Using the Expression んです

んです(n desu) is a colloquial expression used when stating a reason or when asking for explanation. The plain form of verbs is used before んです. 

You can ask for reason or explanation without using んですbut using it emphasizes your desire for an answer. 

1.) どうして日本へ行くんですか。(doushite nihon e iku n desu ka.) -> Why do you go to Japan? 

2.) 日本語を勉強するんです。(nihongo o benkyousuru n desu.) -> Because  I will study Japanese. 

3.)どうして大学へ来なかったんですか。(doushite daigaku e kinakatta n desu  ka.) -> Why didn’t you come to University?

4.) アメリカから友達が来たんです。(amerika kara tomodachi ga kita n desu.) -> Because my friends came from America.
