Background:

Samael Lyle was born a rather unfortunate Halloween, not that the Lyle family celebrated Halloween of course, to the Dr and his wife. As a young child, he had a rather severe stutter and intense sensory issues that were eventually ‘trained’ out of him. Closed off from the real world, Samael struggled to find what he craved most - praise and recognition - and so sought it in his father. Despite being unable to properly give him that praise, Thomas Lyle decided to use his son as an asset. When his first subject ran away (Samael’s sister Clover), and Jackson refused to retrieve her, Samael was tasked with her capture. In his endeavour to win his father’s favour, he obeyed and brought her back, only to watch her be killed by the man he had brought her back to, subsequently driving a wedge between him and his brother. The distance between them only grew as Jackson became “Subject B” and Samael became jealous of the attention he was getting. When he finally managed to escape with the rest of their siblings, Samael refused to run with them, seeing this as his chance to get what he had always wanted. Known as “Subject C” now, he became his father’s first successful experiment, completely subservient to him and able to heal from just about anything so long as he has a suffecient amount of energy. Still, Thomas continued to speak about what a perfect subject Jackson would have been had he been able to finish what he started and one of the few emotions that Samael had been permitted to feel - jealousy - only grew stronger. He served his father to the best of his ability, eventually becoming separated when his father was attacked and he got shot in the head protecting him. He woke in a morgue a few months later, the bullet no longer in his head but with Dr Lyle now in hiding. Whilst still searching for the man he felt he owed everything to, he fulfilled his need to serve by becoming ‘Anything for Hire’, travelling as he worked.

He stared at the wine for a brief moment, considering it before realising it was being offered to him. He took it from the other’s hand, holding it for him, looking comfortable enough but never appearing to take a sip.

“I am not supposed to feel pain sir.” He replied, although he knew he did, he always did. But he’s been told he shouldn’t and he had to follow orders.

“It can sound however you like sir.” He responded eventually. He wouldn’t outright disagree with a client, they were superiors and to do that would be to go against his programming so it was her to agree after the initial correction.

“That’s good sir. That means I’m being useful.” He smiled just slightly as Corinthian told him he was interested. Those sorts of words usually lead to pain but that was okay, he wasn’t supposed to feel pain anyway.

He followed the other inside, always tow steps behind and one step to the left, keeping in pace til they entered the room and he halted, waiting for instruction. “If you’d like me to have a drink sir, I will.”

“I never said I was a hitman sir, I said I was a weapon for hire.” He replied with a slight cock of his head, following dutifully after him. Whilst Samael was blunt, he also knew how not to get caught by those who would stop him being useful. Leave no evidence, never speak of his job outright or discuss job details with people other than his employer and nothing would be traced back to him.

Besides, he didn’t legally exist.

“I hand them out to those who are interested sir. You expressed interest.” He gave him another one of those reassuring smiles, settling back into himself now that he was likely to be hired.

“No sir.” He replied, unsure why that was so difficult to believe. Fun was just a byproduct of reality, or existence, it wasn’t useful and didn’t really matter so why did he care if he had it?

He perked up at the idea of a job, looking towards the stranger with more rapt attention. “Yes sir, I am.” Came his reply with a rather quick nod. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a business card with his name, the words ‘weapon for hire’ and his asking rate on it. The number was significantly smaller than what you’d expect for what the man was offering, but he didn’t seem too phased.

His eyebrows furrowed at the question. Was this a trick? Was someone waiting just around the corner to reprimand him for breaking the rules, for going against what he was.

“I don’t have fun sir. In my spare time I focus on training and upkeep, other than that I search for more people to hire me” he finally replied, expect there was a twinge of coldness to his voice that wasn’t there before.

“Is there anything else sir? I am rather busy and need to get back to my work.” He asked, stubbing his cigarette out in the palm of his hand so he could put it in the next bin he saw.

“Why would I not say what I mean? Lying is only useful if it helps me to be a proper weapon.” He replied just as bluntly as he had before, not at all seeming to grasp any sense of subtlety.

