In hindsight, maybe Ceb should've told someone which direction he was going before becoming hopelessly lost in the palace. Maybe that way when someone, most likely his husband, noticed him missing then they could ask, and someone would know where he was, and then come find him.

But no. Not Ceb. Not this proud hybrid! Gotta be bold, stubborn, go off on his own, be his own Gelfling.

Maybe this is why he wasn't permitted to be a guard for the Lords of the Crystal.

"Did I go this way already..?" Ceb asked himself aloud, not noticing the figure approaching.

“Oh, I wondered what that smell was.. it’s a little Gelfling wandering alone in this part of the Castle..” skekChi held back a disgusted hiss as he looked the Gelfling up and down to get a good look at him, “if you’re sneaking around you’re not doing a very good job of it.”

Ceb pressed his hands over his mouth to stifle a yelp, and backpedaled away from the much taller individual.

"M-My Lord! I-um," As the freckled gelfling bowed, the thought suddenly occurred to him how this probably looked from the Skeksis perspective. He wasn't a guard, wasn't dressed like a guard, and more than likely roaming halls that were probably quite forbidden to Gelfling.

"This looks worse than it actually is, I swear!"

“You’re clearly not dressed like a guard, are you off duty and wandering? The General wont like that.” The Taxidermist continued to approach Ceb one slow step at a time. He had a smirk plastered across his toothy face, he seemed to genuinely enjoy watching the Gelfling sweat.

“I’m listening to whatever excuse you can come up with,” he said as he folded his long, slender arms across his equally long, slender torso, “though be warned, if I don’t believe what you’re saying I’ll be happy to mount your head on my bedroom wall.”

"U-Um, no. Not Exactly, My Lord." Ceb dared to nervously laugh, and anxiously played with the long tangled braid of dark blue streaked, messy mahogany curls that hung over his shoulder. At some point the braid Früll had spent nearly all morning trying to tye it back, it seemed that the Drenchen's little tricks with taming manes proved to be no match for his small husband's wild Sifan curls. He tried to keep his emotional focus elsewhere to keep from crumbling or acting out in front of the higher being, but when Skekchi mentioned the General.... All Ceb could think about was Früll being unfairly punished by the cruel bastard.

"No!!" The Sifan/Stonewood gelfling's head jerked up and wide blue eyes met Skekchi's.

"Please, I'm begging you, do not tell the General! What I do wrong isn't my husband's debt to pay!" The freckled gelfling realized how he sounded and quickly backpedaled as he hung his head.

"I-I'm not a guard... They wouldn't let me in... I'm here because I'm married to one of the guards... I'm just--- A hybrid creature, With very poor sense of direction. As I'm sure you've noticed."

Oh wowie, instead of studying make animation! Wanted to practice coloring with the Clip Studio animation department. And wanted to animate him sneezing and shaking his head.

I need to work on getting that snappy head shake animals do. I like animating these birdos, I want to do more.

The Seladon Issue

I’ve seen some stuff recently, mostly on dark crystal fb groups, that Seladon’s plan to sacrifice a few gelfling was basically the same as the skeksis committing genocide, or that Seladon was consciously playing a role in the genocide of her own people. So I’m gonna talk a bit about why that’s not true, and the significance of that throne room scene to the narrative.

So, did Seladon want the gelfling genocide? Did she consciously play apart in it by offering a handful of gelfling to the skeksis? Was her only motivation gaining power?

Well….no

She was planning on sacrificing a few lives to prevent a larger genocide. She believes that only she can make that decision, because as leader of the gelfling people she sees it as her job to do it. She has to prevent the complete eradication of her people at the cost of a few, because in her mind the end justifies the means. That’s part of why that scene with the skeksis is so terrifying because she genuinely believes that if she offers a few lives the skeksis will be satisfied, but then as they keep telling her no she slowly realises they intend on complete eradication no matter what she offers, which is why she gets more desperate and keeps offering them more gelfling until the point in which she’s begging them to at least spare her family. Seladon knows the skeksis could kill all the gelfling, and that appeasing them would be smarter than fighting. Even Skeksil tells Rian this in carriage scene, that sacrificing a few would be the smarter choice, because the skeksis won’t hesitate to eliminate the gelfling if they rebel:

I mean they killed her mother for rebelling, she knows firsthand what they’re capable of. She’s acting out of a need to survive, not genuine malice for her people. Also the fact that she specifically begs for her family’s life shows that she’s learnt from what happened with the All-Maudra, the skeksis have already killed her mother, what’s to say they won’t come after her sisters next? She knows they can’t stand up against the skeksis and survive (and they don’t lol spoiler alert) Most importantly, after they kill her mother, they thank her for her loyalty in exposing a traitor. They don’t make a move to kill her, Seladon understands from this scene that loyalty = survival:

During the throne room scene however, Seladon realises slowly that her loyalty does not mean survival, and she’s reduced from bargaining to begging with the skeksis. And finally, when her sister dies, she realises that her loyalty to the skeksis has actually caused the one thing she was trying to prevent by siding with them in the first place: the death of her family. This is when she has a major turn around:

The throne room scene and Seladon’s arc is truly a testament to how much power the skeksis have over the gelfling, and how unequal their dynamic is. She thinks that she has some kind of power as the new All Maudra that puts her on equal footing with them, and that by staying loyal she will be protected. She thinks she can bargain with them, but as Skekso continually shoots down her ideas (while continuously laughing at her) she starts to panic as she realises that the gelfling never had any real power or control, it’s all an illusion. The skeksis ALLOW her to be All-Maudra, they have the real power. And they demonstrate this when they mock her, by taking off her crown and ripping her dress, and acting generally like middle school bullies:

Seladon is so vulnerable in this scene because we realise she isn’t some evil politically savvy queen who’s betraying her people for power, she’s just a young woman who’s lost her mother, who’s realising her whole life was a lie, and is literally begging her oppressors to spare her life and her families life.

Ultimately Seladon’s motivation is survival, not power. Her redemption arc comes when she realises her actions have caused the very things she was trying to prevent.
