Anyone can set up a Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn account, but you need a strategy to make it a success.
I admit when I saw this tweet in my feed this morning, I was horrified.
Why would anyone turn on the option to receive direct messages from any follower (even if you donāt follow them back)? I get enough annoying auto-DMs from people I follow (āThanks for the follow! Please like my...

8 Things to Do AFTER You Get Media Coverage!
Most of the advice you see on music publicity (including mine) deals with how to get it in the first place. And itās no wonder. Getting on the mental radars of music editors, reviewers and writers can be a challenge for many self-promoting artists. But what do you do when you actually land that coveted free media exposure? Should you just sit back, relax and soak up the feeling of victory? Yes, but you must also capitalize on the moment and turn it into even more free marketing! Here are 10 things to do after you get publicity. Each will enhance the value of the free coverage you just earned, and many of them work together: Ā Ā Ā Celebrate that you just got free publicity! Do a happy dance, jump up and down, and have a beer while you do the rest of these things. You deserve to celebrate!
Ā Ā Ā Add a link to it on your website or blog. Write a quick synopsis in your own words of what it is and where it appears, then link to the article, review, interview, podcast, etc. Ā Ā Ā Link to it in your EPK (electronic press kit). It is always good to keep your electronic press kit updated with hot new accolades. Be sure to quote from and link to the write-up or video from within your EPK.
Ā Ā Ā Tell the world on social media. Why not talk it up with your friends, fans and followers? They may even help you share it ā thus making your free publicity go viral to some degree. Make sure you use all of your social media profiles: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, etc.
Ā Ā Ā Ask people to share and retweet on social media. Sometimes you donāt get things in life unless you ask for them. Sharing your good news is one thing you can and should directly ask for. Donāt just assume your peeps will pass your link along if they want to. Actually say āPlease shareā or āPlease retweet.ā You might be surprised how many people actually do it when you ask.
Ā Ā Ā Let your fans know via email. Do you have a list of email contacts? (I certainly hope you do!) Send them a quick note. Personalize it and tell them why the publicity excites you, not just that you got some free press.
Ā Ā Ā If the news source page allows comments, ask fans to leave comments to fan the flames. If the press you got sits on a web page that allows comments (and most do these days), encourage your supporters to leave some. That might push the page into the siteās āmost popular postsā list for that week.
Ā Ā Ā If itās significant national or online press, let your local media know about it. Write up a quick press release or just send a short personal email to let your regional press contacts know about the cool exposure you just got. That may very well lead to more local publicity. Always remember that free publicity can easily lead to more publicity, wider exposure, and image enhancement.

Some basic Facebook PR tips ....
1. A fan page is for your company Facebook page; a profile page is for your personal page. Remember the difference, or Facebook will shut your page down. That would be a major āfail.ā 2. Use the real estate available to you: Put up a great profile pic, have a bio, and add links to your other sites. 3. Add pictures. Pictures enable people to see what your brand is about and realize itās more than just a ālogo.ā Upload pictures from events, conferences, demos, and just the regular everyday awesomeness in your office. 4. Be human! Donāt just post, post, post. No one wants to hear all about you, all the time. Ask questions, reply, and talk as you would in everyday life. 5. Share other peopleās posts. Engage and demonstrate that you value content and opinions from others, too. 6. Connect your platforms. Did you write a blog post? Have it automatically post on your Facebook page so others can have access to it easily and quickly. 7. Have contests or other exciting giveaways or events, which encourage both online and offline participation with your brand via Facebook. 8. Update regularly, not occasionally. Fans grow accustomed to the regularity of posts; they will fall off your loyal fan wagon if you donāt keep up. 9. Use Facebook Insights to monitor your success with your fans and to see why and when your fansā activity increases or decreases. Itās helpful for future campaigns and promotions. 10. Be relevant. Post content that provides value to your target audience, but also add some fun stuff, too. The 80/20 rule is a great way to start out: Thatās 80 percent relevant content, 20 percent fun stuff.

WHATāS YOUR REPUTATION?
Merriam Webster defines āreputationā as the common opinion that people have about someone or somethingĀ : the way in which people think of someone or something.
People who know me well know that I take my reputation, my name, and all that is associated with it seriously. As a result, it bothers me to no end when there are absurd rumors or negative opinions about who I am, what I am about, and what I stand for. While I generally have a good reputation with people, there are a few people who have opinions of me that are not in line with who I really am or what I am about. When I get wind of it, I generally have a hard time letting that go because I feel that not only should I be vindicated, my name should be clear and cleaned from faulty accusations. But then I started thinkingā¦not all reputations are bad. There are some reputations that speak of who you really are as a person, and accurately defines what you are about. You see, your reputation, whether positive or negative, precedes you.
I have found that people typically love to spread the negative reputation about individuals and rarely openly share the positive. Regardless of whether or not the negative reputation is fueled by false witnesses or not, people are naturally inclined to give you the side eye once they hear something that they judge as wrong. So then, what do you do when your reputation precedes you? Well the most simple thing is to do you. Donāt waste precious time trying to convince people that you are not who others say you are. Your time is valuable. Get it? VALUABLE. Time is an expensive commodity; once it has been spent, you canāt get it back. Therefore, your life and the FRUIT thereof is the only way you can effectively respond to what your critics have said and thus formed a reputation that has gone before you. Although those false witnesses may NEVER turn back and repent, or take back what was spoken, they will know at the end of the day that their words were merely a premature judgment based on their jaded yet very limited and non-discerning perception of you. I repeat; at the end of the day, THEIR WORDS WERE MERELY A PREMATURE JUDGMENT BASED ON THEIR JADED YET VERY LIMITED AND NON-DISCERNING PERCEPTION OF YOU. So, with that in mind, be free. Live for you. I promise you that life is way more fulfilling if you do.

ONLINE PUBLICISTS, KEEP THIS IN MIND!
The key differentiator between traditional media and social media is: YOU. Traditional media works like this: You get reviewed in a newspaper or in a magazine, or played on the radio and itās broadcast out into the world. People read the magazine or hear a song on the radio. Itās ONE WAY or PASSIVE. Social media, is completely different. Itās a TWO WAY or INTERACTIVE street. You are not only invited to participate, but also encouraged to do so. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter and blogs facilitate easy participation, which is completely transparent and you (and all who are connected) can see, react and participate with you. - Ariel H.
