Wow, what a journey this past year of photography has been. I've learned so much and travelled to some incredible places around the Adirondacks and elsewhere in the country.

For this final photo, I've returned home to a field about a mile from my house, which was featured once before in this Project 52.

As I reach the end of this rewarding (and at times, challenging) project, I'm looking forward to another year of photography and exploration both in NY state and beyond!

Glow (51/52)

A stunning Adirondack morning on Long Pond in the St. Regis Canoe Area. One of the best things about waking up for sunrise while kayak camping in the Adirondacks is the misty mornings as the fog rises of the lakes and ponds and is illuminated by the rising sun.

The Passage of Time (50/52)

The Pharoah Lake Wilderness Area in the Adirondacks is a special place for me. I've gone backpacking there numerous times now with my dad and brothers, and captured some excellent photos.

This trip was no exception. Despite almost leaving behind my tripod to save weight, I decided at the last moment to bring it, and I was so glad to have it along despite the heavier pack. I used a 10-stop ND filter on this shot to achieve a long exposure during daylight and create the impression of moving clouds in a still image. It is a unique look that I really like capturing.

The Approach (49/52)

Clouds roll across the top of Giant Mountain and Rocky Peak Ridge on an early summer day in the Adirondacks. The view from Owl's Head Lookout is a stunning one, although it is hard to capture photographically the immediacy of the mountains rising up before you. A rather low peak, the Lookout provides a stunning close up view looking up at Giant and RPR, with a rugged valley stretched out below.

Highlight (48/52)

Snow lingers in the highest mountains of the Adirondacks, but in the valleys below, life is beginning to spring forth after a long, cold winter. Streams and rivers come to life with crystal cold water from snowmelt.

It’s exciting to see the park in transition between seasons. Every trip is a new experience, revealing something fresh and intriguing. Glimmers of hope shine out in the wilderness as the trees and fields begin to grow once again.

Hatteras Light (47/52)

During my week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I spent the days with my family boogie boarding in the ocean, and windsurfing/paddleboarding/kayaking in the sound. The mornings and evenings were reserved for photography however.

Although I mostly stuck to the Rodanthe area, I took a trip down to the Hatteras Lighthouse for sunset one day, and was greated with a spectacularly colorful sky. Once I found the ideal angle, I snapped away as the sky was illuminated in a thousand colors.

Palette (46/52)

I spent this week visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina for fun on the surf and the sound. Rodanthe was a charming little beach town with a lot of character, and I realized how much I miss the amazing sunrises/sunsets that occur so often on the Ocean. This was taken at sunset on the sound, our first evening there.

The Lonely Mountain (44/52)

Whiteface Mountain stands wreathed in mist and cloud as dusk falls on the Adirondacks. It's funny how the most interesting photographs are often a happy accident. While heading home from a day of shooting around Lake Placid and Wilmington, I came upon this view just off Route 86, just barely visible in the quickly fading twilight. Although I had just packed up my camera and tripod, I knew I had to try to capture the moment. Moments later it was gone, obscured in a thick mist.

Spring Water (43/52)

As the snow and ice melts away from the lower elevations in the Adirondacks, hundreds beautiful brooks and streams are revealed underneath. This picturesque fork was only a few hundred meters from the spectacular scenic byway, Route 73. The moss covered banks shine a radiant green in the dappled light from the morning sun.

Fire/Water (42/52)

This was my first trip to Roaring Brook Falls in the Giant Mountain Wilderness in the Adirondacks. The layered cascades ascend hundreds of feet into the heart of the mountain, but this view at the base of the falls was too good not to capture. The water almost glows with the reflection of late afternoon sun on rock.

Hints of Spring (41/52)

While snow clings on in the higher elevations, spring streams flow in lower elevations, including this beautiful field next to the road between Jay to Wilmington, NY.

Adirondack Cathedral (40/52)

As spring gradually arrives in upstate New York, winter clings on a little longer in the Adirondack high peaks. Ascending Cascade Mt., one of the most popular hikes in the region, we start seeing more signs of winter the further up we go. I have rarely seen skies as blue as those that greeted us this evening, accompanied by crystal clear views of the High Peaks. Flight (39/52)

Snow geese taking flight as the sun lands on the horizon. The beautiful flocks of migrating geese are one of the best parts about spring. It is truly amazing how many birds congregate in some of these fields. Taken near my home in upstate NY.

Balancing Rocks (38/52)

I hiked Pitchoff Mt. on Sunday afternoon to photograph the sunset with some friends. The two gigantic boulders (named the Balancing Rocks) in the foreground are perched at the edge of a rocky cliff face. The rocks were carried here by a glacier that covered the Adirondacks during the last ice age.

Georgia Sunshine (37/52)

I spent this past weekend just outside of Atlanta, Georgia, filming and photographing a wedding with some close friends. Derrick and Christy (left) have just started a wonderful little wedding film company called Wild Bridge Films. Jenn (far right) is a fellow Project 52er and all-around awesome person. It was so great to work with these fine folks again, and I look forward to more collaborations in the future!

Near Light (36/52)

The sun sets over frozen Lake Champlain, as seen from long point at Point au Roche State Park near Plattsburgh. This location has yielded several weeks of Project 52 photos now, but I think I will be giving it a break for a while.
