5 Star Review: Assassin's Creed: Unity
It took 10 studios four years to undo all of the great gameplay progress that the Assassin's Creed games have made over the past four years.
But what about the sailing?
Gone. Apparently the strongest element of the past two entries wasn't this revolution... even though is was in last year's PS4 and Xbox One installments
How about the combat?
They broke it! Someone decided to fuck it up and make it an unresponsive, Arkham-esque mess rather than the way that almost handled fluidly.
I'm afraid to ask, but what about traversal?
You shouldn't have asked. I haven't experienced this level of frustration about getting caught on objects or jumping off in a really bad direction since AC II. They claimed to have improved by offering a free-run up and free-run down option, but they don't really work.
Can I still summon assassins from the sky?
No.
I don't know what they were thinking. The stripped out so many good elements, and added new things which don't work. They touted a more open ended way to complete the assassinations, but they mislead. The game highlights a couple of side objectives you can do to make the assassination easier, but this is not the open ended sandbox that older Hitman games were.
The map is an absolute disaster. It looks like someone sneezed icons everywhere and then threw garbage on top of it. The story is not particularly exciting, and still doesn't explain why the Templars are evil. Plus they have the least meaningful exploration into modern day that the main series has seen. And if you have seen the "rift" trailer and think that looks really neat, that trailer is way more exciting than it turns out to be.
Ugh.
5 Stars! (Out of 14)
