breaks my fucking heart how each time Occtis has to talk about what happened to him, it gets more straightforward and matter-of-fact. He's a scientist, okay, and he needs to relate these events like a series of observable facts. Because if he didn't talk about it like a fascinating arcane experiment that just so happens to be his body, he'd have to talk about what it felt like, and if he dwells on the fear and pain and betrayal of how his own brother cut out his heart, he will not be able to function. And he probably can't even cry anymore, so! This is how he has to tell it!

And despite that, just hearing the bare-bones "observable facts" version of things is horrifying, and the people who hear about it are horrified - and he seems surprised, every time, when someone expresses pity or sympathy for what he must have suffered. He wasn't trying to tell you about his suffering! He didn't want to make you cry! He just wanted to be clear and straightforward about the situation! And that honestly makes it worse!

One of my favourite things we learned this episode is that the problem with Tyranny's Occtis impersonation (aside from the whole "he is deceased" thing) is that she played him as way too meek and deferential. Based on his behaviour during the bridge combat, the real Occtis would have walked into that basement and declared that since he outranks everyone else here, he's now their boss and they need to do as he says
