She sets her down on the lid of the toilet. She turns the tub on and adds some bubble bath and bath salts for a relaxing soak, then strips down, she places some folded up towels next to the tub, and steps in. She sits down and opens her arms. Once Se-mi strips and gets in, Hayden wraps her arms around her and pulls her close. She rests her chin on her shoulder and smiles, "This is perfect."

She adds conditioner and massages it before letting it sit in her hair for a little bit. After a bit she rinses her hair. She then smiles "You are now all clean, so just focus on relaxing" she hugs her tighter, she would wash herself after Se-mi got out, but for now the focus was just cuddling. “semi,” his voice breaks. “noona.” there’s no need to call her that, is there? she’d told him otherwise, let him in on the secret of her age that the remainder of their team hadn’t been granted. but he does anyway, finds comfort in sharing that with her. who else would he call such a thing in a place like this? “no, i’m not — i’m not leaving you.” minsu steps forward shakily, takes her wrist into his hold. trembling fingers brush warily against her skin, as if he has to convince himself that she’s really there, not about to dissolve in front of his eyes. “i’ll protect you, semi…”

She told him not to call her that, swatted at his shoulder with a teasing scoff the first time he did, but hearing it now, cracked and trembling in his throat like a lifeline, it feels different. Sacred. Like the last piece of something real in this nightmare. Her breath catches the moment his hand wraps around her wrist. It’s warm. Desperate. Real. And it makes everything harder. She doesn't pull away. Not yet. ❝Minsu…❞ His name falls from her lips like a sigh, like a wound reopening. Her gaze drops to where his hand clings to hers, as if letting go would mean losing her for good.

❝You’re supposed to survive this. Do not carry dead weight.❞ She tries to make her voice firm, but it falters halfway. Because part of her wants this. Wants someone to say she’s worth saving. Even now. Her fingers twitch, almost curling around his, but stop short. ❝You don’t protect people in here, Minsu. You bury them. You either keep going or you watch them fall. That’s how this game works.❞ But even as she says it, her other hand reaches up, brushing his cheek so gently it contradicts every word. ❝You think you can protect me? Her hand shifts from his cheek to the back of his neck, fingers curling there with a tenderness that belies everything around them, blood, death, fear. Even die with me.❞ She pulls him in closer, nose brushing his, her voice so soft it barely exists. ❝Then don’t die for me, Minsu. Live with me. Somehow. Even if it means running. Even if it means breaking every rule. Just… stay.❞ And this time, when she kisses him again, it’s not a goodbye. It’s a beginning.

it takes a few moments for minsu to allow himself to feel the moment; semi’s enticing warmth that practically swallows all trace of cold that had previously enveloped him. he leans into her, hands hovering by her sides. wants to touch her, but is far too scared that he might harm her with even the slightest graze of his skin against hers, like she’s made of fine china. and just like that, she kisses him. he’s frozen for a second, convinced he’s stumbled into the kind of dream he’s about to be roused awake from. then, slowly, he returns it, movements slow and careful against her lips, still cautious anything else might break her. when they part, he releases a breath, soft and shaky, barely there. “anything,” minsu confirms. “i’ll stay with you. no matter what.” another kiss. this one he’s a little more prepared for, and eases beneath. he shakily cups her cheek for a moment, until the sound of heavy footsteps nearby draws him from the moment. “we have to move.”

For a moment, it felt like she could believe it too. But the illusion shatters the second she hears it, Shoes. Sharp. Heavy. Close. She stiffens instantly, eyes snapping open just as Minsu cups her cheek. Her hand darts up, wrapping around his wrist, steady but urgent. Not to pull away, but to pull him with her. ❝You're right.❞ Her voice is quiet but sharp, stripped clean of hesitation now. She pulls back just enough to look him in the eyes, still close, still tethered to him by breath, by feeling. ❝We run. Together. No splitting up. No hero bullshit. It’s there, plain as day, coiling in the tremble of his fingers, the way his voice catches, the quiet breathlessness clinging to every word. And yet… he stays. He chooses her. Still. When he shifts to shield her, Se-mi’s breath hitches. It’s instinct, raw and selfless, and it nearly breaks her. ❝You idiot,❞ she whispers, though her voice is laced with something dangerously close to affection. She squeezes his hand back tightly, like a grounding wire. Like a promise that neither of them will be the first to let go.

