dad!10k fic in which the baby kicks for the first time

Seeing as neither Warren nor Addy nor Sun Mei have had a baby, and Serena’s whole thing was weird at best, the pregnancy process is fairly unknown to everyone. Every new progression is exciting, every step is one celebrated by everyone. It isn’t just you and 10k’s baby; it’s everyone’s. Even Murphy, though he did his best not to be interested when Addy first pointed out the appearance of a bump.

When the baby first kicks, though, not everyone is around to see it.

It’s late at night, and the group has retreated to separate rooms in the small house you’re squatting in. You doubt anyone is asleep yet, but the house is quiet around you.

10k sits in the windowsill, looking out the window at the vast expanse of suburbia that is visible from the second floor. You often forget that this is all new to him; what is familiar to you, neighborhoods and houses and tricycles, is foreign to him.

Having been brought up by 10k and your mother as parents, with Addy, Warren, and the others as aunts and uncles, you were raised to be just as hard as them, if not more so. You’re wild, and you’re strong, and you’re brave. You’ve had to be, given what your family’s mission was.

But that was a long time ago. Once Murphy’s reign was toppled, the world went back to what it was: broken. There was no cure, there was no help, there was no hope. There was just life.

And life is what has happened.

There are still Z’s, though less and less as the years go by. The group isn’t nomadic anymore; you’ve taken up in the mountains in Colorado where it’s too cold for most of the Z’s to come. The city rests just at the base of the mountains, making supplies easily accessible.

Everyone has gotten accustomed to the way things are. But, as is inevitable, things will always change.

The change starts when you turn 17, and realize that the boy you’ve grown up with, the boy you’ve fought beside and learned beside, may have a tighter hold on your heart than you had previously realized.

5K’s final costume design was the perfect blend of “early 10K” and Nature Boy’s crow theme (photos by Frank Schaefer).  The emphasis with Holden’s character in the finale was to subtly show how meeting 10K had made him more human.
