(posting this separately from Soon To Be Popping Up rp ad bc of the cut + picture) clover’s going to be dual wielding costumes for the event to get the most bang for his buck. he spent as much dust as possible on cheap costumes and candy and by god is he not going to let his money go to waste. “ the name’s black jack - and does that mean i pass, then? is there a prize? ” he was a bit relieved that his answer was at least a bit satisfactory as the question itself had caught him very off guard - and especially considering he wasn’t one much for riddles in the first place. 

 “ oh - what about you? do you have a name?  ” he’d almost forgotten to ask. if the green guy was bored (or desperate? or desperately bored? ) enough to talk to him, he might as well be hospitable about it.

Black Jack, huh? He’d be lying if that wasn’t a little familiar, in a ‘yes that’s obviously a very normal name’ way. More carapaces have been showing up in this city than he thought there’d be, so if this guy’s just wearing a costume, then maybe? Hopefully...?

“A pleasure, Black Jack! And there sure is! Your prize is...” His hands duck under his chin, head tilted and eyes big, all cute. “Talking to little old Clover! That’s me.” Wink. “Because I don’t have anything else. But making new pals is fun, right? Everybody likes that!” Clover doesn’t hop off his branch just yet, but he does lean way in, holding onto it. “You been here long? Or just passing through, hehe.”

Oh he’s hitting back! Some fight in this one! Good! Guide only laughs louder, even if he’s a little disappointed that Clover managed to get away so quickly and easily. The second he’s out of his grasp, he reels his tongue back in like a tape measure and snaps his jaws(?) shut; grinning out of the corners of the chest’s lid. It doesn’t falter even as the rock hits his front, though one of the eyes squeezes shut just in case. He’s had enough things stabbed or hitting his eyes in his lifetime.

“Generous? I don’t exactly think trying to pocket things from something left abandoned would be seen as a ‘generous’ gesture from someone else.” He laughs, still not fully opening the trunk to reveal if anything’s actually in there. “Maybe I should have put a sign, though. ‘Free shit here!’ Maybe that’d be too suspicious, though.” He purses his ‘lips’— at least as much as a treasure chest can— almost scrunching at one corner like he was slouching or leaning. “Kid, if I were really being cruel, I would have actually tried eating you for real. I was just going to drag you in here, could have been far worse. Mimics aren’t particularly nice, you should be glad I’m not actually one! You have to keep your eyes open, or something will really get you.” He sticks his tongue out to slap near his eye for emphasis.

Part of him knows he should really be skedaddling instead of trying to talk with this... Thing, but another part of him really wishes he had any sort of weapon on him to teach him a proper lesson. As things are, in this shitty city with this shitty costume, Clover just keeps picking up pebbles to whip towards the front of the chest. “If you leave a big chest out with a big key next to it, you’re asking people to open it up and take something! I was just doing what felt right!”

He doesn’t get much of a chance to keep defending himself after. Yeah, this big not-a-treasure-chest could’ve done a lot worse, but calling him kid is pretty bad. “I- Listen! I don’t need some big mimic- costume- whatever- telling me to look out like I’m some fucking six year old!” Whatever fear was keeping him away before is thoroughly gone now, and he starts to roll his sleeves up as he stomps back towards the chest. “I’ve been around the block more times than you can count! I’ve watched planets get sucked into dark pockets! I’ve knocked peoples’ teeth out for less!” Tail puffed up, ears back, Clover throws his gloves off to the side. “Open up and I’ll give you a real reason to hide in there!”

— black jack was caught seriously out of it, as he was spoken to right while he was doing something just a little embarrassing - writing down notes, that is. they were short; it was just so he could keep track of where he’s been. he really wasn’t quite used to the layout of the circular city yet, and wanted to be out of the confused state as quickly as possible.

he looked up at the little purple-wearing-green-man ( not the most pleasant color combination ), which was an appearance that caught him off guard for a split second. he quickly shook it off, though; he was pretty sure he’d seen weirder, even before he found himself in this place with all the people that looked right out of fantasy novels.

( and, hell, especially now that more and more people were looking like they came right out of a cheesy halloween movie. )

“ i can’t say i know… is it that they both start with the same sound? ” 

— he might as well humor the little guy. 

He actually guessed! That’s a big improvement from being either totally ignored or told to screw off, especially since this guy’s actually doing something- drawing, maybe? People seem to do that a lot around here. It’s kind of hard to tell from this angle though, and if he’s being honest, he doesn’t really care unless it’s a portrait of the leprechaun himself.

The answer he gives does make Clover pause, tilt his head, run it through his mind. “Ra-... Wri-...” A hum, and he sits up, legs dangling off the branch. He rubs at his chin and keeps rocking side to side while he thinks.

