i was driving to my hockey game, minding my own business when someone in a car in front of me sticks her whole arm out of the window to wave. I thought it must be for someone else, then I started worrying that they were trying to signal me that I needed to let them over, then I remembered that i used to teach high school and this is what high schoolers do so I waved back. The waving stopped and, due to a stop light, we were a little spread out, but I desperately needed to know who was doing the aggressive waving. I tried to catch back up with them (there are multiple paths to get to the rink, luckily). It barely worked, and as I passed them at a second light that I *HAD* to turn at, the arm stuck out again so I half-waved as I turned. I couldn't make out who it was but I could see that there were at least 2 additional girls in the backseat and they were all giggling. so I guess my two years of teaching were not for nothing

They thing about women’s sports is that I think most of us who watch them want a future of all gender sports leagues but unless you have a way to make misogyny go away in the next week and cis men to actually, meaningfully allow other genders to compete with them and share resources without harassment, women’s leagues going away would just mean women do not play sports anymore (or, play it in secret unsanctioned events like it used to be.) And the biggest thing you can do is 1) fight against the idea that these spaces should only be for certain kinds of women (cis women, white women, upper class women, etc) and refocus / realign these spaces to be for anyone experiencing gender marginalization who is denied access to traditional sporting spaces 2) invest enough resources into these athletes until they’re just too good to deny the most predominant spaces in sports that men occupy

The thing that annoys me is way too many people, including other people on the left, is acting as if women’s sports came about because some women went up to their college admin like “we want to play basketball but we’re too scared to play with the boys :(“ instead of it mainly being clubs and teams of women who suffered nonstop harassment playing on boys clubs and were refused playin time or resources or were literally barred from competing and had to do it in secret / after hours / etc and were mainly asking for a place to just safely play and work on their craft and saying if you won’t let us in, we’ll create our own. There are obviously some women athletes right now pushing bullshit narratives and getting in on the grift of “well we need this because we’re weaker we know we’re not as good as the boys~” but there’s a lot more that understand these places exist because begging cis men for scraps in their spaces wasn’t working so they created their own

Obviously OBVIOUSLY this is not anywhere near the level we are talking about here but I think it is a perfect illustration of what you are talking about.

At the collegiate level, all bowling teams are by default co-ed. But at my school the women who were selected to make the travel team by the coach, were constantly harassed by their teammates and were never allowed to actually bowl during competition. Because of this, out of a desire to be allowed to competitively bowl during their collegiate careers, we elected to create a separate women's team. It is worth mentioning that as a result of breaking off from the larger now "men's" team we had fewer resources, had to compete for practice time, and still faced bullying (including a letter from our former teammates calling us and "embarrassment" to the sport") and the eventual theft of all of our gear.

All of us "women" (and I use this term loosely) would have preferred to bowl on an equitable co-ed team but were bullied and prevented from competing in our sport and were forced to create a separate team in order to be allowed to compete.

my friend defended his PhD today and I am Very Normal about it and didn't cry at all when he got to the acknowledgements and said, "first I want to thank this university" and put up the slide that had a picture of him from his first semester as a freshman undergrad on campus next to one of him now

gotta say it was strange for my mom to send me pictures of me playing hockey as someone who has seen lots of hockey pictures and spent too much time identifying players off of half of a blurry arm. At first I was like 'yeah duh, that's me' and then I saw a different angle that had my back and after examining my posture and the play etc, I saw my (blurry) name and thought 'wait, that player has my last name' NO SHIT SHERLOCK

sometimes the argument that you should have had to play a competitive sport for 1 season in high school before you comment on "hockey culture" rings so true because what do you mean I just saw someone seriously argue that the systemic hazing of talented 16 year olds by undrafted 20 year olds is better than putting lots of highly talented 16 year olds together and have them push each other because then "the coaches are doing the hazing." Idk, maybe if it is not unreasonable that I will be drafted into a pro sport in 2 years then getting pressure put on me by my coach (even if it occasionally goes too far) is better than the risk of dying by alcohol poisoning wtf

Played ok defense tonight in my adult hockey league. Bought groceries, including my favorite cheap doughnuts (8 assorted for $2.99!!). Turns out my favorite flavor (! sour cream) was in there and I ate it in bed. Tomorrow should be my first day of a retreat that all the faculty have to go on before school starts - but I quit that awful job and don't have to go. Truly does life get better than this

how am i supposed to write my thesis when i struggle to get out of bed. i am having nightmares about my advisor. i do think i can do this but the anxiety hurts so bad like just opening the document raises my heart rate physically and i just want to die. i literally do not know if i can finish this i just want it to be over. i want to move on with the rest of my life. we are at the point of the year where I am like 'maybe teaching wasn't so bad' even though i actively hated my life while there but now i'm like 'it's just cause of the pressure of the thesis hanging over your head the whole time' NO it fucking wasn't the entire reason i hated it. i just want a job that is adequate and pays me and makes me NOT want to rip my skin off and makes me not contemplate my mortality (not to mention morality) every hour. i want God to just tell me if I should even bother caring about applying for a PhD program or if He wants me to just. find a job. i wish i did not have this pressure from my parents and friends to work for NASA or Lockheed or something I just want to hunker down in this podunk town and never leave and honestly just go to work come back and go rowing/to hockey/be moderately miserable every day until I get to go home
