Remember the Horror, not the Hero
Remembrance day, a day that has irked me to such an extent that I feel the need to write a courtly worded blog post addressed to any poor sod that stumbles upon this.
The act of remembrance is important, let me state this from the start, the ability to learn from past mistakes is important, and I think the general consensus is that wars can be categorised under 'mistakes'. War, in my opinion, should not be touted as a solution. It is not a solution, merely a way to justify having a presence in a country that doesn't share the same social, and possibly even economic views as The West. Perhaps in the case of WWI and WWII there was an exception to be made, but to me this does not describe why we couldn't concern ourselves with protecting our shores rather than, seemingly, everyone else in Europe.
The issue that I have found with Remembrance day is that instead of focusing on the terrible brutality of both sides, it glorifies the killers and the killed as hero's. WWI and WWII have both happened now and there is nothing that will change that, however by remembering them as hero's you are glorifying nothing other than state sanctioned murder. If War is something bad (which it is) then why don't we remember it as bad, remove the word hero entirely. I want to see a remembrance day in which we mourn the loss of good men and women that were sent far from their home, to live in appalling conditions and do the bidding of faceless leaders. Where no one is glorified for killing others or not being killed by others. Then we can teach future generations that there are alternatives to war.
Only through dialogue will the world become a better more people friendly place, through trying to understand what your fellow man aspires to be. I shall leave you with this.
