FYI, intentionally or not, the narrative of Deathly Hallows explicitly juxtaposes a direct parallel between Draco, current master of the Elder Wand, lying to protect Harry, its next master, from Voldemort, and Gellert, its former master, lying to protect (the memory of) Albus, its subsequent master and his canonical lover, from Voldemort on the exact same night at almost the exact same time.

And there is an important contrast too - Gellert is too late; all he can do is protect what is left of Albus, as Albus himself is gone. Draco is not too late. He can protect Harry’s life, and does.
