The Hokage had judged their abilities complementary enough to be a two man cell for a bodyguard mission. Hinata was a nice teammate to have. She was capable and didn't seem to mind his silences. Everything had gone smoothly and on the way back to Konoha they had cut through a forest instead of the long way around it. Night was falling already but they decided to look for a place to camp by the water. The trees let way to smaller plants and bushes. Ferns were everywhere and soon they came to a waterfall and a lake.
Sasuke recognised the place. "I've come with my team here once before"
Hinata nodded, she seemed to familiar with the place as well.
They scouted the place.
"Naruto told me that last time he came here as a genin he saw a water fairy dancing in the moonlight..."
"A fairy!?"
Sasuke snorted at Hinata's incredulous tone. "What, a girl like you doesn't believe in magic?"
He turned to see her face, but instead of the stoic Hyuga expression she made when they disagreed, she was blushing deeply.
Interesting.
"So, you don't think we will see the fairy dancing tonight?"
"Definitely not!"
Sasuke laughed.

Summary: Over a year after the war, Konoha is broken and unstable. Hinata is barely keeping herself afloat when the Hokage gives her a mission only she can seemingly fulfill: escort a mysterious boy from Suna to the new territory of Negakure. As she soon discovers, the infamous Uchiha Sasuke, traitor of the leaf, is the founder of this new village, and he is not at all what she expects him to be.
This has been an idea I've had since, say, 2022? I never got the courage to write it until I saw the prompts for this year's SHMonth Theme ... and I KNEW I had to write it!
I wanted to do a bit of a reverse on the stereotypical sasuhina fic: Sasuke being his brooding, angsty self, and Hinata's calm and healing energy being the push he needs to better himself. In this fic, Hinata is the one who needs the push in the right direction, and Sasuke is an unwilling participant (well ... unwilling at first).
This is ... slightly enemies to lovers. If you squint.
More so, I think this is two characters (hurt in their own ways) realizing that they have a lot in common, and in that comradery blooms love. You'll notice that the language of flowers is used somewhat literally in this fic -- which is purposeful. In a post-war reality, I don't think emotionally stunted child soldiers would be able to perfectly articulate every thought and feeling in their minds. Sometimes, they must rely on the language of others; in this case, flowers.
You'll find this fic is very angst-heavy in the beginning, but (in usual, Piano fashion) things get lighter.
