A very hot topic right now is the terrorism. After nine-eleven security increased greatly in airports and at borders in order to try and catch any possible terrorists. Even since the increase at that time there has been even more over the years. Soon they are putting a law into order that you can no longer travel within the United States with just a driver’s license. The new law will require those who are flying to have an enhanced license or a passport. Even since I first remember flying I can see an increase in the number of security measures when traveling. One of the more recent terrorists attacks, the bombing is Paris, was a shock to everyone all around the world.  Around 130 individuals died in the attack. There have also been other recent attacks that are now bringing about very controversial issues. One of these issues includes allowing refugees into the United States. It is difficult topic to discuss. I am aware that there are probably a lot of people that will disagree with me but I feel that, for the time being, we should not allow refugees in the United States. Although I understand that not everyone of a certain race or religion is a terrorist or looking to do harm there has just been so many attacks recently and it does not seem to be getting much better. I have discussed this topic with others before and do see the other side to the argument. It is wrong the judge people and their intentions based off of where they are from. It is also hard to turn people away during a time of need, I do believe in helping others and being united. There are many innocent good people that are in need of help and somewhere safe to go, but I do not necessarily feel that being that aid at the time being is safe for the United States. It leaves the United States more vulnerable to attacks if we are taking in such a large number of refugees. It is not possible to do background checks on everyone taken in and also can be seen as racist to do so even if it is for the safety of our own country. I am not saying that we should never help other countries and be selfish, but I do think we need to evaluate the current safety of our own country at the time being.

I always get so excited when this time of year comes around. As much as I hate to see the warm weather fade away and the sun start to set earlier, there are so many things to look forward to in the next couple of months! Fall always has a great crisp smell in the air that I love. I also like the fashion that comes along with the season. The big sweaters and leggings with boots. It is always fun to go pumpkin and apple picking and do corn mazes before Halloween. I used to like the haunted houses but I always get so scared that I have just stopped putting myself through that. The movies that are on TV are always really good time, my favorite being Hocus Pocus. Fall time also means Thanksgiving, which who doesn’t love. It is literally a day you can stuff yourself with amazing food and not feel guilty about it. It is also nice to have family all together and see the ones you do not see that often besides holidays. Once Thanksgiving is over that means that its one of the best times of the year, the end of the semester haha. Although it is such a stressful time to finish up finial projects, cram in the remainder of lessons, and study for the dreaded finials week, it is amazing when it’s over. Then everyone comes home from school and you can see all your friends from high school! The week right after finials week is Christmas, which of course is the best holiday ever! I love how everyone is so happy around this time of the year. There are also some more really good movies on TV for this season too. Elf is by far one of my favorite Christmas movies. My boyfriend’s mom always watches those sappy Hallmark movies and I usually get sucked into them and end up spending a whole day just doing that. Then of course there is the Christmas cookies and the fudge, love the fudge. I feel as though the different food really is one of my favorite parts in every different holiday. The winter is also a fun time because I love to go skiing and tubing. I have definitely found that living in Buffalo is much more enjoyable when you learn to love the snow. Especially since we have it for such a long portion of the year and so much of it. I am so excited for all these things coming up! I just hope they don’t pass by too fast.

Throughout life there are many things that I want to accomplish and experience. For example, I hope to get accepted and graduate from dental school, get married some day and have kids, and build a house. But one thing I really want to experience more is traveling, specifically to participate in health missions. So far I have been on five health missions to the Dominican Republic. I went on my first mission when I was in seventh grade with my Mom. At the time I really wanted to be a vet so on my first day I went out to different farms and helped treat animals. By the end of the day I knew I did not want to be a vet. As much as I loved animals, I did not like seeing them in pain and so abused and sick. The next day my Mom had me work with one of the dentist doing restorative work and I fell in love with it. One particular patient won me over. It was a little boy that came over with his mother that had two broken front teeth. His mom began to explain to us how her son was running and fell face first and hit a rock. When he got up his mouth was pouring blood and had broken his two front teeth in half. Now all of his friends and other girls tease him that no girl will ever love him because he is too ugly without his teeth. We were able to rebuild his front teeth with resin material. When we were done, we gave him a mirror and he started to cry. When he looked at his mom she started to cry. She went on thanking us and saying how we changed her son’s life. After this experience I really became interested in dentistry and after many more missions decided I want to become a dentist and always continue to go on health missions. One other patient that I will always remember was a young pregnant girl with a severe infection in her tooth. After the tooth was removed and she was given an antibiotic the doctors began to explain to me that the infection was entering her blood stream and if it was not caught earlier could have killed her baby. Before this experience I didn’t realize how important dental health is, something I feel a lot of people aren’t aware of. These missions have really impacted my life. Not only have they helped me to decide what occupation I want to pursue, it also made me appreciate the recourses I have available to me and made me want to give back in life.

