How fucking dare you. How dare you, Scott Morrison, sit in your tax payer funded office and deny climate change. Deny funding for the RFS. Deny compensation for exhausted, overworked fire fighters. Deny people a future on this planet.
Three volunteer fire fighters dead. Three young men, most recently a twenty-eight year old with a pregnant wife. Australian citizens dead. Endangered wildlife dead. Hundreds upon hundreds of homes lost. Thousands more structures gone.
Millions of hectares burned, and no rain in sight.
Australia has had its hottest day on record this year. Then the next day broke that record. And then the day after that. This morning, at 8:00am, a town had already reached 49 degrees celcius. Skies have turned black at midday, clouded with smoke and flames blocking out the sun.
My sister is a volunteer fire fighter. She does not get paid. She gets two days of paid leave from her government job. The only protection for her lungs that she is supplied with is a disposable mask. She stares down thirty metre (+) tall flames without hesitation and you had the audacity, without shame, to say that she wants to be there. She has a fourteen year old son. When she goes to a fire we don’t know if she’s alive until she can find time to send a message to us. We might not even hear from her until she gets home, sometimes twelve hours later. She does not want to be there, yet she does it because, if people don’t volunteer, there would be no one else to fight these fires. To save lives.
You took a vacation to Hawaii while we burned. Then you couldn’t even walk on the scorched earth. To save face, you got in a chopper and viewed the destruction from above. You spent thousands on a chopper ride, but you deny funding to essential emergency services, to people who have lost everything.
I have never been more ashamed of the leader of my country. I am disgusted, and I’m angry.
