alright everyone is being sassy but nobody has brought up the actual reason why scientists are interested in the titanic in the notes

Per wikipedia:

The Titanic was made of steel, presumably to resist corrosion (i mean. thats why boats are made of steel i assume) but even when iron/steel rusts people did not expect to find like. decomposition. bacteria are EATING the titanic.

and there's wood furniture from the titanic that isn't decaying. hell, there are wood ships at the bottom of the ocean that archaeologists study. so the expectation people have for the titanic is not that the steel would decompose at the bottom of the ocean. Even in 100 years, since there are much more ancient preserved wooden ships iirc.

(im not particularly knowledgeable about ships, i just had heard about the science going on around the titanic so i wanted to clarify that on this post for people)

Not a marine biologist but biologist enough to weigh in on this. The reason we have iron eating bacteria but not wood eating bacteria at the bottom of the ocean is simple. Hydrothermal vents release a cocktail of different mineral ores into the ocean. And bacteria and other organisms evolved alongside those so they evolved to digest these, like iron or other metal ores

Wood however does not exist at the bottom of the ocean since it basically never sinks down, even when logs are flushed out into the ocean they basically never end up at the ocean floor. So there's no bacteria that evolved to decompose lignin, which is already complex enough to decompose on the surface. And that's why wooden ships or the furniture on the Titanic stay intact for hundreds of years or longer.

Okay, but I remember reading a magazine stating that the titanic would basically be gone by now because of the rust eating the ship.

The sister ship HMHS Britannic is still perfectly preserved because of the way it sank, and partly in due to the coral that has grown around it keeping the structure in tact I believe was the reason.

Cullen caught the moment Ellana entered the hall as a ripple of excitement passed through the room. Though he couldn't yet see her, he did see the others entering with her: Bull was, as always, towering over the crowd, but he also caught sight of Cassandra ducking to the side, then Blackwall also attempting to slip out of view. At least, as out of view as one could be given the circumstances of having just helped save the world.

When Ellana stepped into view, his breath caught short. They had seen very little of each other in the hours since she had returned; Josephine immediately pulled her away to clean up. Apparently cleaning up also included dressing up.

For the first time since the Winter Palace, her dark hair was tamed. Instead of the usual plain tunic and leggings that she wore around Skyhold, tonight she was wrapped in blue silk. It seemed she even allowed for her lips to be painted, a striking red visible even from a distance. Cullen wanted nothing more than to kiss them.

it installs a user-login-time "startup" executable that ignores any windows directives to disable it on startup. doing so only removes the even-more-malicious taskbar-icon-creating advertisement-notification-creating process. no matter what you do, the sleeper "updater" process starts when you log in, and runs perpetually

it sends & receives encrypted network traffic both periodically and non-periodically. both are bad, both are suspicious, and a program doing both is more suspicious than the sum of their parts. and to boot: acrobat will polymorphically edit its code after such network activity

this isn't new: it has always done this. now, it does not even do the thing it is meant to: provide a way to interact with documents, which is amongst the very first features computers were built to provide. you can merely open PDFs and read some of their content in the narrow space between the requests for adobe to give them your money, and interface for features you cannot use (because you don't) or do not, have not, and will not ever need

adobe and microsoft would very much like the user's cultural norms around computers to allow for advertisement built into the local software and even operating system itself. the web being 100% advertisements was not enough! sure enough, acrobat will hijack the windows notifications system thing to give you the 2026 equivalent of pop-ups

i don't really know enough about windows software equivalents, so i'll paypal $20 to the first person that reblogs this with a list of 3-5 PDF reader/editor/etc acrobat equivalents that meet the following criteria:

open source, locally-built executables must match checksum of prebuilt distributed executable

no paid features/premium version/subscription/whatever

not a toy hobby project thing, must be windows-users-proof

Firefox's built-in PDF.js viewer: does everything you could want from a basic viewer, fast enough search, and can now do annotations for filling in forms and such

KDE Okular: is a decent viewer and can also do basic annotations, and is so not-a-toy that you can even download it on the Windows app store.

LibreOffice Draw: I don't ever really like having to open this but if you have to edit a PDF in detail it does work, and doesn't just vomit up a bunch of polygons when you give it text to work with. Better as an authoring tool than an editor.

Okay, so... for the past 1,500 years, China has had an artificial Grand Canal essential to traffic between the North and South. They had genius engineers building bridges, dams, water-mills, and irrigation systems. They understood hydrology. Yes the Yellow River silts up like a motherfucker, but that is not an insurmountable problem.

So my question is, what was the role of humans in these course changes? Did the river just lol randomly move and people went "well I guess I'll just die then", or were there factors like people failing to dredge active channels, poorly maintaining weirs or levees, actively digging new channels, and/or sabotaging pre-existing waterworks?

Did the river just move, or was it sometimes stolen?

TODAY I HAVE LEARNED:

Not only does the Yellow River fundamentally say "haha fuck you" to any human attempt to dam or control it, but messing around with its water control systems has been a fundamental part of military strategy for thousands of years.

In fact, the military use of dam destruction and water diversion in China in the twentieth century alone would require several library shelves to completely document, and the books would emit soft sounds of weeping at night.

In the second half of the 20th century the Chinese government dedicated significant amounts of effort to making sure the Yellow River did not flood, and by the end of the century, the river expressed its gratitude by silting up so much it stopped reaching the ocean at all sometimes.

It's official: I am terrified of the Yellow River and suggest we give that motherfucker any propitiation it wants.

its not that fiction doesnt have its place, its important and healthy to exercise the imagination, but non-fiction can do so much to boost and supplement that. if not for yourself, for your art or for the people you're around