When I was about fifteen my parents started to fight a lot. Eventually my Mom and Dad stopped sleeping in the same room. The day I got my license and was driving home from my drivers test my Dad told me they were going to get divorced, which I had already seen coming. Like so many divorces, I knew this was not going to go down very well. My parents owned a restaurant together that had been in my Mom’s family for 75 years. You would think my Mom would get the restaurant, but for whatever reason, my Dad did. This clearly was not what my Mom wanted and is practically the reason they do not talk anymore. My Mom and I moved out and my Dad stayed living above the restaurant. I was happy to move in with my Mom because I loved our new place and knew that it was a time that she needed me. During the time I lived with her I had met my current boyfriend of two years. It was great because my house was right on the way to his so we hung out almost every day. It has been really great having him in my life; especially while my parents we’re going through the divorce. At first things weren’t too bad living with my Mom, I let a lot of things go because I knew she was hurting and wanted to be understanding. It wasn’t until the end of last semester that I couldn’t take it anymore. She was constantly yelling at me and blaming me for things. She made me feel like I only reminded her of my Dad and the divorce; she was taking all her anger for him out on me. I decided it was time that I left and moved back in with my Dad, she obviously was not happy about this. I went to go see her for Mothers Day and ended up getting in a screaming match with her. She was upset that I only got her a card, even though we weren’t speaking at the time. A couple months after this happened I noticed a lot of my family started ignoring me. I tried to set up therapy with my Mom but she made it so difficult between paying and other factors. To this day my Mom and I do not speak. At first it was really hard for me, but I have come to accept it for what it is. I am very grateful for the people I do have in my life, especially my amazing Dad that stands by me through everything. I am also grateful for my boyfriend that didn’t run away through all of this. Always cherish those who are close and true to you.

From reading other peoples blog it has helped me to think about how to set up my own web map for this project. There are so many creative ideas and one blog actually helped me to think about my own topic because they were kind of closely related. The comments that were left on my blog from my project one proposal also were very helpful. They included some things that made me aware of what people wanted to see from my project that I may have forgotten of not have thought to include. There are some things I now am going to change and add into my project to help support my main message.

My project will be based on the effects of food and how food changed over the years. In other words, food today helps make people bigger due to whats in the food. For example, chickens are filled with drugs being pumped into it yearly. Another example of why people aren’t as healthy as they can be is due to processed food. Processed food contains loss of nutrients, bad absorption, salt, lack of real taste, fats (saturated) and the quality isn’t that great. Processed foods will try and display their positive side which actually gives the customer a false idea(100) of what processed foods actually bring. Over a 100 years food nutrients has changed. Our grandparents are actually healthier than we might think. The studies in colorado states that the nutrient density has decreased tremendously of 40-60% over the past 100 years. Recent study also showed that only 11% of americans eat 2 fruits and 3 vegtables everyday. They claim that this unhealthy combination of nutrient poor foods of a open door for disease especially if its used as a lifetime deal. The main question that people need to ask themselves is “this food given/produced by God or (200)is it jus processed by man?” This question is a way of understanding how food has changed over the years. In the past, people killed an animal, cleaned it and then cooked it until it became edible. In today’s food world, our food is processed through test and chemicals. In my project web, I’d have a before and after affect from the difference food had on us today opposed to the food our grandparents ate. This topic can bring up a debate because even back then there were alot of unhealthy people but processed food tends to be everything we (300)eat. We are taught that the food we eat will gives us nutrients everyday and will help us sustain a good living when in reality it’s not true. Everything in today’s society is processed with food coloring, steroids etc. Our grandparents often had gardens and growing things form the ground up with provides healthy nutrients. The food we have now is actually slowly killing us individuals. If we ate food from the ground, the world would be healthier because thats how the food is given to us. It was never processed to being with. Everything we eat and digest now is man made to get money from us who eat it (customers). This can even go deeper than the topic im discussing. For example, people around the world are sick and not saved because of the man made pills thats given. If the people knew that something small as ginger or macaroot was used in people’s diet; they will live longer lives. Everything from the root/ground is good for the body but not anything processsed.

