You feel ambitious right now. Give your permission to take a break.
Don’t apologize for your success or downplay your brilliance.
HELL YEAH thanks stars
Hans strikes again
i love this guy!
“like taming a lion”
the orchestra is there to support you to make it the best... you know at first, they seem like a lion. and you gotta earn their respect at first. maybe write a good tune. or come up with a good idea.
these two veterans (percussionists)... my secret ambition is to find one thing they haven’t done before and keep on pushing it forward. then they love you for it. they’re your biggest allies. ultimately the real musicians give something that no machine can do.
lots of parallels to my corporate(?) experience. idk why but he’s so amiable!
Who do you write for
Hans Zimmer
writes for a fictitious character Doris, with 2 sons, works really hard, and instead of watching TV decides to spend her hard-earned money in a 2 hour experience... and he takes part of the responsibility of giving her that experience.
shit goose bumps
Doris would be proud..!

beauty
it’s wed 2/12 at 9:29am which means i’m here at home and not at work, experiencing the precarious state of enjoying my partially allotted (but still sweet) freedom and feeling the guilt that comes with it (why are you here and not at work?!) hey homegirl’s gotta live laugh and love amiright
so as i grow older (and maybe after experiencing my last set of psychedelics) i’ve been seeing and i mean really experiencing beauty in things that i took granted most of my life... like the nature, music, art (including photography), history, books, the street corner on my way to work, rainy day and the smell of it, and riding our old lemon Milton with some hiccups that we still love but we know we gotta get a Milton Jr soon...
and friendships. hung out with the old c-gang last night! was so great. miss the friendships. appreciate the dynamic of bantering and poking fun. some things never change, some things do. they say i’ve changed in the last few years of knowing me -- that i’ve become to live more fully rounded human(?)... vs. i guess being one dimensional (gotta! be! a! pm! software! shipfast! tech!). lol
the owner dude (mid 30s?) in the neighborhood mailing shop told me yesterday that it was his first time being back in 2 months of hospitalization where he couldn’t shit so had to be tubed out, diagnosed with stage 2 cancer getting chemo and double the morphine because of so much pain, and worst of all, no one was there when he was hospitalized, including his family and wife, and deciding to get divorced, moving all his stuff out of their apartment the very morning he got back. sending his kids back home with his mother. WHOAO that was a lot of things unloaded onto me first thing on Monday morning. and really puts into perspective of things that do matter vs. don’t matter... like paying $80 for shipping a $10 simcard to india = doesn’t matter. like losing $5k on our old lemon Milton = also doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. gotta appreciate life.
ok but i’m only human and i don’t think i was the coolest cucumber yesterday at work... kinda stroked the fire of this disgruntled and proud employee that i shut down. aw amy. ok i’ll go apologize today...
BACK TO BEAUTY. and getting older. here are some moments of beauty.
Visiting Olana, Hudson Valley River school of artist Frederick Church’s home in Hudson. hot damn i guess our new #goals is owning 250 acres upstate. and owning a mansion with all sorts of trinkets and collectibles from around the world... including a piece of the Parthenon lol
really into busts these days... saw one in hudson for $2700 lol ok i wont get it ok but she was gorgeous.... Beatrice from Dante’s Inferno. maybe i’ll read it.
ok also, these days i find some cigarette smells (not all) kinda good. and more open to trying it. ofc i wont because u know its bad and stuff. lol. DAMN IT CIGARETTE INDUSTRY MARKETING, why does it still look sexy?!?! we’re all fucked up
oh and i got a bump and a bonus! i guess this is why people stay in jobs.. golden handcuffs...
Comms Course
Thu 2/6/2020 at 7:44pm... feeling still kinda sick, eyes closing on me.
so i just took an $800 communication course on ‘how to communicate with slides’ by Own The Room led by instructor named Stewart (and oh many did he look like a Stewart!) ... yeah my job paid for it.
in the beginning they asked me, why are you here? why do i want to improve my communication? is it really because you want to communicate better at your next presentation at work? what’s that why behind the why? i said something around not wanting to let my comm weakness come back to prime my own self-worth and capability, which it started doing, at work. (finding myself potentially getting myself in a rut) and wanted to be validated.. on my areas of both strengths and weaknesses. but maybe it’s more about me wanting to be taken more seriously (also a lot more to unpack there but lets not get there rn)...? but really simply bc i want to be more badass... and i know i can. (damn wouldnt it be cool if i had the eloquence and swagger of BO?) lol kinda funny bc back in 2011 at the bcg interview, they asked me what my strength was, i said ‘communication’ and ended up rambling away...