“Y’know, the answer’s supposed to be ‘because Poe wrote on both!’ But,” he leans forward, legs and tail swinging, “your answer’s pretty fun too! Outta left field. You got a name down there, pal?”

As Clover gets closer and leans up against the huge chest, it becomes a little clearer that it’s not quite just a weird pink chest. The red ‘vines’, upon closer inspection, seem to pulsate faintly and look way more like veins that merge into the surface. The surface is… warm, for some reason, and it’s increasingly clear that maybe there’s something wrong with this chest. As he shoves the key into the lock, the edge of the trunk’s lid curls up at the corners to reveal thin long teeth. The key clicks, and the two ‘glass’ eyes swerve to stare at him.

With a loud snarl, the lid pops open as a huge tongue whips out to try coiling around Clover’s waist. Something inside the chest— still shut enough to keep it hidden— breaks out laughing. “Really? Falling for one of the oldest tricks in the book!”

The warmth could at least be explained by the sun, given that it’s still out even in autumn, but the rest... Maybe there’s a difference between being people-perceptive and surroundings-perceptive. Maybe he really should have not gone towards and tried to open the obviously trapped chest. Little regrets.

Clover lets out a high-pitched, distinctly cat-like yowl as the tongue curls around him, hands immediately slapping at it. Luckily or unluckily, whichever, he manages to slip out as soon as it gets a grip on him, letting him scramble away with his tail literally between his legs. Once he’s- hopefully?- a safe distance away, he hisses, patting himself down for a weapon. Stupid city, taking away his plank and pistol. “Aw, fuck off!” He doesn’t have anything on hand, obviously, so he just picks up a small stone off the ground and throws it the offending chest. “It’s not my fault! I thought someone was being generous! You’re just playing a real cruel trick!”

Well, that's odd. Sitting out in a park, nestled under a tree that's starting to become rather bare, is an ominously large treasure chest. It's large enough for the average human to easily sit in it; but that's not the oddest thing about it. Its surface is painted a soft pink, and there's red leafless vines curling over its surface. The front is decorated with two equally huge polished glass eyes, one on the lid and one below the lock.

Oddly, it seems to have been there for a while, with how the leaves are piled around it and some sitting on top. It looks unlocked if the front latch means anything, and there's a matching pink key tossed to the side. How this managed to get here, and stay here, is unknown.

Neat, free shit!

Free if you’re not afraid of handling huge, weird, out-of-place chests, anyway, and with Clover’s luck combined with really the only power this cat costume’s got, he’s not even the littlest bit worried about this being a trap or anything. As if one of the other weirdos in this city would just put down a big treasure chest and its key just to have it be loaded with something. Perish the thought!

With his size, it’s a little tough to actually get the key and situate it in the slot and everything. Stuff being normal human sized means it takes two hands for him, and with him being totally unafraid, he just leans against the chest itself while he shoves said key in, giving it a quick turn to properly unlock. What could be hidden in this big ol’ box...

Given that he doesn’t know where he will end up, but has a feeling it might not even be as good as here, Dirk doesn’t mind being stuck here for an extended period of time as much as someone who has a place to go back to. That said, he did notice the fallen expression, but tactfully doesn’t point it out. So far, the amount of time people have been here seems to vary so widely he wouldn’t even be able to predict it. “Mhm. It was quite the culture shock at first, going from four people total to however many people are in the four wards plus the outer areas, but I like to think I’ve managed reasonably well.”

Lying is pretty easy to detect when the entirety of your interactions with people was learning to read them and how to react. But if all the guy was is not thrilled to meet him, what does Dirk care? Or maybe he is lying about thinking Dirk was fun. Again, not something that bothers him any. “This is the first time we’re ‘hanging out,’ and it’s only because we were randomly assigned the same house. Try not to hurt yourself with that reach, bro. They came with the apartment. My original apartment that I grew up with. They didn’t come with this place here. My Bro left them for me. One of the best things he left. Still not sure how some of that shit survived, but past me definitely wasn’t complaining about it.”

Four people to a whole city. Woof. Clover may have been lying about getting overwhelmed himself, but that feels pretty daunting- even he’d had the fourteen others around at the worst of times, plus every other shell in the old City. He lets out an empathetic hum and just gives a nod. Asking about why there was only four people before might be a sensitive subject, and he’s not trying to deliberately step on toes (yet).

Although, y’know, maybe he should. Dirk’s tone is kind of grating, not to mention him getting called out on trying to be overly friendly, so, y’know. Not a terrific first impression. “I know I know I know, but! Listen! I swear I’ve seen those before- not on you, obviously, this is the first time we’ve met! Maybe someone took ‘em for a spin before you got them? Not your ‘bro?’ Something...” He really wracks his brain, leaning away from him. “Something small? Not a human! You’ve gotta trust me on this! Maybe they’re real popular!”