I love this topic. I completely agree with all of the points you have made in your blog and really look forward to seeing your finished project. When I was growing up my parents never fed us things that were frozen or premade. I was also never allowed to have soda or sugary cereal. Although they cooked all of our meals I know you are right about the types of steroids and food dies that are in our food. People think they are eating healthy because that is what the big businesses want the consumers to believe. Everything for them is about money. My dad was just telling me how Tyson wants to start shipping their chicken to China to be processed and then having it shipped back to the States because it is cheaper. I am excited to see your finial project.

My Project

I am really concerned about Common Core in New York State. As someone who just graduated from a NYS public school I have seen some of the changes that we’ve gone through and it’s getting ridiculous especially in the math category. I have decided to research the specific topic of math in common core in NYS further and this is what I have so far. First off I looked at the elementary school level of math. It turns out that it takes a lot of time out of the day to learn the new ways of math. I would like to show this on my map as 2 clocks, one showing a short amount of time (this one being crossed out) and the other a longer amount of time and this one being fine. I’m not sure what creative ideas I have for the map as a whole though. I was thinking of maybe drawing a giant clock and going clockwise with the pictures starting at the top and ending back there. One interesting fact that I found is that even adults can have trouble learning the new way they teach math now. I have even looked at some of the problems and I don’t quite understand them even though I’m a math education major. One way that I wish to illustrate that is to show an adult and a child together looking at a problem in confusion. One other thing I would like to show is that kids are taught a different way until these past few years and are starting to be told what they’ve learned as wrong. I feel like this might have a negative impact on children wanting to learn new things. They not be as motivated as much. I really don’t know how to show this without it being a picture that would take up my whole poster. 

I could really use help on ideas of what could make the map look interesting if anyone had any ideas. I think the clock idea is nice, but it won’t immediately express what I’ve learned. So far in brief detail this is what I’ve learned with (pictures). 1. Good Idea (Light Bulb) 2. Could Be Done Better (Don’t have a picture Yet ) 3.Takes up Time (Clocks) 3.Really Complicated and Hard to Learn (Complicated Math Problem) 4. This is all I have for now and I still need to do more research. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them and if you do look at mine I will take the time to look at your sand give my feedback. This topic is very interesting and also very important. I am interested to see what you find. I did not know that kids were being told what they were taught previously was wrong; I do agree with you that this may unmotivated some children to learn. You may be able to illustrate this by showing a child getting yelled at and they have a question mark above their head because they are confused as to why they are being yelled at. For the teacher being blamed you could do a teacher standing in front of a judge. As an education major this seems to be a very good topic for you to research.

This issue is always so interesting to me. I like to see the different ways people argue the topic. I was a little unsure as to what the direct message is you are trying to convey to the audience. Is it about marijuana or the other drugs you had mentioned? I think it would be interesting if you mentioned the ways the different drugs make people feel and the after or long term effects it has one a persons body. It also would be interesting to hear some statistics pertaining to the use of these drugs in the United Stated versus the other places of the world. It sounds like you have an interesting topic and I am excited to see the finial project.

     For my project I am focusing on the issue of overeating, specifically in the American culture and emotion overeating. Some questions I am looking to have answered are: what triggers people to overeat, is it connected to traumatic events people experience in their lives? I also want to know if it is more common among women or men. How do people feel during and after they eat? How temporary is this feeling? Another interesting thing to look into is if it is more common in men or women. Throughout my research some things I want to do may change.

