Thanks to John Dickinson for helping figure out how to make this a little better (using subdivision modeling/quads of course. If you don't mind n-gons in your 3d model, it's unnecessary).

Finally installed DEX Discrete Particles for Modo (had to troubleshoot a bit but the FAQ solved it).

Looks very interesting. The "Manual" is inside the tutorial files in schematic view.
