Chickasaw National Recreation Area: Vol. 1

I say Vol. 1 because I know this won't be the last time I write about this beautiful place. I've visited this park many times over the years and it still amazes me every time, especially my last visit when my mom and I hiked to an area of the park neither of us had been to before.

After stopping by the Travertine Nature Center to stamp and cancel my National Parks Passport and Adventue Log, we started our hike to Buffalo Springs. According to the maps posted along the way, it would be a 0.7 mile hike. I started tracking my walking with the Samsung Health app to see how much I was going to be walking, more on that later.

Before reaching Buffalo Springs is Antelope Springs. This natural spring with the water bubbling right up out of the rock is absolutely gorgeous. This spring is a little more tucked away, but it's definitely worth spending a few moments admiring this spring.

After a few more minutes of hiking we reached our destination: Buffalo Springs. I've got to admit, this spring isn't quite as big as it looks on the park map or even the photo I took (above). But don't let that deter you from visiting this spring, this spring is still a beautiful sight to visit. It's a tranquil spot to breathe in the fresh air, listen to the murmur of the flowing water, and rest in the shade of the lush trees. After spending a few moments admiring this spring, we headed back down the trail.

Honestly, in all the years I've visited this park this is the first time I've actually hiked any of the trails in the park, but this venture was definitely worth the time and effort. Overall it was roughly a thirty minute hike round trip, but the next time I attempt this hike I'll be sure to wear proper hiking gear. At the end of the day I enjoyed exploring a part of the park I've never been to before.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is one of my favorite places in the world and I don't think it gets shown enough love. Yeah, it's a hidden gem compared to parks like Grand Canyon and Yosemite, but it's still worth putting on your radar. Learn more about Chickasaw National Recreation Area and plan your trip. So a few years ago my sister helped me buy a National Parks passport.
