The rain thundered against the hot pavement, then evaporated as soon as it came. The sweltering steam and sheets of tepid water were enough to inspire sheltered landscapes of plastic, domed shelters that gave slight refuge to those wandering among the towering skyscrapers. Trapped tourists who had not bothered to glance at the day's weather sprinted from awning to awning, and the leather shoes of businessmen briskly clattered to their appropriate entrance. Honking buses swerved to avoid the figures emerging out of the shrouding veil while taxicabs raced for the desperate prey that lurched in front of swamped suitcases.
