Mirabeau had already noted that our poetry arose at a time when scholarly reflection was highly developed and , so he says, German poetry bears the character of a period in which reason was victorious over imagination: this is why it had to produce fruit rather than flowers. So our poets do not only combine scholarship with their poetic activity; their poetic development is directly conditioned by the progress of their research.
