Even the ballon is done
The ending!
Ready for dinner!!!!
A little breakfast prior to handing out the goodie bags....let the real fun begin
There will be lots of pics...sorry but not sorry
“Birthdays was the worst days now we sip champagne when we thirst-ay”. This is the room, with a private spa, you get when you’re 40.
How a 40 year old packs for Vegas! Don’t laugh you will soon understand.
Few hours till 40: The photo contains the top 30 cities that most frequently viewed my blog. 1,200+ page views, with users from 10 countries and 118 cities the ride has been fun. Some of the cities I can name the people there, some I can't, and some I had no clue I knew that many people. Either way I enjoyed reflecting on my life moments. In next few hours I'll be turning 40 but all I can think about is celebrating this weekend with some good friends and the great surprises planned over the next few months. So as I continue to age I'll remain young by staying healthy, always having something fun to look forward to both in the short & long term, and always strive to fulfill my dreams. Like most people, I truly don't feel my age and I certainly don't always act my age. This weekend my 40th celebration pictures will paint the picture of a 40 year old pretending to be 21 again. Next week will be recovering and going back to the grind. With that said here we go in: 521 weeks and 5 days 3,652 days 87,648 hours 5,258,880 min 315,532,800 seconds I'LL BE 50.....WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 days till 40: this morning was my body fat testing and I failed! My goal is 8% and my body fat is 11%. The technique to measure was Hydrostatic Body Fat testing. Or in simple terms, the underwater body fat testing. According to Dr. Kenneth Cooper's Institute for Aerobic Research my body fat % is in the 95% percentile. The average males body fat in their 20s is 14.1%, 30s is 17.5%, and 40s is 19.6%. An athletic males body fat in their 20's is 8.3%, 30s is 12.7%, and 40s is 15.1%. To give perspective, obesity, or excessive body is defined as a value greater than 30%. By those standards im doing well. In order to decrease my body fat% further, I need to eat more. Most people believe in order to lose body fat all you need to do is eat less. In my case, I'm pretty lean and if I continue to decrease my weight it will be unhealthy. So I need to do the opposite and eat more and put on lean muscle mass. By increasing my weight with lean muscle mass my body fat% decreases. Based on my body size and composition I need 1,600 calories just to sustain my body when resting. Since I'm pretty active that means a significant increase my calories. Perhaps including an entire additional meal throughout the day. I know I know, poor me needing to eat more. Just keep in mind this is not eating more of everything. This is eating more raw veggies, fruits and lean protein without all the sauces and dips. It truly is challenging to eat "healthy" and maintain weight. If you're rolling your eyes, I challenge you to eat healthy for just 1 month and see what happens. You don't need to count calories or eat at certain times of the day. just eat whenever you like so you will never be hungry. it's simple to do since you don't need to track anything. But no simple carbs, nothing in your coffee, no sauces or salt and no cheat days. Just raw veggies, fruit, and lean protein. Have lots of water and, though not recommended, even without working out you will drop lots of weight. In the mean time I'm headed to store to stock up on a ton of healthy food and figure out how I'm going to be constantly eating. In 3 months and a few pounds heavier I'll retest.
7 days till 40: “it ain’t the 6 mins, it’s what happens in that 6mins!”
I’m a horrible blogger but for all the right reasons. The past few weeks has been busy with work and colds which has significantly impacted my little free time. Two of the days i wasn’t feeling well I actually missed working out for the first time since January. But Interesting enough this was a great reminder of how fast time goes. One night you cant fall asleep cause you’re so excited at 16 to take your drivers test and the next moment you’re a week away from turning 40. Similarly you’re 40 days away from 40 and the next moment you’re 7 days away looking forward to the celebration (where I will act 21 and hope to survive). In the past 40 days Prince died and Kobe retired. All reminders of the reality of time going fast.
Sometimes in these fast paced times we forget what we really want or its far to easy to put something off until tomorrow. At 40, I realize I can’t lose sight of my priorities cause in the next moment I’ll be serving detention at some senior home!
Which leads me to this movie clip from Vision Quest. Although a lot of this is cheesy the one line that has stuck with me is “it ain’t the 6 mins, it’s what happens in that 6mins!” A great reminder for the next 40 years!
