Orientation
3D Printing is becoming very popular. That is good for the novice printer to get information and how to’s on the best practices in the art of 3D Printing. One of the things I would like to point out is the print orientation of objects.
There are many programs for slicing the CAD files to make them printable. Some are open source others are closed. No matter what program you are using, you still have to set the object you want to print on the print bed surface. Where the object is placed and how it is placed depends many factors, first is how much support will be used?
Second is which is the top and which is the sides? Each 3D Printer prints a bit differently. Some leave noticeable lines, while others make smooth prints, but one thing is the same- the surface facing the print bed and the top if the machine will have lines through out. There is no stopping that, but there is a way to decide which side gets those lines. Post processing helps but orientation is a great tool.
You can just load the file and slice, then print or you can put some thought into how the object will be placed on the bed and then slice and print. I always ask my customers which is the top and bottom of prints and what side will not be seen or used much, that way I can decide how to place the object. There are times when orientation won’t help at all, for those times we use acetone baths and XTC-3D coatings to remove the lines. Though with XTC, it makes the prints shiny with a hard coat, if you do one side it is best to do them all.
Once you start 3D Printing you will understand exactly what i am talking about. Always make sure you find the best possible way to print your files and make matter out of ones and zeros.
As you can see below, there was no good orientation for this 30 mm connector part but you can see the print on the left side of the pics was standing up, while the other was laying on its side.

Zortrax M200 3D Printer
Article--Very good read. I knew Zortrax was good but I never thought to think of how many they sell and how much they make. I am in the wrong business....lol
Material Testing
We have been doing some experiments with different materials on our Zortrax M200 printer.
While the Zortrax 3D printer offered excellent quality prints, it is a closed software printer, meaning the software and firmware is not open source like mostly all the 3D Printers on the market today. That is why the prints are so great.
With the addition of Z-Temp on the market, which can adjust the temperature and remove the heat from the printing bed so as to print PLA and not just ABS materials. We have printed with Colorfabb Bronzefill- still perfecting that one, Taulman Nylon Bridge, Taulman T-Glass, Proto-Pasta High Temp PLA, and Proto-Pasta Polycarbonate.
Zortrax will becoming out with Z-Wood, Z-Flex, Z-Metal sometime in the future. They are in the testing phase of these materials and we are anxious for them to be released. Unlike the third party filaments, Z filaments will have the quality we come to expect from the M200.
I would post pictures of our test prints but they are proprietary. I will be adding pictures to our gallery as soon as we get them and are approved to be released to the public.
3DZPrinting doesn’t carry these special materials in stock but when order it only takes a few days to receive them from the manufacturer.
We are still working on making The Lyman Extruder to produce our own special Polycarbonate filament. When that happens we will be offering a design that has never before been seen, which we think will go over with flying colors.
If anyone has a request for a material, please let us know and we will test it to see if it is compatible with the Zortrax M200.
Zortrax is Designing new Colors!
Hopefully soon we will be offering a new Skin color ZULTRAT for doll makers. Not sure when the release is but I would venture to say it will be sometime this year. Keep tuned and be in of the first to 3D Print your own Doll Design!
The pictures below were Printed with the Prototype Skin color by Zortrax themselves at 90 microns and the Head is 2-3 cm as a test for a customer.
Excellent quality, and we can't wait until the new material is released!

We Love Volcanos!
Volcanoes are a natural wonder to the world and provide a spectral visual display. They also are essential to the Earths survival. I believe that when all life is gone on the Earth and the volcanoes take over, there will be a new landscape with no trace of human kind as the lava would have absorbed everything and transformed it into rocks. Too bad scientists can't decide that using a volcano for human waste would be beneficial to the environment as I believe it would incinerate and transform the garbage with very little environmental exhaust from the enormous heat that they are made of.
Here is a great video on and article from Taylor Hill. Volcano Drone
