Batman movies don’t always have to be super realistic and grounded they can be a little fantastical and still be serious. He fights a toxic clown couple, a woman who controls plants and calls them her babies, a giant blob of living clay, Calendar Man, Condiment King, KITE MAN, MUSIC MEISTER. Batman quite possibly has the most RIDICULOUS roster of villains of any street-level hero. James Gunn please let his movie be campy and let him have his dry humor and not just be completely emotionless.

Unpopular opinion (I think? It seems unpopular) Zack Snyder is not a bad director. If you ignore the fact that he was mischaracterizing existing characters in the Snyderverse JL movies, they're actually like. Not terrible? Like they're not bad as movies. The problem is that Snyder's writing and directing style didn't really fit the characters he was working with and made them feel inaccurate.

Snyder's style was not built for Superman, he probably would've been better off directing an Injustice movie.

Like, Snyder also directed Watchmen, and Watchmen was one of the most faithful adaptations l've ever seen of a comic. It was an objectively well directed movie and (at least in my opinion) the characters feel like themselves. And that's because the themes of Watchmen fit Zack Snyder's preferred style of movie. Actually if you look at the themes of Watchmen (dark, gritty superhero movie about heroes who are maybe not as virtuous as they seem and sometimes abuse their power), you can see them reflected with Snyder's JL. The problem isn't the director it's the material he was working with being incompatible with his style.

Zack Snyder is built to write and direct anti-heroes. Characters where you're not quite sure how good of people they are. The problem is that he was given the Trinity, which are characters that are such painfully, deeply good and altruistic people. Batman gets closer to a character that would be good for him, but he's still not far enough. That's why his Batman kills and is cruel (why is he branding people?) and reactionary and it feels wrong. That's why his Superman is bleak and hopeless and it feels weong. That's why his Wonder Woman is a punch-first type, a soldier before a diplomat, and it feels wrong.

If he didn't happen to be using Bruce, Kal, and Diana, who have established characterizations and personalities that are contradictory to what Snyder made, his movies' stories actually wouldn't have been half bad.