22 days till 40: Booked my body fat testing for Saturday, May 7th. I’m making good progress towards my goals. I’m now repping 185lbs, did 205lbs 5x pretty easy but was scared to do more without a spot. So I’m hoping I can rep 225lbs 5x by May 10. My weight is also only 3lbs heavier than when I was 19. But just to be clear the weight is simply a bi-product of clean eating and exercise. My goal is to be optimal shape (strength, cardio, all blood test related items) not skinny.
Appreciation
Jamie,
Appreciating everyone of your posts.

23 days till 40: My memory for meaningless moments is pretty good. If someone tells me something that bothers them or if something happened that I thought was funny I tend not to forget. Through my 40 years, I had some embarrassing moments or just did some plain stupid things. I’ll keep this list PG so most of the embarrassing/stupid things won’t appear. These are things that come to the top of my mind in no particular order. I’ll continue update as a remember more:
1. In kindergarten, I peed my pants during class and then came up with a brilliant idea. At recess bury myself in the sandbox from the waist down, have the sand absorb the pee, and no one will ever know. Well I found out sand also sticks to wet.
2. When I was 8 my older brothers took me to toilet paper a house. In preparation I got decked out in camouflage. The great news was the home owner wasn’t home. The bad news is he came home as we were destroying his house. Good thing I had that camo on so I was able to just lay on his lawn and he couldn’t even see me….until he saw me :(
3. In 6th grade my grades were at their worst. Rather than just owning it, I decided to have someone forge my fathers name. Turns out Michael is spelled different than Michelle.
4. Around the age of 18, rather than my friend and I split the cost for a motel room the perfect solution was to sleep on a bus stop….in Tijuana.
5. In my 20’s seemed like a lot of people were coloring their hair either bleach blond or black. I went for black and ended up with black with a lot of blue and was to broke to pay for the needed material to fix.
6. In elementary school (I think 3rd grade) junior Olympics I won 1st place for the distance throw. That is the girls 1st place (see pic and name and you’ll understand). With that said, we had some killer female athletes in school so this to me is actually an accomplishment and not embarrassment.
7. In college, I had a really bad farmers tan. So when I went to the beach I put sun block on only the pale portion to avoid burning that part.
8. I was a huuuuuuuggggggeeee WWF (now WWE) fan. Not saying I did but I may have played wrestling in jr. High at lunch. Good thing I did not have the much desire macho mans glasses, ultimate warriors arm bands, and big boss mans club.
9. In college, I helped someone move some recliners. If you have a truck you tend to help a lot of people move. Well recliners are so heavy you don’t need to strap them down even when driving in the freeway. Please learn from me that air is very strong and can lift extremely heavy items straight up in the air and shatter them. Thankfully no one was directly behind me. to this day I still think what if someone was behind me.
10. Several times throughout my youth parents told me I was no longer allowed to play with their kids. Funny how naive parents are about their own kids! Look at your kids now, you parents owe me an apology!
11. Once I worked at a carnival and noticed the game I was running was not level. Well I was such a good employee I took some rocks to level it out. Later I was pulled into the merchandise room and yelled at for the unusually high amount of prizes I distributed to the all the winners!
12. In elementary school I tried out for a talent show. To this day I can’t understand what was wrong with my character trying to sell cigarettes and cigars. People were so PC even back then.
13. At 16, I took my car to Vegas and played some video poker. Beginners luck I was dealt a straight flush with the first 5 cards on the dollar machine…..chaaaaaaschiiiiiinnnng!!! Wait you have to hold the cards before hitting deal/draw?
14. In junior high some of the days I’d ride a motorcycle to school. When you’re like 4 feet tall and about 25lbs it’s kind of obvious you are not street legal. Good thing I was lucky and the police officer actually cut me a deal. He’d let me off if I walked the motorcycle home. Bad thing, I was lazy, walked one block, started riding again only to have Mr. Officer spot me in block 2.
15. Speaking of Vegas and Jr. High. At a young age I was fascinated with gambling so much in order to actually gamble at a table I purchased a gray wig and beard to look like an old 4 foot tall biker. Well, the casino must have heard about my skills and were worried about losing since it was only a few steps out the elevator before I was surrounded by security.
16. In my younger years, I thought I was going on a job interview. Only to be essentially kidnapped (driven by the “interviewer” about 30 miles) and told to go door to door and collect “donations” for a charity. Thankfully one homeowner recognized the man and called the police.
