⋆𖦹⋆ˎˊ˗ Discussing DID and Alexithymia

(Pspspspsp, if you don’t want to read all of this which I entirely understand, I summarized it at the end in a few sentences)

I’m not making this post for any particular reason, other than the fact that recently I saw someone mention how they barely see Alexithymia talked about when it comes to DID, and I agree strongly. So, I figured, why not make a post about it?

For anyone unaware, Alexithymia is when a person has difficulty experiencing, understanding, differentiating/identifying, and expressing their emotions. It is also known as Emotional Blindness. Several factors can cause it, ranging from past experiences, to genetics, to certain medical conditions; “About 10 to 13 percent of the population has this trait” (Psychology Today). Due to not being able to process one’s own emotions properly, it affects the ways in which those people react to other people’s emotions. This can lead to accidental miscommunication, relationships suffering, etc. Alexithymia has shown itself to be common in those with childhood trauma, PTSD, Eating Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Anxiety, and Autism (Psychology Today).

Furthermore, it has been shown that coexistence between dissociation and Alexithymia is rather high, despite them being two entirely separate phenomena. Multiple studies have been done to see the correlation between the two, and a one in particular shows that out of 173 subjects, 20 were found to be Alexithymic, 15 reported a history of physical abuse, and scores of dissociation, depression, and anxiety were shown to be significantly higher in the Alexithymic group. The study concluded that the scores for anxiety and Alexithymia and the histories of physical abuse all predicted dissociation, showing high correlation with one another. (Alexithymia and dissociative tendencies in an adolescent sample from Eastern Turkey)

The fact that Alexithymia and physical abuse was shown to coexist strongly with dissociation shows how common it likely is in disorders like DID, or even BPD (which i also saw multiple studies for, but am not going to get into in turn of it not being my initial intention). DID, being a trauma based disorder and form of C-PTSD, usually stems from histories of abuse, physical abuse being common amongst survivors. So in a disorder based around trauma and dissociation, it’s extremely likely for someone with said disorder to also have Alexithymia. I’d actually go as far as to say it could be part of the cause of it.

I couldn’t find any sources to back me up on this particular theory, so I’m relying strictly on logic. Since Alexithymia was shown to be a key pointer to dissociation and not the other way around, I find it easy to believe that predisposed Alexithymia—possibly through genetics or other factors unrelated to trauma—could be a factor in why the trauma leading to DID was happening in the first place. As I stated earlier, Alexithymia is shown to have an effect on many forms of relationships. As someone who has had my parents become upset with me due to me not being emotional enough or showing the “right emotion at the time”, as well as parents who have overreacted greatly to said “wrongdoing” on my part (I won’t go into detail but I’m sure you can have a vague idea), I think it just adds to why Alexithymia can go hand in hand with DID, whether it was present before or after trauma.

So, to summarize my main point to this mini-essay, Alexithymia makes understanding and expressing emotions difficult, and has been shown to go hand in hand in people with counts of past trauma and dissociation as well as other mental disorders. There’s an extremely likely chance that many people with DID have Alexithymia, as it goes hand in hand with a lot of symptoms. It’s also difficult to deal with and should be greatly talked about more.
