Sometimes your mind and heart will trick you into prioritizing things you need to deal with in the moment. The reality is more complicated. Sometimes your mind and heart are so busy dealing with something that they have no capacity to deal with more - and that marginal discomfort will feel like the world. The trick is to recognize the difference and, as best as you can, focus on what's REALLY taking over your spirit.

I don’t follow you on any social media because I guess I don’t know you like that but every now and again I come across a fb post or a tweet or something and I have to say that I greatly admire you and very much enjoy you sharing your thoughts with the world. the things you have to say make me feel safer and happier, you invite me to question and wonder and grow. may allah bless you in this life and in the next.

Forget for a second the instances where police officers actually save lives because rampant crime has context and it exists on purpose. 

If the institution of police was indeed necessary, required, positive, it would, on average, affect every category of society equally and in the same way. But: who benefits the most from the existence of police? Who feels the safest? Who suffers the most from police violence? Who, and what, is it that is really protected and served?

Those most protected are those who need it the least, and those least protected are the ones who need it the most. Poor people (who are primarily POC) are purposely ghettoized. Their communities purposely receive less funding and support which, purposely, is a petri-dish for crime (not to mention purposely injected with crime catalysts like African communities injected with crack cocaine in the 70′s in the States). And how does the system deal with the conditions it manufactured? Violence, not support.

So what’s the point of police? Why do they exist? Do they make society better, or worse? And who is answering that question? And why is their answer is what it is?

How to learn things

I think my special struggle is the way I am meant to learn things. People respond to different circumstances in the same way they respond to different classrooms.

The things I really internalized about work, poverty, generosity, forgiveness, love, all came from hardship.

What it was like being poor

So, things are looking up for me financially alhamdulellah (although I have always felt rich because of all of you) and I wanted to share some of my experiences with hard times for two reasons: I had no idea how far reaching being poor can be. It affected almost every aspect of my life and I feel like sharing this might help people be less ignorant about why people are poor and how it can be a cycle that is very difficult to escape once it begins. I also feel like this might help any of you going through hard times understand your feelings and behaviours which can help you overcome, or perhaps one of you can explain to me my own feelings and behaviours in a better way than I understood them to be. Feel free to share this if you want. (Note that I had to overcome both personal and financial difficulties simultaneously which probably exacerbated the following effects)

I have a lot of things because I can’t “just buy another one later” if I end up throwing things away. That means very clustered, untidy and unproductive spaces.

When you have no money you can’t focus on anything except having no money because money means food, education, entertainment, healthcare so forget having peace of mind when your life is on the line.

When you have no money you stay at home. When you run out of things to do you eat. When you eat you need to buy more food. 

Being unable to commit to part time or wage work because I have a degree but being unable to commit to applying to full time professional work because I need to focus on scraping a living from part time or wage work.

Avoiding people because people want to hang out and go places and that costs money. I can’t keep telling people I don’t want to go out because I’m broke and I can’t keep accepting people buying me lunch.

Eventually being unable to receive phone calls from potential employers for work or doctors for (free) appointments because I could no longer afford my phone bill.

Spending the bulk of money on protein foods - cheap eggs, chicken, fish - because eating fruit and vegetables is not filling and therefore expensive. Health deteriorates.

The struggle catches up to me and I end up impulse buying take-out and sugary foods. Wallet and health take another hit.

Serious challenge of will power and self control - because money was precarious, when it was available it really challenged me. I would buy things just because deep down I felt like I wouldn’t be able to again. That goes for dessert, clothes - necessities AND luxuries I could technically afford to not buy - but very little about this behaviour was logical really.

Even with all of this going on I am still incredibly lucky and privileged to have had a mother (who is overseas) who could cover my rent and a very understanding landlord. Without her I don’t know if I would have had a roof over my head. Not everyone has family to lean on when things get tough and I was lucky to at least not have to worry about a home (and absolutely the most incredible moral support).