     Certain things that can trigger overeating on a normal base include, but are not limited to: a life crisis or death, relationship breakdown, family changes, moving to a new place, a change in a job, school problems, and personal failure. Once an individual begins to overeat, there are many things that help to further the issue.  One source I found lists some reasons that induce overeating that I had not thought of, but can also relate to and see everyday. Some of the reasons include: convenience, visibility, mindless eating, and social influence. Other sources of overeating that I saw to be obvious were family and personal dynamics. People that tend to overeat or have a serious problem often say they find food as a source of comfort and nurture. When people feel pressured, sad, stressed out, or upset they go to food a source of comfort. When people are done eating, they often found themselves feeling guilty or sad. There typically is not much or any satisfaction a person feels after they overeat. When comparing men and women as to who tends to overeat more, men had surprisingly higher rates. Although women do tend to binge eat more, men overeat more on a common everyday lifestyle. Women tend to be more focused on their bodies then men, which affects the amount of women versus men that overeat. There are many steps an individual can take in order to stop overeating. These include: eating slowly, being aware of your problem, using smaller plates, putting junk food farther back in your cupboard so it is less visible, choose foods that fill you up faster instead of things like chips so you will not eat as much, poor things like chips into bowls so you do not eat the whole bag, and think about what you want to eat before going out with a friend so you aren’t influenced by what they order. I will use this information to help lay out my mind web on overeating.

Buffalo

     Besides the one semester that I dormed at SUNY Fredonia, I have never lived outside of Buffalo.  Although I have not really lived anywhere else, I must say that Buffalo is one of the best places to live. Those couple months I didn’t live here definitely made me appreciate it more. First of all, we have great places to shop. I know it is nothing like New York City, but the Galleria is pretty great compared to other city’s shopping places. Fredonia only has a TJ Max and a Walmart close by, it was awful. The location is also nice because we are so close to Canada. It is always fun to go over and see the Canadian side of the falls or to go shopping at the outlets if you want something different than the Galleria. During the summer time there are great concerts at the outer harbor, free ones every Thursday night.  You also can rent out kayaks, water bikes, and paddleboards on the waterfront, which is really fun! Water works is a new restaurant and bar that just opened that is cool place to go to.  During there summer there is always really fun festivals to go to such as the Allentown art festival. Food truck Tuesday is another really fun thing to experience. The Erie County Fair is always a great way to end the summer. When the weather is nice I enjoy going out and go hiking at one the many state parks such as Devils Hole. When summer is over, fall begins and so does football season. Even though they do not always do that great, the people of Buffalo are huge bills fans. The tailgates and games are so fun to go to. You can really see everyone coming together in support of the Bills. Besides football, you can also go pumpkin or apple picking, go through corn mazes, and visit the haunted houses such as Fright World. When fall ends, winter usually huts us really hard. The best way to get through the rough winters is to find things you like to do in the snow. I personally love to ski so that is what I do all winter. I also like to go sledding and tubing, who doesn’t. Sabers games are fun to go to if you like hockey. You also can go ice skate with your friends at the new rink located at the inner harbor! One thing you can do every season of the year in Buffalo is eat. We have AMAZING restaurants all throughout buffalo. Some of my favorites are Sea Bar, The Mulberry, The Black Iron Bistro, and Curly’s. I am definitely a die-hard Buffalo fan and I don’t plan on leaving!

     Choosing a college was one of the most stressful decisions. For me, I had no idea where I wanted to go. I only applied to SUNY schools because I knew I could not afford a private college and did not feel like burying myself in debt, especially since I need to go to graduate school where I am going to have to take out loans. Then there is also so much pressure to choose a major. Most people end up switching the major they originally picked anyways and then the school there at doesn’t even have the major they now want to do forcing them to transfer. A large majority of the people I graduated high school with ended up coming back home and going to school locally because they are not happy with the school they are at. Now personally I felt that the last half of my senior year in high school was a waste of time and could be used more efficiently. By that time I had already completed all the classes I required to graduate. I think high schools should use this time to prepare students further for college! For example, allow students to have more time to visit colleges, I only was allowed two-excused days. It would be a good idea to allow students to shadow at colleges. I went to private high school and before we chose which high school we wanted to attend we were allowed to go there and follow around a student for the whole day to see what it is like there. I know for college we have orientations and college visits but you do not really get to experience what it is like to go there. I think it would be beneficial to be able to see what it’s like to be in the different class sizes and just experience what it’s like to attend that college for one day. This time could also be used to allow students to do working internships in the field they believe they want to work in. Schools could set up programs where students shadow for a week or so and experience what it is like to work in that field. Other things that could be taught the end of senior year should be basic life skills. These life skills should include, how to change a tire, how to make basic food like roasting a chicken, how to sew, how to balance a checkbook, and other basic things. I don’t know if people learned these things at their high schools but I wasn’t. I’m just saying that our time could be better spent doing these sorts of things that will help us more when making these big life decisions.

