Foods Best Friend: Lucky Dog Hot Sauce
WHO: Scott Zalkind - Lucky Dog Hot Sauce WHAT: Seriously the BEST HOT SAUCE ON EARTH WHERE: WEB - TWITTER - FACEBOOK - INSTAGRAM
I met Scott Zalkind, owner of Lucky Dot Hot Sauce "Foods Best Friend", through a friend of a friend on Facebook a few years ago. This is back when he was still making hobby sauce in his home kitchen. Our friend suggested we meet and trade our delicious wares. I was immediately a fan of this frickin amazing hot pepper sauce! Seriously the flavor profiles rock and are some of the most versatile sauces I've ever had.
This stuff goes on ANYTHING. It's great on egg sandos, Mexican Food, Steak, Chili, Bloody Mary's etc. Want a cool refreshing kick, add this to your next garden Salad!!
In the 22 months since Scottsauce took his brand to market he has won 23 industry awards including Including Back to Back Golden Chile awards for "Mild" at Zestfest and 2013's iloveitspyc.coms Product Line of the Year!
My current favorite is the Black Label that brings the heat with the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper, and adds an amazing sweetness with the mission figs and organic apples. Using fruit instead of sugar brings a balance in this sauce that is second to none in my opinion.
He keeps rocking out the sauces too and his next flavor is just around the corner. Dia Del Perro(aka Day of the Dog) sounds like another winner and he calls it "a savory alderwood-smoked medium heat taqueria-style table sauce". Its got tomatillos, roasted garlic and toasted onions for a seriously grubbin green sauce!! You can be one of the first people to try this new sauce because Scott has just launched his KIckStarter campaign to replace his now broken down delivery vehicle. Check out his Kickstarter campaign here and get some sauce!!

Now that you know a little about what Lucky Dog Hot Sauce is, lets get to know Scott a little. Onward to the questions!
1. What was the first hot sauce you fell in love with and why?
Has to be The Cheech, Gnarly Garlic - it was different, and had heaps of garlic. I'm not usually into snappy/tangy sauces, but this was soooo good on pizza. Super mild though - I wished it was hotter. Loved the flavor though.
2. Last meal on earth, what are you eating and who made it?
Thai food - family style. Tom Yum Guy, pork pad see yew, green curry chicken, panang beef (sp?) oh yeah - all made by Bua Thong in Burlingame, CA.
3. If you could visit anywhere in the world where would that be and why would you pick that place?
Humboldt County, north of Arcata. I used to live up that way and I love it there. I've travelled a lot, so the next vacation I go on I'd like to get back to the peaceful woods of the northwest.
4. I know you have skills in the kitchen, besides multiple award winning hot sauces, what kinda magic are you working with a pan?
I rock a few dishes in the pan - lately I've been gettin down with my cast iron skillet. Everyone should have one. Fajitas are great under the broiler - sauteed onions, garlic, bell peppers, a couple serranos and thin sliced marinated chicken or beef - mmmmm.
5. What was your first ever music album/tape/cd purchased? Any favorite memories from that?
Led Zeppelin 4 (ZoSo/Untitled/the 4th?) - went to Tahoe with a group when I was a kid. Another kid had a bunch of his parents tapes and I had a walkman - I listened to that tape until my batteries died....twice. Back to back to back to back - it was like seeing your first sunset or tasting beer for the 1st time. That is a wonderful memory - outdoors, lake tahoe and discovering the greatest rock band in history all in one weekend.
6. Whats the nicest thing someone you don't know has done for you?
Sent me the American flag that was flying over an army base in Iraq as thanks for my sending them hot sauce in a care package. I was shocked.
7. Tell us one of your fondest memories of creating an awesome hot sauce!
At my market in Hayward, CA I have a sizable following of regular customers. One family loves my Red Label - and when I won The Hot Pepper overall award for hot sauce, they came by to ask where the trophy was a few weeks later. I explained that they sent a certificate, not a trophy. A few weeks later the family came by and the little boy handed me a trophy they made for me because they thought the Red Label deserved a trophy. I display it proudly with all of my biggest awards on my market tables. It's very special.
8. You just won the lottery 5 minutes ago, what are you doing to tonight?
Going to sleep around 9:45 so I can be up at 6 for my farmer's market. As I drift off I'm probably grinning ear to ear as I plan out the next 10 flavors and regional expansion.
Bonus Question: Now that you've tried it what are your thoughts on GreenLight Jerky?
It's hands down my favorite beef jerky, and I'm a total jerky snob. I love old school jerky - I know companies make more money by selling wet-style jerky, and I can't stand that. With Green Light the flavors are on point and I get a lot of jerky for my money. PRD, Garlic Parm, A Bit Spicy, Pepper Grinder - I love them all. As long as Green Light Jerky is making stuff, I'll be eating it!
