On the topic of knitting in mash as someone who knits i wanna talk about how often characters are seen holding skeins for each other as they roll them into balls. Because let me tell you hand rolling a skein without a yarn winder can take ages depending on the thickness of the yarn. And its such a perfect casual act for this show because not only does it demonstrate the inherent boredom of the base but it ALSO demonstrates the inherent love that they have for each other that theyre willing to sit like that and hold up the yarn so perfectly 'cause if youre not careful that shit can tangle and fast. Its such a minor, simple detail but I love it so much. Also the fact that its often RED yarn? Like theyre holding red strings of fate? Hellooooo

a farce should go off like a pistol shot, but it's always gonna fly over some people's heads...

tbf i think a lot of the types who say this are doing it in a subconsiously syllogistic way of "i like mash, i like good tv, and good tv isn't preachy; therefore, mash wasn't preachy," which is a logic trap a lot of people can get caught in, rather than looking directly at early-seasons episodes like "george" or "the chosen people" and going "ahh yes, perfectly apolitical tv!"

satire may have a higher miss rate of getting its message across to a broad audience, but i don't think that makes it less valuable a medium for social commentary... its strength is planting those seeds into your brain while you're distracted laughing!
