The wait on the line was probably the worst of it all.
Goro sighed, his eyes shifting between the watch around his wrist and the column of people ahead of him. He didn't have much time to spare before lunch break was over, but this bakery was one many had recommended to him over his food blog, and he'd just decided he had to see it in person.
As soon as he stepped into the welcoming warmth, he felt himself relaxâas if all the stress from that morning had just unwound and washed away. He knew it was merely temporary, but that didn't matter now.
After a few painful minutes of waiting, it was finally his time to check out. He smiled brightly at the cashier as he fished a twenty dollar bill from his front pocket. A cup of rich dark coffee, two freshly baked croissants, and a slice of their finest shortcake. He truly felt like he was at the top of the world.
Others would find this side of him silly, a contrast to his otherwise calm and serious demeanor, but he didn't care.
Upon paying for his lunch, he headed for the doorâat which he was abruptly stopped, colliding with another body. His coffee was the first to go, spilling all over the stranger's shirt, and he felt anger rush into his vision momentarily. Only after recalling his whereabouts did he force himself to calm down, feigning a worried look instead. âOh, God, I'm so sorry!â he apologized, reaching into the paper bag for a napkin, dabbing at the front of the stranger's now-soaked shirt hastily with one hand.
In truth, he wanted to break whoever this fool wasâwanted to make them regret bumping into him, but he couldn't possibly do anything that'd shatter his reputation. He took a glance of the stranger's face, wanted to see, but he stopped shortly, his hand frozen, his eyes widened and his lips parted.
Goro had possibly never seen anyone as beautiful as this person right before him. All thoughts of anger suddenly vanished, completely mesmerized by the individual in front of him. âWow, um,â he blurted out, laughing sheepishly. He pulled his hand away, shifting the paper bag onto his other arm, outstretching his other to offer a handshake. âLet me make it up to you, please,â he insisted, âI truly am sorry.â
Bullshit. The only thing on his mind was devising ways to extend their time together. He couldn't possibly let this beautiful stranger slip through his fingers.
