For those who can relate, you know the struggle
Tech People
I'm wondering what is/are your favorite cue(s) that you've made, or sequence of cues that were successful?
I remember a cue I programmed for a narrow scary opening to an opera by Poulenc. The actor started crouched down low DSC at the lip of the stage. It had a single backlight LED wash in blue at 0.5%, and 2 MR16 footlights at 30%. That was it. It looked magical and spooky. That designer taught me a lot about being reserved and minimal effectively, and how to not just get brighter because you can.
More recently, on the Skate show, I had a 3 minute sequence with about 15 cues and 10 submaster bumps to hit exactly by visual, and when it landed it was super satisfying. And a few other âsnap snap snapâ cue sequences.
I was just working with William Close and the Earth Harp Collective, and the opening to the show was a 4 part, layered cue, where my cyc went from, what I think might have been R80 to a 2 tone split of Congo Blue and Gallo Gold over about 20 seconds, then the other CF IIâs that were floor mounted came in, in a nice green with enough blue in it to not be disgusting. Then the floor mounted VL 4Kâs kicked on in a pattern that looked really beautiful in the haze, then the top light came in, and then the sides came in last.
I unfortunately donât have a photo of that particular cue, but I do have one of my next favorite cue from the set, it was during the verse of Rocket Man.
Exploring backstage at the theatre
Prepare well. Dress appropriately and pack light. Donât bring anything valuable. You may bring a torch, but only a small one.
If itâs your first time exploring backstage, bringing someone is advisable. Bring an actor if you want adventure. Bring a technician if you want to stay safe.
When you are backstage you are between worlds. Tread carefully; the rules of the outside donât apply here.
Let the darkness wash over you. Your eyes will adjust.
Stay silent at all times. The worlds have been merging here for as long as the theatre has existed- you donât want to disturb them.
The air will feel warm and still. Donât be alarmed by sudden cold drafts though; most theatres are haunted, and theatre ghosts tend to be of a curious nature. They like to explore too.
Feel free to look around, but avoid touching anything. If you pass a props table or a preset costume, you may feel the sudden urge to pick it up. Do not do this under any circumstances! Even if you put the object back or only move it a fraction. THEY WILL KNOW. Your fate has been sealed. Itâs not a pleasant one.
You might hear music or singing coming from on stage, even if there is no performance in progress. Donât worry; theyâre probably just soundchecking click tracks. Or who knows, the theatre gets sentimental too; it may just be reliving some memories. Donât interrupt it.
Be cautious if you choose to explore the stage itself. You never know where or when you may end up.
If you choose to explore elements of the set, be aware that doors and windows may not always lead you where you would expect.
Remember rule number 7.
The piano in the corner thatâs had its strings cut? The plastic plant collecting dust under the table? The shattered remains of a plastic gun that were never cleaned up? These are all forgotten or disused elements from past productions. Pay them as much attention as you do the rest of the theatre. Fading out of existence is a lonely process and they appreciate being noticed.
Loitering in the wings will likely end painfully.
Superstitions like whistling and the Scottish Play are just that- superstitions. Still, donât tempt fate.
The theatre may not always let you go. I told you to be careful on stage.
When you are ready to leave, seek out someone who knows the way. The theatre cares for its people and wonât let you get lost when youâre with one of them.

Hi, Iâm Elton
And I am Quite Sadâ˘.
Anti wolf heck collar
âThe purpose of the collar is to protect the dog wearing it when it has to fight the wolves. The collar base protects the dogâs throat and carotid arteries, while the spikes are intended to deter bites to the neck or even injure wolves trying to do so.â
âAnd what do you get from serving humans that you do not get from running free?â sneered the wolf.
âFree food, unconditional love and tactical upgrades,â replied the herding dog.
I see your anti-wolf dogs and raise you Spanish War Dogs.
I see your Spanish war dogs and raise you the Tibetan Mastiff, which was actually bred to fight tigers and has fur so thick that it doesnât need armor