it was interesting. i’m glad i did it. it’s so hard to stop myself go into the defense mode of judging them (the class, the instructor) so that i can protect myself from their ‘judgment’ (in quotes because it’s not really the judgment that i think it is). i size them up and determine that i’m better than them so that i can tell myself later that what they are saying isn’t so material. WHAT KINDA COWARD AM I?!?! but it’s good, it’s good to recognize these instances (which have been happening alot). these are all the places i can grow more in. channel this negative energy into something positive... i.e. instead of spending energy on judging them, spend it on nurturing myself. self love. wowww i’m so... self-helping these days lol. u know what, it’s good for me.
another interesting thing was that i found myself comparing myself these other people and being relieved that these people are also human, some better and some worse than how i was.. realizing that these “other people” are just human, not so super-human and not so super-better than I ever will be... ok lets unpack this. this is stemming from the immigrant days of always feeling like i’m 2 steps behind, will always be, no matter how hard i try. looking at every average joe american kid as someone who’s just more gifted, better, than i am, because i had this “gap” of 10 years (# of years spent outside of US before coming here).. it’s true, in the beginning, when i first moved here, every kid in class seemed so much more capable than me because i couldn’t speak the language... but it’s been 20 years, and sure, i didn’t spend first 10 years of my life abroad, but that’s not a gap that sets me back... it was a privilege that i got to experience that not many could. that fact that i ramble isn’t really due to me being an immigrant, but prolly because that’s how i innately am inclined to be. c’mon! stop putting these other people on unjustifiably high pedestals.
kinda related to another realization.. most of the lesson today was about being ‘different’, being ‘exceptional’. but this is so contrary to how i’ve grown up! in the last 20 years! because i thought all these american kids/people were so much better than me, they became the ‘goal’ ie the state that i’m striving to reach... so by definition, i’ve put in a lot of effort to fit in, to be in that box these americans drew for me. success also was defined by these people. yes, be excellent, but only in a way that’s been done before. being actually exceptional (i.e. be an exception to the usual) is not what i ever trained myself to be. so being told, hey, now you gotta be different, i kept on seeing myself ask ‘can i do this?’ ‘how much of my personality should/can i show?’ ‘what’s acceptable?’ ‘is this okay?’ because if you stay within the box, you don’t really have to ask these questions. but once i get out, there’s a whole lot more i’m unsure about. someone draw me a new box!
but i don’t need a box. that box represents comfort and a weird mental limitation i’m only applying to myself. BE FREE. BE FREE AMY. be me. embrace what makes me, me. stop putting a box on myself when i want to actually be free. stop muting my authentic self to stay within the box. (...which i do do this alot at this job. feeling the need to be more corporate-y, mute my energy (it’s unprofessional!) and personality...) i don’t want to end up as a muted gray at the end of my life, when my core is a vibrant orange. (or green? yellow?)
u know what tho, i didn’t cringe as much watching myself in the video. progress in self love! good job. also i made a pitch of my empire (”AEMP”) and people liked the idea, asked me after if it’s an existing startup... so thats good i guess.
key takeaways from the session:
strength: i’m magnetic. people like me. i engage people. i bring good energy that is contagious. charisma. good to confirm.
weakness: weak language (uh, uhms, you know, etc) reduces my executive presence... ‘aw amy is cute’, but that’s not where i want to be (or do i?)... also good to confirm. also, posture. also, stop bobbing my head so much.
tactical todos!:
drinking penalty starting tomorrow
“think, edit, speak” every time
pilates? for core and posture.
write out the narrative for every presentation (who what when/where why how)
“get over yourself”... presentation is about the audience, not me
after coming home i watched a lot of example videos of good orators.. obama, ronald reagan, margaret thatcher, MLK jr, JFK. also watched elon musk (lol if he can i can), steve jobs, bill gates, jeff bezos, indra nooyi, michelle obama, elizabeth holmes, jack ma, etc... none of these are perfect human beings or perfect communicators. i don’t really care to talk like a politician, but i do want to be able to influence and inspire with my words with my own personality.
unfortunately people judge you based on your looks, but u can build your charisma: frame, substance, and delivery.
my unfounded confidence tells me that if any of these people can do it, i can. just gotta be humble enough to acknowledge that shit i should work on this and actually put in the effort.
starting with... drinking salt water(? or diluted coke?) every time i say uhs or uhms or youknows or let me start by sayings or any other filler words.
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone
by Lori Gottlieb
1/25/2020 Sat, it’s rainy and gray and windy outside in a beautiful melancholic way, i’m home alone because gabe took Milton to DC (god i hope he comes back alive) and just finished the book instead of going running, obsessively looking up new cars to buy, and avoiding work emails, and avoiding reading mangos and really avoiding my empire because i’ve convinced myself that it’s all silly..)
4.5/5
Ok it turned out to be better than I thought, especially at the end. Didn’t think I was going to cry! Surprised by how human it was. A lot of humanity reflected here that we don’t really go into... even with closest friends. Lots of authenticity and vulnerability (wow, I can’t believe she’s disclosing these things... so cringe! and for her to say that out loud!) Very engaging. Good for her.
