in the latest cyber-news: the internet archive has lost their case against 4 major publishing houses (verge article). they’re going to appeal, but this is still a bad outcome. the fate of the internet is currently hanging in the balance because 4 multibillionare publishing groups missed out on like $15 of combined revenue during the pandemic because of the archive’s online library service. it’s so fucking stupid.

for those who don’t know what the internet archive is, it’s a virtual library full of media. books, magazines, recordings, visuals, flash games, websites - a lot of these things either don’t exist anymore or cannot be found & bought. heard of the wayback machine? that’s part of the internet archive. it is the most important website to exist, and i don’t say that lightly. if the internet archive goes down, the cultural loss will be immeasurable.

so how can you help?

boycott the publishing companies involved in this. they’re absolute ghouls, frankly, and don’t deserve a penny. the companies involved are harpercollins (imprints), wiley (imprints), penguin random house llc (imprints), and hachette book group (imprints). make sure the websites are set to your location as it may differ worldwide.

learn to torrent. download a torrent client (i recommend transmission), a vpn (i recommend protonvpn - sign up and choose the area that’s closest to your continent/country), and hit up /r/piracy on reddit for websites. with torrenting, you can get (almost) any media you want for free in high quality, with add-ons such as subtitles, and with no risks of loss. i would also recommend getting into the habit of watching stuff online for free. the less you can pay to a giant corporation, the better.

get into the habit of downloading and archiving materials. find a TB external hard drive, ideally the higher the better. it’ll probably cost around $60 for 1TB and continue to go up, but they’re so so useful. if you can’t afford a drive, look for any GB harddrives or memory sticks you have lying around and just fill them up. videos, pdfs, magazines, songs, movies, games - anything you can rip and download and fit on there, do it, because nothing is permanent.

donate to the internet archive. this is the most important option on the list. the IA relies entirely on funding, and it’s going to need more to fight this case. whatever you can donate, do it. i promise it’s helpful.

Character Profile: Benny a.k.a. 1980-Something Space Guy

Everyone’s favourite LEGO astronaut, there’s more to this little blue space guy that meets the eye. He has a fun and hyper personality, sure, but that’s just scratching the surface.

Joy - As expected by most people, Joy is Benny’s number one emotion. With a love for his friends and a passion for building spaceships, his happiness is never far away. Whilst Joy doesn’t take complete control of Headquarters, Benny’s characteristic attribute of resilience and (perhaps strained) optimism in times of danger is what his whole character is majorly recognised for.

Anger - Benny is not one you’d expect to be an angry person. He just isn’t. His anger is more frustration then anything. He’s more a person to use an annoyed tone when he’s unable to express himself the way he wants to. He’s not petty though - there’s a difference in having no way you want to express yourself and getting annoyed when things don’t go your way. The second time he’s told his spaceship is not the thing they need at the moment, he expresses his frustration at being rejected a second time. Of course, he understands the reason why, but being driven by his passions makes him vulnerable to this sort of disappointment.

His frustration at a modern computer is pretty much self-explanatory - since he likes dealing with technology from the 80′s, this is just something he happens to not be so used to. After all, dealing with technology from a certain era means he probably thinks that all technology would work in ways that he’s used to.

Fear - Whether you think it or not, Benny is capable of fear. More often than not, Benny’s capacity to remain optimistic kicks in and he goes to whatever possible length to search for ideas, however impossible they sound. Since his emotion Joy is an integral part of his personality, he’s always trying to see the positives in everything. When things begin to crumble and Emmet’s plan to save the universe is immediately obliterated, the only evidence we need to really underpin his capability to be resilient whilst feeling fear is this line: “Emmet, you’ll…you’ll think of something, right? Like you always do.” Which says a lot about Benny: he’s always wanting everything to be okay no matter the circumstance he’s in, since he doesn’t want to ever believe that all hope has been completely lost.

Disgust - Since Disgust is not just simply something like “that’s disgusting”, the wide variety of expressions that this emotion can entail means that we can understand Benny a bit more through this complex emotional framework. He’s not ashamed of being devoted to building spaceships, because it’s what he loves doing and he believes that you should never been ashamed about what makes you happy. This emotion can seem a lot more hidden, but perhaps it’s supposed to be. With the comments about how his building style is just too retro and weird and that his spaceship is not always needed, he tends to secretly believe that how he works as an individual is something to be ashamed about, as much as it conflicts with his own interests.

Sadness - Whilst not one to make attempts to avoid the emotion at all costs like some of the other characters (for all of their own reasons), Benny’s expression of sadness seems to be the worst when it comes to certain dramatic moments. But his capacity for it cannot be left at that. Whilst he does show it at times, the times where it’s less noticeable doesn’t equate it to having less of an existence. From his actions we witness on film, Benny reacts with sadness to what can be put into two main categories:

- Rejection.

