Calling the Viggo nation!

I posted something I’ve been working on for a while, out of boredom or passion? Who knows. The thought of Viggo surviving Triple Cross kept gnawing at me, especially after reading @eat-your-milk ‘s Kiss The Sky (which has become my unhealthy obsession). This work is only inspired by the idea of Viggo surviving, but otherwise unrelated to the former. There is absolutely zero intention in copying!

This is the first chapter of the three I have written so far, and I have no idea where I’m going with this, like at all. And I have no idea if I will continue, but it would be a shame not to share it with y’all. So I’m doing just that.

And do you know what I like to think about? That Viggo would have grown wings either way, had he survived Triple Cross or not.

Had he not survived Triple Cross, he would’ve grown wings by passing away, the wings being his demise and redemption.

Had he survived Triple Cross, the Skrill would become his naughty little wings, ones that would forever stand by his side.

I feel like even after getting used to being blind on one eye, Viggo would still struggle occasionally, and it would set him off so much sometimes.

• Bumping into things on his blind side when he’s tired — a table, a wall, or even somebody else. When sharp and alert, he compensates well, but exhaustion lowers those defences, and that’s when those misjudgments start.

• Misreaching for objects, with his hand landing just next to the thing he’s trying to grab, bcs his depth perception is simply fvcked.

• Not being always able to catch things — when someone throws him something — because he can’t judge the distance properly, and snatches too early or misses.

• His spatial awareness worsening further in dim light or darkness.

• Not being able to track movement approaching from his blind side, which in battle is dangerous, and in daily life irritating.

• Getting headaches frequently, because compensating with only one eye tires him and tires the brain, especially when focusing on fine detail, like reading.

I could go on for ages.

The man is all about control, strength and composure, and these little mishaps would make him so upset and frustrated. Bumping into a table? That’s random, clumsy, unplanned— the opposite of who he is. Being half blind is also a vulnerability the others could exploit, and we all know how much he despises showing any weakness.

In the episodes of Shell Shocked, Ruffnut and Tuffnut mention how Viggo would actually be fun to hang with if he didn't try to kill them all the time. Can you imagine Viggo being among the chaos of the Edge? I'm telling you, he wouldn't last a week.

Ironically, Viggo finds dragons are the most sane creatures on the island.

Just a little detail I’ve noticed.

There is not a single existing scene in which Viggo doesn’t have dark bags under his eyes.

The guy is seriously overworked.

One of my most favourite, yet absolutely heart wrenching headcanons that keep me awake at night, is that Hiccup missed Viggo after his death.

Because here’s the thing. Apart from the fact Viggo sacrificed himself for Hiccup, Toothless and their cause, and apparently grew to understand and respect the creatures he once sold and killed, he was the only antagonist who truly ever matched Hiccup. The only one who could really keep up with his intellect, strategies, ways of thinking, and challenge him himself, so much they became obsessed with each other.

And I think for someone like Hiccup, who has always felt like he didn’t quite fit even among his own people, having an opponent who had the mental capacity to comprehend all of Hiccup (and being pretty much the only one), was both exhilarating and terrifying. You can come at me for saying this, but Viggo held much more respect for Hiccup’s ingenious mind than the Riders and Berkians ever did.

I personally don’t think it went as far as liking Viggo as a person. But it was about the strange way an enemy can become a mirror. And once the mirror broke by Viggo’s demise, Hiccup caught himself unconsciously staring at the pieces with a painful realization. Realization, that he misses that mind, equaling his own, that challenge, that presence and maybe if he ever let himself think for too long, he missed Viggo himself.

Important question! Do y’all think Viggo is more of an early bird or a night owl?

I’ve recently seen a post here on Tumblr saying Viggo was definitely one to struggle with insomnia and frequently experience sleep paralysis.

So, it got me thinking, he’s perhaps something like a permanently exhausted pigeon. Poor guy.

You want to know one of my favourite little details in RTTE that cracks me up every time?

In the episode Twintuition, when Viggo is interrogating Ruffnut, Ryker loses patience and knocks her cup of water over as he threatens 'Don't toy with us, girl'. If you look closely, the trajectory of that flying cup of water is headed straight for Viggo across the table. So either Viggo dodged for dear life or got drenched, both of which are hilarious mental images to me. Big Grimbro getting angry and soaking little Grimbro in the process.

Thinkin about Viggo and how in RTTE, during and after the Shell Shocked episodes, he… really went through a lot.

He likely lost his tribe to Ryker for that short amount of time, months of work and likely research, he lost his brother (who was likely the only person he could truly trust before Ryker’s betrayal), he, himself, betrayed the only people who actually wanted to make things better (even for him), he fell into a freaking volcano and was permanently scarred, both physically and mentally from it, and on top of all that, his newest “ally” (Krogan) was actively trying to murder him.

That really had to be a lot on Viggo all in that short bit of time, but despite all of it, he remained calm and collected on the surface. I can’t begin to imagine what was actually going on in his head, though…