His eyes lingered on his hand for a brief moment, swallowing thickly before shaking the ex-stranger’s hand, albeit rather quickly. He did not feel pain, nor did he feel discomfort - at least he wasn’t supposed to - but touch always made his skin feel like it was clinging to his bones.

“All sorts sir. Defence work, disposal, retrieval, entertainment, housekeeping. I’m multipurpose.” There was another smile and with this one it was easier to see the cracks, the lack of light in his eyes, looking more like he was gritting his teeth than smiling.

‘Nice name’, he’d heard that phrase a couple of times and never quite understood it. How was he supposed to control how good his name was? Was is simply an indicator of his quality? He’d never been very sure but he supposed that didn’t matter.

“I am a weapon for hire sir. Although you can hire me for whatever you might like, I’ve been p-.. taught how to do a wide array of things and am quite skilful.” He caught himself before he said the word programmed, most people found that strange and he didn’t want to offput this stranger if it meant he got hired.

He wasn’t quite sure what the other was trying to say but he’d being doing this long enough to know that someone would express their displeasure if they wanted to and it was much better to keep his head down. If the strange found nothing to be wrong with him then he’d continue acting how he was.

“Samael, sir, although you can call me whatever you might like.” Another one of those strange reassuring smiles for good measure and he took a drag of his cigarette. There was no tone to his voice to indicate anything other than complete sincerity when he spoke to Corinthian, in fact there seemed to be no tone at all, just blank words.

He flicked the ash off the end of his cig and even that seemed to be neat.

He gave the man a small smile and a nod when he was offered the cigarette, placing it between his lips and lighting it. People seemed to like those little gestures; smiles and thank yous, it seemed to make them happy so whilst Samael wasn’t sure why he was doing it, he was more than fine to indulge anyway.

Inhaling, he ensured his posture was still correct. Back straightened, shoulders squared with his feet and adequate width apart. It had become second nature to him at this point but it was always good to check just in case.

“A bad day?” That confused him. A day was a day like all the others, it was an abstract thing, how could a day be bad? “Whyever would you think that, sir?”

Samael stood out front of the hotel he’d been staying in - a somewhat dingy place but habitable nonetheless - it had been difficult getting hired recently; the market had all but dried up it appeared and no one had any use for him anymore.

That was fine, he could stay and wait until someone did, until then he’d just be as helpful as possible to those around him. Which is why he’d elected to light Corinthian’s cigarette for him.

An eyebrow raised at the question before he shrugged very lightly, the padded shoulders of his admittedly cheap black suit moving up and down. “If you like, sir.” Was all he replied with, still slightly confused at the fact that he’d been offered something. He supposed the man must be a kind sort, how lucky he was to have come across him.

Eventually, Tabitha had a phone number. She hadn't been able to trace it, and she called now from an untraceable encrypted, several states out from where she and Samael were staying. He was in view, in the car. She was prepared to look away or down so he couldn't read her lips. She didn't know if he could. She waited for the line to pick up.

Thomas was working on a brand new subject in his operating theatre, attempting to see if he could increase the stamina, strength and speed of his weapons when he was told that his phone was ringing. Taking a second to put his scalpel down and pull off his gloves, he moved somewhere the screaming could scarcely be hear. “Afternoon Miss Glass, I was wondering when you might contact me. Say hello to subject F for me” He stated as he answered, a figure suddenly appearing in the alley across the street from Tabitha, raising it’s hand as if in greeting.

Samael remained silent as she snapped, resisting the urge to tense or flinch, simply staying still and staring ahead. He shouldn’t have corrected her, he was not supposed to do that, he wouldn’t do it again. “Dr Lyle did not allow me access to the files which described the process he went through in order to create his soldiers, I believe that would be the only way to reverse the affects. Subject B is in possession of copies of those files.” He stated blankly and calmly, ‘subject B’ referring to Jackson.
