Did you guys know on Rikers Island (a huge prison) there are hunger strikers? They’re into their sixth day. In palestine, palestinian prisoners have been freed and have had their sentences reduced through hunger strike (often after a 100+ days) and I can’t help hopefully believe that the recent wins have made news to prisons around the world. Maybe not but it was also through social media and on ground protests in solidarity with these hunger strikers that Israel was pressured to release them or deal with the ramifications of what could’ve been preventable death of prisoners. It’s sad that many Americans (white) do not include prisoners in their activism but there’s been deaths as a result of covid in American prisons and that just makes local news and it’s definitely not right

Staff shakeup at correction department as detainees go on hunger strike

Courtney Gross has more on the story.

A voicemail from one detainee to his attorney obtained by NY1 from earlier this week described the protest.

“We have a list of reasonable, you know what I’m saying, things that we would like to bring to the table so we can get things rolling, such as law library, recreational, mental health service, and medical,” said detainee Ervin Bowins. “Stuff like that that we’re not being afforded, mandatory minimum standards for a human being.”

Hundreds at Rikers Protest Conditions, Citing Covid and the Cold

Detainees in one jail at the Rikers Island complex are refusing to eat Correction Department meals.

Last year was the deadliest in New York City’s jails since 2013, with 16 people dying after being held in custody. Their deaths came amid a sharp rise in absenteeism among correction officers which began in 2020 and has continued into this year. At a Board of Correction hearing on Tuesday, a staff member for Mr. Molina, who was appointed the city’s Correction Commissioner in December, said that 2,300 of the close to 9,000 staff members are currently out sick.
