scenes in ever-increasing detail to get at microexpressions and the minutiae of body language, let’s recognize the anatomy in the scenes, too. I don’t mean to take away from the work Chris Evans or any other actors do (he is an amazing Steve Rogers and I love him tons), but fandom needs to do better in recognizing the bodies, the other people, who make up the characters we love and some of our very favourite shots of them. Chris Evans has an amazing body, but so does Leander Deeny — that body is beautiful; that body mimicked Chris Evans’s motions with amazing, skilled precision; that body moved Steve Rogers with emotion and grace and character.
Fandom should do better than productions and creators who fail to be transparent about the doubles in their productions. On the screen, suspension of disbelief is key and the goal is to make all the effort that went into the production vanish and leave only the product itself behind. But when the film is over and the episode ends, let’s remember everyone who helped make that happen.

I applaud these guys as much as the suit actors in my japanese tokusatsu shows. They do just as much work.
All of this. Also anyone who says VFX is ruining films needs to learn about film history and then apologise to everyone for being simultaneously ignorant and arrogant.

Trigger Warnings: Physical and Minor Verbal Abuse
‘Cause you don’t feel pretty, you just feel used.
Feyre woke up to both Lucien and Rhysand’s arms over her and a throbbing headache. She twisted slightly and gently moved out of their hold, though she never wanted to leave. Tamlin would likely wake up soon, and if she wasn’t there he’d throw a fit.
She wasn’t surprised when neither of them woke to her movements. She climbed carefully over Rhys and placed her feet on the floor. She reached up to push back a piece of her hair, brushing her face and realising she hadn’t taken off her makeup from last night.
Feyre sighed, walking across the hall to her room and into its adjoining bathroom. While looking at her disheveled self in the mirror, she turned the faucet to hot. Feyre rubbed away her makeup, contemplating how she was going to breakup with Tamlin.

be kind. be ridiculously, radically, endlessly kind. be a part of someone’s good day. send nice thoughts, send positive vibes, send support and love and well wishes. be kind. so often we wish for tomorrow to be a good day when we are at our lowest. some sort of sign that it gets better. be a part of that better day for someone. the world does not magically decide that it will be softer on you today, tomorrow, the next day. and sometimes it starts with a message from someone else, maybe a little bit of inner strength to pull yourself up and take a shower, maybe a bit of sunlight makes the day better. but it’s these small things, these soft things that make a day better. so be kind. don’t ever think about being anything other than kind. be a part of someone’s good day because you don’t know how desperate they might be for it.