17. Prior to 16, maybe even much prior to 16 my friends and I would borrow a car of someone that was probably 25. The car has some special features….like interesting ways to stop the car. With that said, Learning how to drive a car that required the emergency brake to stop taught me how to drive well. And not just any emergency brake, for this car you tied a string to the emergency brake and pulled the sting to go and then pressed said brake to stop.

28 days till 40: unfortunately, there are only 24 hours in a day and the sleep foundation (real) recommends 7-9 hours asleep for my age. However, they do say six/ten may also be appropriate. Which means it’s a good day if I hit the low end of “may also be appropriate”.
I’m a pretty structured person when it comes to my schedule. my typical week day starts off around 4:30-4:45am and I’m out of the house by 5/5:30 after eating and packing my gym bag. I’ll workout and be at my desk around 7:30/8:00. My evening schedules are dependent on work. The light workload days I try to get home for a little bit and then go to jui jitsu by 7:30, train until 8:30, get home, eat and shower. That’s on the light work days. Well, this happens to be a week where the workload is heavy and I need to make some choices with limited options. So the longer blog posts may suffer the next few days. With that said, I’m beyond thankful that the current decisions in my life are on matters of luxuries and insignificance. I’m well aware that this can change at any given moment…….so I’ll just pause and enjoy my current first world problems.
29 days till 40: the days are going fast and there is a long ways to go to achieve my goals.
30 days till 40: Me at 5 is very similar to me at 40 Here it is, 30 days away from the big 4 0! Here is some full transparency into my life! High school students with C averages or lower have less than a 50/50 chance they will earn even 1 college credit (Rosenbaum, 2001). There are additional studies on high school performance and pay as an adult. As you can imagine higher grades are correlated with higher income. Something that always intrigued me is understanding how I ended up an outlier. Most academic studies predicting success, due to time constraints and lack of data, report on the overall population and only use grades as the predictor. To get the strongest predictors you need more variables added into the equation so you can segment the population further. Sorry this is what I do daily but I won’t bore you with quantitative and qualitative research. I took it upon myself to understand why my outcome is different than other low performing students. To do this, I collected all records the conejo valley unified school district kept in my file and through the qualitative assessments I found my answer (which aligns well with recent studies). Recently a study found the highest predictors of college graduation and excelling in life is getting connected to the right people, possessing adaptability and resilience, high emotional intelligence, a clear outcome, and making good decisions. When simply looking at grades, yes my outcome is surprising. However, when you expand the analysis further and include qualitative measures it makes sense. Thankfully my strengths are in areas aligned to successful professionals. In case you can’t read the photo above I highlighted key strengths and also provide commentary on how I haven’t changed in many ways! So parents keep in mind as you open your child’s next report card that your child’s life is not doomed. Not every low grade guarantees an unsuccessful future just like every A doesn’t mean future millionaire. Besides success and fortunes come in many forms (happiness to me is the ultimate success/fortune but that’s for another day). The question I can’t answer is, why the bleeeepp did my teacher write positive qualities about me in a stored away file that parents don’t see and not include it on the written portion of my actual report card???? Could have helped at least reduce some of the punishment! kindergarten - “especially enjoys Math.”, “Good self image”, “extremely well liked by peers”, “speech hard to understand what he says” My entire professional career has been in positions dealing with numbers, I have a strong self image, am liked by most of my peers (without a doubt many that don’t get me hate me and that’s never changed), and yes, I still often mumble and struggle with many R words like world & squirrel (but clever enough to use other words instead like earth or that rat with a big bushy tail). 1st grade - signs of bad writing and poor spelling appear. Well for sure that has not changed but guess what did change, technology!!! 1st grade is also when people recognized that I have a sense of humor, like making people laugh and socializing. That same exact description can be used for me at work last week. The interesting part is having a sense of humor actually is a negative in school but a major positive in life. Pretty much the same things are mentioned throughout K-6. The one that sums it up best and is still used today was from my 4th grade teacher “Jamie overcomes weaknesses in the academics with a terrific self-concept." (function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-75827528-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview');
31 days till 40: The Last Book store in downtown LA located in a former bank space is great place to go on a rainy day and great reminder of how long ago 6th grade was with books like "the babysitter club".