So You’re the One That was Blasting J.Cole at 10 am???

If you couldn’t tell from my last blog, or the title of this one, I love rap music. I know that this may seem unusual coming from a white girl, but rap has always been a major part of my life. This goes way back to when I was in elementary school when I first heard Eminem’s album Encore. Ever since then, I have grown to appreciate a variety of different rappers over the years including Kanye, Drake, Schoolboy Q, Odd Future, The Roots, A$AP Ferg, and Logic. I listen to all of those guys regularly, but if I were to tell you my top three favorites they would be Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, and J.Cole. 

Another thing that is note-worthy about my life-long obsession with rap is that I go beyond just listening to it. I also enjoy reading about, writing about it, watching interviews, and most of all talking about it. Since I do like writing about it, you can expect hip hop will be a common topic for my future blogs, although I promise I will have some variety so every single one doesn’t look like a Complex article.

Besides rap, another favorite pastime of mine is playing pool. This is something I have taken up more recently and I don’t geek out over nearly as much as I do with rap. The only reason why I took it up in the first place was to have something to do when I was living in my old dorm during my freshman year. 

On the floor I lived on, we had a lounge and the only source of entertainment in that lounge was a pool table. First of all, I should say that this pool table was the nastiest, most ghetto thing I had ever seen. Its felt top was covered in stains, the balls were chipped, the cues were broken, and worst of all the table was on a lean, so all the balls would roll to one side. It was on this atrocity where I learned to play pool, and to be honest it wasn’t all that bad. In fact, I figured that if I were to learn to play well on this shitty table, then what can stop me from playing well on a good one?

I would have to say the best thing to come out of all of those games I played on Porter’s struggle table was meeting new people and also discovering how much of a great stress-reliever pool is. Whenever I would play a game, I wouldn’t think of my classes or anything else that was on my mind. All I would be thinking about is how I was going to beat my opponent, and everything else melted away for the entire twenty or thirty minute duration. It made me understand the importance of taking a small break from reality everyday.

I love that you have such a passion for things. I personally do not turn on rap when I listen to music, but when it’s on I do enjoy it. I think it’s interesting to really listen to the lyrics instead of just the beat of the song. If I were to name a rapper that I admired, like you, it would be Eminem. I feel that all of his lyrics have great content and tell interesting stories. I see rap as another form of poetry and something that really revolutionized music. I am really bad at pool so I don’t think I would be a very good component, but maybe you could teach me! I found your blog really interesting and look forward to reading more of your posts!

I grew up loving and playing the game of hockey. At first it was just something for me to do, something to keep me busy. But as I grew older the game grew on me. It started being more than just a hobby, I started treating it like a job. A job I enjoyed going to every night of the week. Every year was different, different teammates, coaches, teams, systems. It would always keep me on my toes and excited for the next day. Before I came to Buffalo State to play hockey I ended my junior career in Niagara Falls Canada. It was the first time I lived away from home on my own. I had to cook for myself, do my laundry, clean my own place. I had to learn how to be an adult very quick or I was not going to last. I eventually figure it all out and now cooking has become a past time for me every chance I get i try to cook for myself whether it be something simple or if i have the time I will try a new recipe. That last season in Niagara Falls definitely prepared me for my 4 year journey at Buffalo State. When the hockey season is all over, I switch my focus from hockey to off-season training. I always want to get better so I dedicate many hours a week to lifting and conditioning. I will still skate a couple times a week but I definitely tone it down a bunch. Other then lifting in the off-season I enjoy going golfing with buddies, kayaking and fishing. These are just hobbies to keep me busy in the summer. They also keep me relaxed and are an escape when i want to relieve some stress. The golf I do take serious at times. I play in a few tournaments every summer with some buddies. We go for fun and usually make it into some friendly competition between the group of us. But when its all said and done I can not wait to get back on the ice with my teammates and get the season going. Hockey is not just a hobby it is a lifestyle.

It is great that you have found something in life that you love so much. My brother was a huge hockey player and I always used to love going to his games to watch. I used to be a serious cross country runner but injured my knees and cannot run anymore. Like you, I always found it a great way to release stress. I like the way you keep busy during the summer; I too love to go kayaking! That is great that you learned to cook and enjoy it. It is also cool that you like to try new recipes. I do that sometimes but they don’t always come out that great. Good luck with all that you do!

