4th Quarter / Wheres your Garden?
I’m sure many of you know who Rick Rubin is, if not, he’s this guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBHADseIs-w
If anyone remembers the commercials for Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail album, he was the old white guy nodding his head on the couch with no socks or shoes on, to further extend how weird this dude is…
That bearded, Gandolf looking dude is one of the greatest, and most successful producers in history. His studio in California, Shangri La, is considered one of the most coveted places to create because of the beautiful scenery surrounding it, and the simplicity inside it. The walls are completely white with the rooms completely devoid of anything but the essentials: somewhere to sit, some light, and an instrument, that’s pretty much it. The simplicity in the surroundings reflects his reductionist approach to a record and lifestyle in general.
But In his simplicity is brilliance, and many things about his minimalistic platitudes hold value from the physical to the sonic. Kanye West and Rick spent the remaining hours of Yeezus at that studio. They also worked on 808’s together. Both albums offer a very minimal sounding Kanye, for better or worse.
People like Rick and Ye use only what they need to use (creatively) and ask the question, “How can you get the same feeling, or better, without using so much?” In so many situations its like second nature for some to jump to the conclusion of “Lets add more” to solve a problem. In music and life, it just muddies up everything.
A garden is usually a place of peace, beauty and calmness; a place where you can really feel the “vibes” according to DJ Khaled. Another One has a point though, every thing and every place has energy, and if you use it the right way you can do incredible things.
Apologies for the novel, hope your 4th was everything you wanted it to be.
It was Christmas in Hawaii last night. I didn't get the memo.