He says “deal,” and it lands like something sacred. Her lips curl into the faintest smile, small, tired, but real. Then they’re moving. Fast, quiet, pressed together like the space between their bodies is the only safe place left in the world. Her voice was calm, but it carried something deeper. Something that clung to the air like smoke after fire. “You didn’t protect me, Minsu.” She wasn’t angry. There was no blame in her eyes, just something heartbreakingly gentle. She tilted her head slightly, watching him with that same look she used to give when he forgot to not call her nonna anymore. “I was right there… and you didn’t come.” Her voice trembled for just a moment before she smiled. That soft, familiar smile that always felt like home, like warm soup on cold days and whispered jokes under blankets. “But you’re sorry. I know you are.” She stepped forward, not touching him, just close enough to make him feel like she still could. “It’s okay.” A pause.

“i know.” minsu whispers. it’s all that’s been in his mind since the moment her last breath, since whichever pierce of her skin had finally robbed her of the last traces of her life. they echoed viciously in his mind. he’d do anything to be rid of them. she’s not there, not real. it’s exhaustion and looming affects of those fucking pills and god knows what else teaming up on him to visualise the guilt he deserves to see. but he wants her to be. needs her to be. “it’s not okay!” his voice grows louder, frustrated, tears distorting the already-warped view of her. “i can’t — i don’t want to protect anyone else. i should have protected you. i — i don’t want to live with myself. take me with you. i want to be with you.”

But her eyes shimmered now. Her hand hovered over his chest like she wanted to take the pain out of him, but her fingers never made it there. Couldn’t. “Minsu…” she whispered, and there was no anger in it. Just a grief so gentle it hurt more than any scream ever could. “If you come with me… who’s going to remember me?” Her voice cracked at the edges. “Who’s going to say my name like you do? Who’s going to laugh at the dumb stuff I said? Who’s going to make sure I wasn’t just another number in a game that killed too many of us?”

She stepped back a little, her image flickering slightly, fragile now, like he might lose her again if he blinked too hard. “You’re the only part of me still left in the world, Minsu.” Her lips trembled with a sad smile. “If you go too… then I’m really gone.” She looked down at his hands, so tightly clenched like he was trying to hold on to a life he no longer wanted. Her voice dropped, almost pleading. “You don’t have to be okay. You don’t have to forgive yourself yet.” Her gaze found his again, clear, unwavering. “But you have to stay. You have to live.” She blinked slowly, as if she already knew he might not listen, but she had to say it anyway. “Please. For me, just stay one more day.” Her voice was barely a breath. “And then another.” “And then another.”

“But I can’t be real again. No matter how much we want it.” She took a shaky breath. It sounded like one she shouldn’t even be able to take. “You’re not living right now, Minsu. You’re... surviving the absence of me. But that’s not the same.” And then her voice turned softer, almost like it used to be when they’d stay up whispering in the dark, trying to drown out the horrors of the game. “You need help. Real help. And I know you think you don’t deserve it, but you do. You deserve to live. Even if I’m not there. Even if it takes time. Even if you think you’ll never feel whole again.” She finally let her hand hover again, inches from his cheek this time, aching to touch, to reassure, to stay. “You don’t have to let go of me.” A beat. “Just don’t let me be the reason you stop holding onto yourself.” Her form shimmered, the edges flickering like the last seconds of a dream before waking. minsu feels his lower lip tremble, and it’s then that he’s aware how pathetic he probably looks in the moment. much like he did on the moment that he’d failed semi. cowered on a bunk and pressed his hands over his ears in an effort to drown out her screams, her final breaths. he’s aware of the darkness that swallows the sleeping quarters now. there’s only a handful of players left. he could win. but he doesn’t want to. he can’t. his hands rise to his face, and he breathes a shaky sob into the palms of his hands, shaking his head. “no,” minsu cries. “no, no, no, no… semi!” he pleads. the moment is ending, she’s on the verge of leaving, and her abscence has never felt so heavy on his chest. he reaches for her, practically stumbles over his own feet in an effort to catch up with her. when did he end up on his knees? “there has to be — has to be something. anything! i-i’ll do anything to have you back… if there isn’t, just… just please let me die as well.”

