#SUCCESS: The Senate has finally passed a stalled anti-human trafficking bill that will increase penalties for perpetrators and support for survivors!
While we were hopeful the Senate would also pass the Runaway and Homeless Youth and Trafficking Prevention Act, this legislation is a step in the right direction.

After reading this article, I found myself debating whether or not the proposal of OTC birth control was in the best interest for women - my decision, yes. The first reason for my conclusion is perhaps the most obvious, it greatly reduces the amount of unwanted pregnancies; this means a significant reduction in abortions, or needing to take the “abortion pill”, Plan B, etc. A lot less women will feel the physical as well as emotional repercussions of having to make this decision - decisions and consequences that male politicans will never have the issue of facing. My second reason as to why I think policies should be implemented to provide OTC birth control to women is because, although perhaps less extreme, it is used as the female version of a condom. If birth control were a much more accessible and less expensive item to get, like condoms, there would be a lot less controversy over the use of contraceptive pills. Personally, it still feels as though this is another example of subconscious sexism against women in that we can often feel ashamed or embarrassed going to the pharmacy to pick up our birth control, whereas men can freely purchase a pack of condoms and be on their way. My final reason relates a lot to what was articulated in the end of the article in that it appears that Congress, mainly Republicans, are using this issue as something that is purely political. Women’s reproductive rights should not be in the hands of male politicians whose religious and ideological beliefs determine the fate of others, especially in regards to pregnancy. We have come so far when it comes to gay marriage, and other issues that have called for more open-mindedness from politicians, why are we still toying with this issue and putting it on the back burner as if it has no real significance to thousands of women?

But as the issue of campus rape has gained attention, proponents of guns on campus increasingly use the sexual assault issue to support their arguments. Meanwhile, advocates against sexual violence have united to push back, saying arming potential victims isn't realistic in the vast majority of assaults against students.

I think this article brings up a lot of interesting points about how we should prevent on campus rape from occuring. We are in a dilemma that now presents the student body, along with the administration, as to whether or not we see gun prevention as a safety precaution or an issue that could lead to an increase in potential rape that takes place on campus. Personally, I do not think that allowing students to carry weapons on campus is the best step in combatting this violence against women, and that instead, we need to focus on altering the mindset of not only the student body, but everyone world wide in believing that rape is acceptable. Resorting to this allowance of letting students carry weapons to protect themselves means that we are not only enabling potential perpetrators to continue having this mindset, but we are also making campuses a much more uneasy place - a place that is no longer focused on expanding the minds of students, but more like a “Wild West”/”every man for themselves” type atmosphere.

This post is a little different from what I normally blog about, but it goes along with the idea of female empowerment and the transition from how women perceive themselves based on the media to female beauty in reality. Kudos to Aerie for starting this idea of keeping photos of their models untouched and not feeding into the media’s idea of beauty being skin and bones.
Arkansas Governor Signs Domestic Violence Bill Dubbed 'Laura's Law' (Melissa Jeltsen)

Violence towards women is not limited to the outside world, but more often than not, an issue that takes place behind closed doors. The issue of domestic violence is one that has taken place for decades, and has cost the lives of many young women, mothers, sisters, etc. Recently, however, in Arkansas, Governor Asa Hutchinson signed into law a bill titled “Laura’s Law” mandating that police officers use a standardized test when dealing with victims of domestic violence so as to assess the level of danger they are being subject to. Not only will this provide them with a better understanding of the victim’s situations, but it provides the victim a chance to seek help in a situation which can often seem inescapable. I think these adjustments to the way in which police officers handle certain situations is extremely helpful and provides a far more case by case approach instead of meshing every issue into one category.
The legislation would increase funding for the rehabilitation of sex trafficking victims. However, there is controversy because of the inclusion of the Hyde Amendment, stating that funds cannot be used for most abortions. To put pressure on the Senate to pass the bill, Majority Leader Mitch...
"I know there are some Democrats who care deeply about the victims of human trafficking. Unfortunately, not everybody does, otherwise we wouldn't be having this obstruction," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the bill's author. "I hope they will examine their conscience."

Although NOW covers a number of women’s issues, the two that struck me the most when I was looking over their website were their stances on reproductive rights as well as changing the negative perspectives women have regarding themselves because of the media. Their efforts take shape through social media platforms, ralleys, platforms, etc.
A couple of weeks ago, I sat down to eat dinner with my family as we usually do - flipping back and forth between local news stations, listening to the weather, maybe catching the end of Jeopardy. However, that night I was able to catch a few minutes of the Rachel Maddow show, and listened intently to something that struck me as utterly absurd. If you fast forward through the half hour video to the second portion of Maddow’s report, you will watch this appalling report on Loretta Lynch, a woman who’s nomination for Attorney General has been under consideration for 138 days (this being dated 3/16/15). I won’t spoil the clip for those interested in watching it, but I will say that if it wasn’t obvious that politics was full of racial as well as gender bias before, it will most certainly become clear now.

Although the majority of my posts are focused on human trafficking issues, I find that women are facing both societal as well as economic issues within U.S. borders. In order to combat these gender biased barriers, it is crucial that we first identify the areas under which women are attacked. The AAUW is an organization that not only identifies these barriers for women, but they also work towards educating people on them as well as uniting people in the fight against them. As one can see from the website linked above, the AAUW works in all areas ranging from education to economic security and even to women's most basic civil rights.
I found this page really interesting in identifying who the majority of victims were that enter into the human trafficking system. I found it shocking that those in the LGBT community are often more susceptible in becomming a victim of this type of trade largely because they are not allowed or feel welcome to live at home with their family members, leaving them to find refuge in others - often leading to violent and dangerous circumstances.