- Loss of someone dear to him.

Since it’s constantly reiterated how much he loves building spaceships, it only makes sense to understand that any barrier to that action means he’s not at all his usual bubbly self. It goes the same way for when someone in his life disappears, whether it’s for an undetermined amount of time or it’s actually a permanent thing. After all, his two biggest passions (hard to forget just how much he sees them as his biggest priorities besides) in his life are his friends and his love for spaceships. Take either (or both, for that matter) of those away from him, and you’ve got someone who’s not feeling great (doesn’t stop him from being positive though - he’s always one to try to see the brighter side of everything).

Conclusion

Benny happens to be the type of person whose life revolves around a couple of what he regards as very important things: his love for his friends and his passion for spaceships. It makes sense then that those are the two main points in his mind that the emotions orbit around. However, being someone of both a resilient and optimistic nature, it isn’t always the case that he descends into a prolonged state of hopelessness. He will always be on the lookout for a bright light, no matter the intensity and vastness of the darkness that he’s in. This can often be a vulnerability of his due to his lack of acceptance that there’s probably no way out, but he believes its his right to have the determination to protect what he loves the most. Besides, despite getting frustrated at things, he’s always willing to understand what others see as important to them even if there are things he loves that he just wouldn’t have the strength to sacrifice.

Spaceman Benny character information from The Lego Movie: The Essential Guide

Is there a separate universe or something about the LEGO Spacemen/women?

Not exactly? You see, Lego is sort of usually all over the place with stuff like lore and continuity, so I’ll start at the beginning.

A long time ago in the distant time of 1978 (x) Lego starts releasing themed sets containing minifigures, such as castle and more importantly for the purpose of this essay, Space (x). 

Now the Lego Space theme is broken up into a lot of sub-themes, such as but not limited to: Classic Space (x), Futuron (x), Space Police II (x), Life on Mars (x), and Galaxy Squad (x).

But the main one I’m gonna focus on for the “lore” is Classic Space. 

Classic Space started in 1978 over it’s ten year run released 5 different colored astronauts. In 1978 there was Red Classic Spaceman (x) and White Classic Spaceman (x), then in 1979 there was Yellow Classic Spaceman (x), and in 1984 there was Blue Classic Spaceman (x) and Black Classic Spaceman (x). Now according to the Classic Space theme creator each of these figures represent different jobs, and I compiled it all into this handy graphic that I tend to over use:

So from the Classic Space sets the lore is that there’s 5 separate astronauts who all have different jobs.

Now in 1983 Lego did produce a comic known as Jim Spaceborn The Unknown Galaxy, and you can read more about that here (x), now that is it’s own universe, but it’s really worth looking into.

So then for like 30 years went by and this lore was kind of forgotten, but then a certain movie got produced (x), that featured the Blue Classic Spaceman as a  secondary tritagonist in the movie. And the movie ended up building a bunch of lore around him, and subsequently the other Classic Space astronauts.

So now the Blue Classic Spaceman is known as Benny, an interesting minifigure that was intentionally made to be appear broken (in reference to the fact that the helmets of the Classic Space Astronauts didn’t hold up all that well and cracked easily).  His description from Lego .com states: “This ‘70s era spaceman suffers from a cracked helmet and lack of oxygen.” And I don’t know how canon this is to the lore, but in the original script to the Lego Movie Benny talks about how he was stranded in space and had a friend named Moppy (a regular mop that Benny would sort of do a ventriloquist act for). And in the movie all featured Lego Astronauts are shown to be able to just sort of float whenever, so gravity doesn’t really affect them.

Now what about all those other Classic Space astronauts? Well the Lego Movie video game lets you play as the Red Classic Spaceman, who’s name is stated to be Denny. Then Lego does the “Emmet’s Award Show” (which I believe was done because the Lego Movie wasn’t nominated for best animated at the Oscars or something) and in that video it’s shown that Benny is siblings with the White Classic Spaceman and the Red Classic Spaceman (x). 

Then in 2018 a bunch of Lego Movie 2 sets were released, including Benny’s Space Squad (x), which listed names for the other astronauts, Jenny for the White Classic Spaceman, Kenny for the Yellow Classic Spaceman, and Lenny for the new Pink Classic Spaceman. Well I don’t know if Lenny is actually a Classic Spaceman, is he just a Spaceman? 

Speaking of Lenny there was an official post made by Lego showing him and Benny holding up two pieces of a heart together:

Which sort of implies they’re together? That’s cool yo.

In conclusion: I don’t really think there’s separate universe for the for the Lego Spacemen, it’s just of an amalgamation of various pieces of trivia stated over the years and the Lego Movie lore.