Wow. This absolutely smacks of trying too hard. But Dirk is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and not call him on it. Talking to new people, especially people you’re required to share space with, can be a bit daunting. “Mhm. Although I’ve been here over a year and a half now, so I think I’ve got a handle on being overwhelmed by crowds. As in it doesn’t happen anymore.” He doesn’t much care for the leaning, turning more to face Clover as a subtle way of getting a touch bit more away from him without revealing that is what he is trying to do. “I’m Dirk. And I suppose whether I’m fun or not all depends upon what your idea of fun is. So what’s your idea of fun then, since you’re tellin’ me I give off those vibes.”

Dirk can probably see his smile falter when he says how long he’s been here. He’s still hoping, praying that he’ll be out of this city and back to the right City before his one year’s up, but... He can think about that later. For now, Clover nods, putting a hand to his chin. “I bet! That’s a lotta time to get used to all the people here. Woof.”

“Great to meet you, Dirk! I’m Clover,” and shit, lying was a lot harder when you did it to strangers. He at least moves back to his own cushion, no longer leaning way into the other’s space. “Well, y’know! Those fancy glasses give off a real familiar feeling, I think, and I’ve only ever hung out with pretty fun people! So you’ve gotta be something, right?” His head tilts to the other side, squinting up at his shades. “Where’d you get those, anyway?”

It was perhaps the only magic that he ever knew right now since this was a temporary thing as of the moment. He wonders if he could do this outside of the costume. 

 “I am Runar. Nice to meet you.” though you are very green and sus. “Are you alright though? Do you need to head inside?”

Clover has no idea if Runar’s actually in costume or not- people in nice robes are a dime a baker’s dozen in this city- so as far as he knows, that’s just regular big cat man magic up his sleeve. Or staff, if you will.

“I’m Clover! Pleasure’s mine, Runar. And, y’know,” he gives his head a weak bonk, “I could probably use a little ice to soothe this over its last leg. If that’s not too much to ask for!”

there was a surge of emotion not his own, but perhaps is and before he knows it. he is emmiting a weak healing spell on to the bump with his hands, gasps! He…doesn’t have enough magic to do anything magic related at all but still-

 “Is…this ok? I admit this is a first for me.”

Considering the only magical stuff Clover knows is time-related and whatever the little Lord personally had going on, the fact he actually starts feeling a little better after this guy makes his stick glow is pretty impressive! Still a bit sore, though.

“Oh, yeah! Lots better! You’re doing great.” The hand not still touching his injury, stupidly, waves up towards him. “You got a name so I can properly thank my, hehe, doc in shining armor?”

Dirk hoards a lot of things in his room. Things that probably don’t need to be in his room. But he is used to it, and he has no intention of stopping while in a communal living space with a revolving door of housemates. It seems he has stumbled on one a recent addition when he sees the small figure on the sofa. The sight gets a frown out of him. He isn’t really familiar with The Felt, but he knows them as a concept. And it seems he has been assigned what he suspects is one of them as a housemate.

The invitation gets some thought as to whether he wants to chat. Finally, he shrugs, parking himself in the open spot. It isn’t like he has anything better to do, and it is probably advisable to interact with other people living with him once in a while. “Sure. Why the hell not. Chat away, lil’ dude.”

Now that he’s really looking at this fella, something about him seems awfully familiar, but Clover’s sure he hasn’t seen that many humans before coming here. Maybe it’s just how he carries himself or whatever. Something about him that’s distantly reminiscent of some shell he used to hang with.

This guy as a whole doesn’t seem to recognize him at least, so he cranks up the charm to fourteen, hands clasping together once he takes a seat. “Sure will, ehe, dude! I’m not usually the homebody type, but with how things are in this big ol’ city, it can get pretty overwhelming, y’know?” Clover tilts his head,leaning in towards him. “So I thought, why not get all chummy with some of the folks I’ll be living with! See what they’re about! And you seem fun, if you don’t mind me saying! So,” he untwists a hand, holds it out towards him, “I’m Clover! What’s your name, friend?”

Clover doesn’t know what it is about this costume, but climbing on stuff and laying around sure is a lot more fun than it used to be! Lampposts, the tops of those windows that stick out from buildings, trees; you name it, he’ll be napping on top of one at some point.

It probably helps that they usually keep him out of reach of people who might not want to be bothered by a purple-clad green cat leprechaun.

“Hey, fella!” His tail loosely curls around the low cherry blossom branch he’s laying across, chin propped up in his hands-paws-whatevers as he looks down at this guy with the two-toned hair and stitched up face. Woof, what a costume.