Helps me think about life and death, love, rejection, insecurities, selfishness, among many things. I do have to admit that I rolled my eyes many times in the beginning (”here we go another privileged white girl living in Hollywood complaining about more first world problems... and writing a book about it.”).. but peeling back layers, one by one, following the interactions and conversations, i realize the themes are so universal. its about being a human being and all the dimensions that come with it.
Parts that particularly resonated with me..
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances... Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” (Frankl)
“The nature of life is change and the nature of people is to resist change.”
(while responding to dramas w/ J and M and everything else at work, getting car scammed, convincing myself that the empire idea is silly and unrealistic and really, what are you to dream and think this will actually work?!?!)
Loved all the patients and characters, including Lori and Wendell, Rita (”old people still fuck!” — It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over, Inc.), Julie (”I choose neither”), and John (”Am I really an asshole?”). I cheered for them and cried with them.
maybe i should go talk to a therapist...

Wow that was something. I started the book on Monday and finished it on Sunday... last bits delayed because I didn’t want to be done with the book so quick. it’s a type of a book that lingers... and makes you think. and as you think more, you uncover more connections and deeper meanings. well done!
what i loved the most about the book:
psyche of korean immigrants in japan... i’ve never really been exposed to the day to day of what it was like for koreans in japan during this time... or even now, probably
painting the everyday picture of the 1910s to 1990s in korea and japan.. during this time was WWI, Japanese colonization of Korea, WWII, and Korean War that broke the country into North and South. the protagonist Sunja’s life spanned through some of the most dynamic periods in history. the stark contrast of the living standards between the beginning and end of the book is cray
loved how it exposed the nuances of themes that often seem so black and white.. including what does it mean to be a family and a parent? (does it have to be blood related) what does it mean to be a home, a national of a country, a part of a race? e.g. what does it mean to be ‘korean’ when your family has been in japan for generations and you don’t speak the language? what constitutes a marriage - husband and wife? is it a cohabitant under same roof that you have kids with, or something more?
traditional korean values contrasting with the changing times... honor, integrity, dignity, very stark sexist roles... and SUFFERING. damn so much suffering.
religious themes sprinkled throughout the book and its corollary to the immigrant life
very straight forward writing style
5/5 recommended. going to check out her other book
2020
today is 1/5/2020
a new decade! my 30′s!
lots of things going on in the world right now including a possible WWIII that genZers are tiktokking about... in an existential way and an awful apocalyptic fire in Australia. yet another year of crazy president at the helm of this country, some of whose actions i actually would condone.
as always, i’m here, in brooklyn, feeling a bit ambivalent and conflicted about many things, wanting many seemingly opposite things all at once, not quite satisfied with my life....
currently at the Market at The Ashland, our go-to reliable work spot in our hood. 2020 has been good. in the 5 days of 2020 i’ve already...
watched 3 movies (Little Women, Glengarry Glen Ross (fell asleep), Knives Out ** amazing)
gone seeing 2 cars (both Subarus)
dined at The Simone, Di Fara
stayed at the Mr. C by Seaport hotel for the NYE > NY day (loved anderson <3 )
worked out (running or tennis) everyday
organized the freezer (thanks muji containers)
bought a new computer for MY NEW VENTURE (ak venture)
feel better about this new year and decade
very thankful for my hubs
2019 was the year of...
career change and progress (clarifai > dataminr)
intro to self-pampering: spa, masks, mani pedis, diamonds...!
tennis! lots of tennis. playing and attending the US open
trips: Spain, India, London, lots of west coast trips for friends and fam
friendship: beginning of the dragon ladies
return of the mangos... japanese culture and cuisine (soba, sushi)
end to the 19-year old immigration journey.. homegirl is an american citizen now!
did 0 finances. wow. careless spending and lots of stress shopping that i’m not proud of but whatever i earned it
was the year of “making it”... personally, and professionally. so what is next?! getting the boredom jitters. (lol)
realizing that this industry tech, like finance, isn’t quite it for me. even though i’m afraid of letting go... because it feels like there is a lot to lose. i’ve worked! so! hard! but it’s really the last 5 years max. which is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. really, we don’t have a lot of dependencies. and being a wife isn’t actually imposing me with any more duties and responsibilities than what is in my head...
... realizing that really the only thing holding me back from going after what i *actually, really, want* is myself. there is no one stopping me. no environmental factors at play here.
... realizing that i’ve become really risk averse. when my life was a risk, i was able to be a lot more ballsy. and take chances. and be sneaky. and have that edge. after having found my stability, my ground, i’ve become very settled. i’ve been holding onto my stability so dearly because it exemplifies everything i’ve been striving towards. THIS IS IT! THIS IS THE FINISH LINE! i’ve got a great husband, good career that people are trying so hard to get, nice cozy home, savings account that’s growing, enough disposable income to afford occasional travels upstate and internationally, shopping splurges, and mom’s 1 bedroom apartment in NJ.