     My life was a little unconventional growing up. Before settling down in Buffalo New York, my parents traveled the world cooking at high-end restaurants and hotels, making various connections as they went. They came home when my grandpa became sick and took over the family restaurant. A couple years later they had three children, my brother, sister, and myself. Even though they had settled down, my parents never lost the urge to travel so my aunt and a nanny watched me a lot of my life. While traveling my parents did things like cooking lessons around the world and cooked at the Grammys. The connections my parents made while traveling and doing these events opened many doors for me that I am extremely grateful for. A couple years ago my entire family went to Spain and stayed with one of their very good friends, making far away trips a more feasible thing with a family of five. Having friends in various countries is a great way to go see the world

    Another thing my Mom enjoys doing are health missions in third world countries; she is a strong believer in giving back. In order to instill this virtue in my brother, sister, and I, she brought each one of us on a health mission when we turned twelve. I went to Dominican Republic with a group of doctors where we traveled to different bateys (small villages). There we provided people with free dental work, common medical work, and veterinary work. On lunch breaks we would walk around the batays. Some people would allow us look in their homes, which were sheds with tin roofing and dirt floors. Despite the lack of running water everyone and everything was very clean. The toys the kids played with included sticks and tires that they would push around, and the occasional ball. This trip really made me appreciate what I had at home and taught me to not take advantage of what I had. It also helped me realize what I wanted to do for my profession. Since my trip in seventh grade I have participated in four more health missions and plan on continuing going when I have more free time. I also try to do local volunteer work in my own community like volunteering at soup kitchens and the Ronald McDonald house.

     Currently I am a sophomore hoping to go to medical school. I put a lot of my time into school and hope that one day it will pay off. I believe that everything in life happens for a reason, even the bad things like my parents divorce or the death of a family member. All of the things I have encountered in life have helped me to grow and see things differently then I once did. I look forward to the future.

Wow, you sure have lived an interesting life so far. I can only imagine how hard it was on you with your parents being gone a lot of the time, but it seems like their adventures have opened doors for you. I want to go somewhere in Europe one day especially since I know basic Spanish and German. I think it would be interesting to see how people lie differently form us. I like that you volunteer. I used to be a Boy Scout and have done a lot of volunteer work in the community so I know the hard work and effort that you’ve put in. I know you said you want to go to medical school. Is this just to be a doctor or is there a specific path you want to follow? This was very interesting to read and I think you should keep writing like this.

What I find most interesting in life is people. The people in our life who impact us in a way that we can never forget them. That is what I try to be in life. Someone who you are excited to meet and talk to again. We meet A LOT of people in our life, but what will you be remembered by? Family and friends besides lacrosse is what brings me the most joy in life. What I have noticed the most about happiness is that it is very hard for me personally to be happy without people I love around me. Yes, lacrosse brings me so much happiness, but would I enjoy myself as much if all my friends didn’t play it with me? In high school, I played on a travel hockey team and what I learned is that it is very hard to have fun and enjoy yourself when you don’t enjoy the people around you. So although my life is surrounded by always being in healthy physical and mental shape, I don’t think that I would survive life if I didn’t have my loved ones around me. People is what I love. Separate from people, lacrosse is my life. I live it every single day whether I’m playing with my stick or going for a run. I have played in countless number of games since I was three years old, when my father put a stick in my hands. I play for Buffalo State currently and was supposed to go to Scotland for a world tournament. Due to passport issues, unfortunately we were unable to attend the tournament. Other than that, my goal as a sophomore at Buff State, I plan to become an All American. I believe I can do it and will do anything to complete this goal. Being a Native American, I play for the Creator and all of my ancestors. With that being said, becoming an All American isn’t important so long I am playing for the Creator.

