A throwback to say farewell to one of my all-time favorite Celtic players and players in general.
Field Trip: A Visit To The 5-On-5 Show
On Wednesday, I had to pleasure of visiting the ongoing 5-On-5 basketball art show curated by Eli Neugeboren and TTK at The Kymberle Project in Brooklyn.
The show opened on October 24th, and features a list of artists whom you are most certainly familiar with if you’ve followed this booming subculture of basketball illustrators, or perhaps even if you were one of the people who purchased a copy of my book and was impressed by the artistic side of the project.
Eli and TTK were kind enough to make time out of their schedules to show me around, talk me through each of the art pieces, and give me a new appreciation for how each illustrator differentiates themselves with their own artistic process. I learned a lot about the technical aspect of creating art in many different forms, and came away with an even greater respect for what these people do.
I also had a wonderful conversation with Eli and TTK. As fans of the game, we of course got sidetracked to the point where I had to double check to confirm that yes, indeed Zach Randolph was on the Knicks once upon a time. Takeaway: the Isiah Thomas era, always a great icebreaker at parties, or afternoons spent at an art show.
The process of putting together this show has been months in the making, and it’s a testament to what can happen when a group of talented people come together for a common purpose of demonstrating the potential of merging basketball and art into an expressive form.
For myself, I couldn’t help but feel more inspired to continue to pursue avenues to express my voice and creativity in new and fun ways.
If you’re in the area and have a chance to check out the show, the closing party is tonight, and the details are here. You can follow the show’s official Tumblr here and be sure to check out an interview Eli and TTK did at The Classical last month.
Here are the artists involved in the project whose work you should check out:Eli Neugeboren, Chelsey Boehnke, JO Applegate, Aaron Dana, Nathan McKee, Michael McGrath, TTK, Dana Givens, Cleofus, Misha Tyutyunik, KlashWon and Xia Gordon

Thank you to my amazing wife (and my boys Zack and Leo) and to my Pops for ALWAYS coming out and supporting.
And another one, from the Classical, which is an organization you should all support.
Nice little preview here.
Last two artists! The organizers, TTK (Top 5 pieces), and Eli (enoogs) Neugeboren (bottom 5):
TTK says, “As much as I LOVE the game, know it's history, and watch it, I don't play it. I stopped playing basketball in my early teens. This was around the time when I realized that I was a better artist than athlete.”

Eli Neugeboren is a professor and artist who lives and works in Brooklyn. Some of his oldest memories are being carried into UMass basketball games by his dad back in the 70s. Basketball may not be jazz but it is definitely art.