Her chest ached, impossibly, painfully, as if his sorrow could still reach her across whatever line now separated them. His voice, ragged and pleading, cut through the silence like a knife, and the sound of her name on his lips made her want to cry with him. But she didn’t leave. She didn’t vanish. Instead, she sank down to the floor with him, slow and steady, like she wasn’t going anywhere. “I’m not going.” Her voice was quiet, but firm, more real than a hallucination had any right to be. “I’m still here.” She reached out, not to touch him, but to be near. Her hand hovered inches from his own, the same way it had by his chest. Close enough to feel, but never enough to hold. “You don’t need to do anything to earn me back. She couldn’t touch him, couldn’t wipe his tears or wrap her arms around him like he so clearly needed. But even still, she stayed. Because some part of her was real. Maybe not flesh, not bone… but memory. Love. The echo of a girl who had once been so fiercely alive. She watched him fall inward, watched him collapse under the unbearable weight of guilt and grief, and if she could’ve cried for him, she would have. Her own voice trembled as she knelt a little closer, as if the closeness could be enough. “You’re right,” she whispered. “I’m not really here.” Her eyes never left him. “But you are.”

That matters.” She glanced at his hands covering his face, and her fingers hovered above them, just barely. “I don’t want you to survive out of guilt.” “I want you to live out of love.” She stayed kneeling beside him, quiet but present. Not vanishing. Not fading. “You don’t have to believe in me, Minsu. But maybe… just for tonight, you can let yourself believe that I’m here. Not to forgive. Not to forget.” Her voice caught. “But just to sit beside you in this.” She settled in, watching him break, refusing to look away. “I’m not going anywhere. Not yet.” And she didn’t.

he isn’t sure how long he’s spent like this; a weeping mess crumpled upon the floor like a piece of discarded litter. surely one of the other finalists will pity him enough to finish him off in one way or another if he remains like this. minsu hiccups around a trembling sob, words beyond him. there’s plenty more he could say to semi, or the illusion of her, but none of it manages to break through the surface of choked cries. shaking hands still stay by his face, shielding him from the harsh reality, the possibility that when he looks again, she might be gone, nothing but a whisper echoing off of the tall walls of the sleeping quarters. he remains there, listening to her, curled in on himself, trying to trick himself into feeling some trace of warmth from her, until his tears eventually nurse him into a light sleep full of dreams of semi.

Se-mi didn’t speak again. She didn’t need to. She watched him crumble, watched the weight of everything he was trying to carry finally smother him into exhaustion. Her presence stayed, soft and still, as he cried himself down into that fragile space between waking and sleep. She stayed as he hiccuped and folded in on himself like he wanted to disappear into the floor. And when his sobs turned to silence, when the shaking in his hands slowed and his breath began to even out, she leaned in closer. She didn’t vanish. Not yet. Her voice, when it finally came again, was barely more than a whisper. A lullaby made of memory and love. “I’m here.” A pause. The faintest smile. “Sleep, Minsu. I’ll be here when you wake up.”

And as the cold air of the sleeping quarters crept in around his small, curled body, something stayed warm inside his dreams. A trace of her laughter. A flash of her smile. The sound of her humming some off-key tune she used to sing under her breath just to make him roll his eyes and grin. In that quiet pocket of sleep, broken, imperfect, and full of grief, he had her again. Not fully. Not really. But just enough to rest.

"How can you be so smart yet so dumb at the same time?" These words didn't bother Hayden one bit, she actually just laughed it off before responding "I could say the same to you...honestly. We are both dumb as shit but still so smart. Smartest people that exist. I promise you that" she wraps her arm around her friend. "Two of a kind. No one else can match our greatness. Don't you think?" she places her cigarette between her lips and then ruffles her friend's hair before taking a long drag of her cigarette. She blows the smoke out slowly before letting go of her. "I like to think how I'm both a genius and yet so stupid is part of my charm....what do you think?"

She takes the dishes to the sink and then returns to Se-mi. She pulls the girl close and kisses her neck. "I love being full of soup and cheese and cuddling my adorable best friend who's also my girlfriend. This is the life," she kisses up her neck and then nibbles on her ear before burying her face in her neck and just cuddling her tight.

Her hands found Hayden’s waist and held her close, fingertips gently trailing along the curve of her back. “Mmm… god, you really are wife material,” she murmured, voice low and teasing, but laced with genuine warmth. “If I wasn’t already obsessed with you, this soup-and-neck-kisses combo would’ve sealed it.” She turned her head just enough to brush her lips over Hayden’s ear, whispering, “You spoil me, you know that?” before giving it a soft bite in return. “Like… full-on domestic goddess. All that’s missing is the matching pajamas and a ring.” Then she pulled her even closer, arms wrapping around her like she never wanted to let go. “This right here? This is dangerous. Because I could stay like this forever,” she whispered against her skin, letting her lips linger there. “And the more you do this… the more I start planning our honeymoon in my head.”