... realizing that i can no longer call my conundrums as quarter-life crisis anymore, because i probably won’t live to 120, and even a third-life is a stretch because my life from 60 to 90 will be a bit different.
SO WHAT IS NEXT??
life. lots and lots of life. intentionally taking risks because i want to. returning to myself with that edge because hell why not?? fully embracing me as who i actually am and who i actually want to be. asking myself, what do i want in life?!
...realizing that i’ve never really asked this question to myself, seriously, before. when life is a blank space, what will i choose to do? even if i dont know, i’ll keep on asking...
... embracing that yes i am tired, and yes, i’m no longer 15 year old with so much angst and energy, but i’m wiser, more beautiful, smarter, and still full of zeal for all that life has to offer. so i will take my breaks, cocoon up in my room reading mangos but that is not to be ashamed of, because that is actually a part of me.
2020 will be the year of...
these poems...
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
When it's over, I want to say all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms. When it's over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don't want to end up simply having visited this world
The Summer Day
by Mary Oliver
Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don’t know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
When Death Comes
by Mary Oliver When death comes like the hungry bear in autumn; when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse to buy me, and snaps the purse shut; when death comes like the measle-pox when death comes like an iceberg between the shoulder blades, I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness? And therefore I look upon everything as a brotherhood and a sisterhood, and I look upon time as no more than an idea, and I consider eternity as another possibility, and I think of each life as a flower, as common as a field daisy, and as singular, and each name a comfortable music in the mouth, tending, as all music does, toward silence, and each body a lion of courage, and something precious to the earth.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
4.5/5 stars
holy shit this book was long - 800+ pages! might be the longest book i’ve ever read
also holy shit this book made me cry so much
also also this writing. so beautiful. i want to write like that. SO RELATABLE and vivid. how does she do that (checked that it’s a she not a he)
similar effect as the movie “Up” -- passing through the years of 27 to 60ish and death, here in NYC. more relatable in many ways
makes me want to pursue the dreams and passion and then ask myself, what am i doing with my youth right now? will i get a breakthrough? when will it be?
makes me appreciate this city so much *_* #blessed
makes me appreciate that gabe and i still have more to live than to have lived
makes me yearn for friendship, so dynamic and long-lasting, so strong yet fragile. who do i have right now that i could envision myself with for the rest of my life, sharing the experience of growing older and spending time together?
#goals now includes a 5000 sq ft loft in soho
#goals now includes a beautiful glass home upstate (should be 70 acres now with a private lake and whatnot)
Jude St. Francis is like Howard Roark from The Fountainhead... man do i want to be like him, without all those crazy skeletons in the closet. like to cook, sing, bake, work a shit ton, pure math and philosophy
also, are people actually this messed up? like wtf.
we’ll now get new plants and name them Jude, Willem, and maybe Malcolm
is everyone gay in this world, or is this book more biased? i’m confused.

The choice between buying a home and renting one is among the biggest financial decisions that many adults make.
For $1M home, with 20% down payment, and a plan on staying for 5 years, If you can rent a similar home for less than $3,965 per month, then renting is better.

In nearly 40 years working for The New York Times, Mr. Cunningham operated both as a chronicler of fashion and as an unlikely cultural anthropologist.
He didn’t go to the movies. He didn’t own a television. He ate breakfast nearly every day at the Stage Star Deli on West 55th Street, where a cup of coffee and a sausage, egg and cheese could be had, until very recently, for under $3. He lived until 2010 in a studio above Carnegie Hall amid rows and rows of file cabinets, where he kept all of his negatives. He slept on a single-size cot, showered in a shared bathroom and, when he was asked why he spent years ripping up checks from magazines like Details (which he helped Annie Flanders launch in 1982), he said: “Money’s the cheapest thing. Liberty and freedom is the most expensive.”
Mr. Cunningham himself once said: “When I’m photographing, I look for the personal style with which something is worn — sometimes even how an umbrella is carried or how a coat is held closed. At parties, it’s important to be almost invisible, to catch people when they’re oblivious to the camera — to get the intensity of their speech, the gestures of their hands. I’m interested in capturing a moment with animation and spirit.”
So when Mr. Harrington issued his nephew an ultimatum — “Quit making hats or get out of my apartment” — Mr. Cunningham chose the latter, relocating to a ground-floor apartment on East 52nd Street that doubled as a showroom for his fox-edged fedoras and zebra-stenciled toques.
“Fashion is as vital and as interesting today as ever. I know what people with a more formal attitude mean when they say they’re horrified by what they see on the street. But fashion is doing its job. It’s mirroring exactly our times.”
