1950年に勃発した朝鮮戦争で、一時はほとんど朝鮮半島から追い落とされる寸前にまで追い詰められた国連軍は、仁川に逆上陸して攻勢に転じ、満州の国境近くまで進んだ。ダグラス・マッカーサーにとっては一番気分のいいちょどその時期（1950年10月15日）、に、ウェーキー島でハリー・トルーマンとマッカーサーの会談が行われた。

そこでマッカーサーは興味深い発言をした。

会談に同席したハリマンが朝鮮戦争の戦争犯罪人について聞くと、マッカーサーは以下のように述べた。

「戦争犯罪人などに手を出してはいけない。うまくいくものではない。ニュルンベルク裁判や東京裁判は、戦争の抑止力にはならなかった」

つまり、マッカーサーは「東京裁判は誤りだった」との告白を行ったのだ。

マッカーサーは当初、「真珠湾に対する"騙し討ち"だけを裁く裁判を望んでいたのだが、ドイツでニュルンベルグ裁判がはじまってしまったので、日本に対してもやむなく同様の裁判を行わなければならなくなった」と語っていた。

朝鮮戦争を戦ってみると、がぜん、日本側の言い分が基本的に正しかったことが、マッカーサーには痛いほどわかった。東京裁判における日本側の主張の一番重要な部分は、共産主義の脅威である。満州を守らなければ満州が共産化する。それから支那も赤化する。支那事変であろうが、満州事変であろうが、その背後にはコミンテルンが働いていたと東條英機は主張した。

日本の「A級戦犯」を処刑して二年後、まさにそのとおりになった。支那全土は満州も含めて共産主義になってしまったのである。その時はじめて、アメリカは事態の重大さに気づいた。それで東京裁判宣言の舌の根も乾かないうちに、日本との講和条約を結ぶべく動くことになる。

翌年、マッカーサーは日本の戦争が侵略ではなく、自衛戦争であったことを認める。