I love your view on life. I agree with you, it is very important to have great people around you that you love in order to live life to the fullest. I know I am always my happiest when I am with the people I love and enjoy being with. From what I know about you so far from class and your blog, you are a very kind and happy person and seem like you would be a great friend. You have amazing goals in life and seem very determined to achieve them, which is great. The world would be a better place is everyone walked around with your mindset! The difference between High school and college

Its crazy to think that I am over a year out of school. Everything is happening so fast. Its as if my life is flashing before my eyes. Things here in college is a lot different from back in high school. The one big difference that I notice is the independence. I no longer have people climbing all over my back, telling me to do things. I must get everything done on my own. I dont have my parents with me pushing or forcing me to get my work done. coming to college, I had to learn how to use my time management wisely. I had to learn how to use this not only because of education but also because of the fact that I am a student athlete. last year as a freshman here at Buffalo State I had a hard time managing my time but now that I have experience I am a lot better at it. Anther huge difference between high school and college is the teachers/professors. Teachers in high school were a lot more strict. It was their way or the highway. things had to get done in a certain manner or order, and I felt that You had to learn in a certain way in high school that some students may not be accustomed to. In college the teachers are a lot more open minded when it come to situations of that nature. I feel like in college, you are free to learn in whichever way you choose. teachers in college allow their students to be a lot more free in many ways. most college teachers wont be hard on you because you are expected to get the work done. they understand that we are all young adults and that there should be no excuses as to why work is not being done. In High school I feel that everything is handed to you. People guide you to success your success. In college that is the complete opposite. you must go out get get everything on your own. you wont have an academic  adviser hounding over you telling you to keep up with certain things. Everything must be done independently. In high school I was fortunate enough to have football coaches and teachers care about me enough to do what ever it takes for me to pass and move on. In college our not going to have a teacher follow your every step. That is what I have learned over the course of my time here at Buffalo state college.

I feel like my life is flashing by too. My best friend is a grade behind me, and she’s leaving for college later this week, which completely blows my mind because it seems like a month ago we were both in high school. In addition to that, I can see where you’re coming from with the stark contrast between high school and college. The difference in academics is what stands out the most. When I first started school here, I had mixed feelings about the professors. What I did like was that they didn’t constantly breathe down my neck or treat me like a little kid. However, I found the indifferent attitude some professors had, like it didn’t matter to them if anyone passed or failed, to be a bit unnerving, because it meant that if I failed, it was all on me. Anyway, great post you brought up some valid points.

As we get older time does seem to go by much faster. We all thought that the four years of high school went by fast; college is going to go by even faster. I definitely agree with you on your view of high school compared to college in reference to how the teachers/professors treat us. I too had to learn how to manage my time more efficiently. When I was in high school my teachers were very accommodating to the students and pushed students much harder. Like you said, college is different. It is expected by the professors that the students want to learn and will put in their time to be successful. Good luck and have fun through your four years of college!

     My life was a little unconventional growing up. Before settling down in Buffalo New York, my parents traveled the world cooking at high-end restaurants and hotels, making various connections as they went. They came home when my grandpa became sick and took over the family restaurant. A couple years later they had three children, my brother, sister, and myself. Even though they had settled down, my parents never lost the urge to travel so my aunt and a nanny watched me a lot of my life. While traveling my parents did things like cooking lessons around the world and cooked at the Grammys. The connections my parents made while traveling and doing these events opened many doors for me that I am extremely grateful for. A couple years ago my entire family went to Spain and stayed with one of their very good friends, making far away trips a more feasible thing with a family of five. Having friends in various countries is a great way to go see the world

    Another thing my Mom enjoys doing are health missions in third world countries; she is a strong believer in giving back. In order to instill this virtue in my brother, sister, and I, she brought each one of us on a health mission when we turned twelve. I went to Dominican Republic with a group of doctors where we traveled to different bateys (small villages). There we provided people with free dental work, common medical work, and veterinary work. On lunch breaks we would walk around the batays. Some people would allow us look in their homes, which were sheds with tin roofing and dirt floors. Despite the lack of running water everyone and everything was very clean. The toys the kids played with included sticks and tires that they would push around, and the occasional ball. This trip really made me appreciate what I had at home and taught me to not take advantage of what I had. It also helped me realize what I wanted to do for my profession. Since my trip in seventh grade I have participated in four more health missions and plan on continuing going when I have more free time. I also try to do local volunteer work in my own community like volunteering at soup kitchens and the Ronald McDonald house.

     Currently I am a sophomore hoping to go to medical school. I put a lot of my time into school and hope that one day it will pay off. I believe that everything in life happens for a reason, even the bad things like my parents divorce or the death of a family member. All of the things I have encountered in life have helped me to grow and see things differently then I once did. I look forward to the future.
