Hi! My name is Carly Smith and I am an After school Program Director in the city of Everett, MA. Our goal in after school programs is to align our activities with the curriculum of the school day. Mathematics can be a challenge for after school programs. :::Mathematical Practice Standards::

  This site is for the educators that may need refreshing, renewing, and reinforcing of their math skills before stepping into the teacher role during after school hours.  It is very important that out of school time educators know and understand the HOW and WHY's behind learning and developing new mathematical concepts (especially in older grades).  We have all been there, when we see that 6th grade students homework and immediately pull the old "ask HER, she's good at this!" maneuver. This site is helpful for the teachers, during their prep period to acquaint themselves with the Standards for Mathematical Practice, a.k.a., what the students need to demonstrate cognitively in order to become mathematically proficient.  If we don't know these practices as educators, then we cannot be intentional with our out of school time practice. 

This site is for teachers of middle and high school students. It includes an illustration for each Standard of Mathematical Practice that students must utilize to be an effective problem solver.  It also includes a student dialoge that helps the educator envision the potential classroom questions students may be asking.  There are also teacher reflection question to use with your students on a daily basis to help reinforce these skills, as well as overviews of each standard and suggested materials for implementation in the after school programs.

:::MATH MEDIA- VIDEOS & LESSON PLANS:::

  Let me state this simply: everything you need! PBS Teachers has always been a phenomenal resource and it again proves to be brilliant when it comes to Math education for all grade levels (k-12).

 The site offers fantastic video clips of an online series called "Cyberchase!" that out of school time educators can play anytime the internet is available! I also like Cyberchase because each character is as diverse as the students we work with.

EXAMPLE:: Here is one example of objectives and standards for a Calculating Elapsed Time lesson for students in grades 3-5:

Students learn to figure out elapsed time by counting, subtracting and regrouping in base 60. This activity is motivated by a Cyberchase episode in which Digit and Hacker compete in a cooking contest.

Measurement and Data   3.MD- Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects.

1. Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.

::CROSS CURRICULAR MATH LESSONS::

   Read Think Write.org has always been an excellent site for out of school time education, with a wide variety of activities catered directly towards afterschool programs! What this site also offers are grade-level lessons for grades K-12 using math in creative ways.  

Example: Take "The Great Save", a lesson about spending and saving where students can relate to real world concepts. 

Overview:  Looking for a way to make the literature-mathematics connection? This lesson can help. Students begin by reading and discussing A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams, making connections to their own lives and writing their reactions. Next they explore the concept of saving for specific purposes. After looking at sources to compare costs of self-selected items, students set up a savings plan and timeline for the purchase of their items. Students ultimately learn the value of saving their money to meet a self-identified goal and how to go about doing so.

MA State Frameworks: Operations and Algebraic Thinking   4.OA

Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. 1. Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

2. Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.24

3. Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. ::QUICK, QUALITY ACTIVITIES & GROUP GAMES::

For out of school time educators, implementing quick, quality activities is part of the job description.  The Scholastic site offers 5 Math Games in 15 Minutes of Less, perfect for busting boredom during those last 15 minutes of homework hour, or during a transition or anytime you can think of and for all elementary grade levels!  These games are easy to start, fun to play, and require basic materials that are probably already in your program.  

Example:  String ’Em Up (15 minute game)

      Which is greater—arm span or height? Ask students to stand in groups according to their predictions: those who think their arm span is greater than, less than, or equal to their height. Give pairs a piece of string to test and measure, then regroup according to their results.

Challenge: Estimate the ratio of the length of an arm or leg to body height, then measure to check the accuracy of the estimate.

MA State Standards : Grade 2-Measurement and Data 2.MD Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.

1. Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.

2. Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.

3. Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. 4. Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.

::REAL-LIFE APPLICATIONS::

 This site is a collection of math activities primarily for the age 8-12 group that have been developed, implemented, and successful in after school programs across the country.  These activities can be used as part of ongoing curriculums or just as daily lessons.  

Example: "A Measure of Health" 

Academic Goals/ Student Objectives: 

understand the need for measuring with standard units

understand that measurements are approximations and how differences in units affect precision

select and apply appropriate standard units and tools to measure volume

learn the health benefits of the fruit they use to make smoothies

increase amounts in a recipe so that it makes enough for the whole group

  Out of school time educators can really hone in on what types of printable worksheets their students need using this great online site.  At this site, educators can create their own customized and printable worksheets in the categories of: Fact Sheets, Flashcards, Counting, Multiplication, Word Problems, Games and Time/Money. This is a great resource to use during prep time to enhance the quality of the homework period during program time. One way to get started is to use their "Daily Trivia" idea to pose a question for your students grades K-6 each day.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics offers a multi-faceted resource to all teachers and out of school time teachers.  You can search through lessons by grade level and by specific skill, then find a variety of lessons that include the lesson objectives, materials, PDF printables, assessment and extension ideas, as well as the standards of mathematical practice that the lesson targets.  Out of school time teachers will also be pleased with the variety of online games that have great quality graphics so their students can play appealing games during media, library or homework.  The games are also categorized by grade level and skills so you can easily set students up with the specific concepts that they should practice.

Objectives: Students will:

Create, compare and describe different two-dimensional nets that can be folded into a three-dimensional cube

Examine the properties of the nets and resulting cubes, including surface area

Use rotations and flips to compare various nets

IXL is an excellent resource than can be used in out of school time programs for students to get added practice in each elementary grade level.  The site is broken up by user friendly, grade level links that provide practice games for each skill taught in that grade. The links even provide preview questions so you can be sure that you are setting students up with the correct practice activities.  Another great aspect of this site is that is gives the teacher easy access to the Core Standards as well as the standards for each state in the US. 

 The site does advertise to become a member and enjoy the added perks of creating a class roster (which could be used for out of school time programs and homework groups), reporting the progress of the students, and aligning the practice games towards standardized test preparation.

BEAM!  Can be summed up in three words: FREE PRINTABLE RESOURCES!  Of course, there is much more to say about this mecca of materials for educators.  Out of school time staff can easily use this site during their prep time for the day, and acquire many valuable, age appropriate resources for the students they work with.  This site offers a easy to use grid where educators can match the concept students are learning to the age of their students, and viola! many free PDF worksheets, games, and activities show on the screen.   Another important feature of this site is that it offers educators the latest scholarly articles and discussions on math education. It is also a searchable site where educators can quickly find what they are looking for.

Objective: Students factor out a product and find the matching factors on the grid.

Houghton Mifflin is the curriculum widely used in schools across the United States.  Everett Public Schools adheres to this curriculum.  Out of school time educators can prepare their daily homework extensions by simply clicking on the grade level they work with and from there can find a brilliant amount of resources directly linked to the school books that our students are using. Each grade level provides vocabulary cards,  teaching tools, leveled practice, problem solving, math at home, math investigations and much more.  This site also provides a Kids' Place, for students with internet access to engage in a range of activities from games, to virtual manipulatives and extra help.

  Out of school time educators can prepare for their daily tasks by going to this site and printing free materials needed to engage students in small group or individual games.  The site incorporates everyday math connections such as basketball and makes the learning fun through the incorporation of creative ideas.  This is a great source for group games during homework hour. 

EXAMPLE: "Around The World" - Use flashcards to reinforce student skills. Students move around the your space with every right answer, and can "chance" an answer if they get one wrong.
