When Kou was a child he would fall asleep to the words of fairy tales.
With his head rested on his pillow, he heard them in Terus voice but when he closed his eyes, his dreams would conjure up vivid images. The hero, the handsome prince and love interest of the tale always looked like his big brother, the “coolest guy ever”.
In contrast, the princess never had a face.She was always a concept, an idea of a pure heart and true love that evil wishes to keep from the prince.
In Sleeping Beauty and Snow white, an evil witch put the princess into a sleep like death to which only true loves kiss could wake her and unite the lovers.
It was a simple tale, with good triumphing over evil and Kou ate it up every time, with barely contained excitement for when he could do the same as an exorcist.
At some point, when he outgrew those story books at bedtime, he'd have dreams where he's the prince instead of Teru.
He'd slay dragons and monsters with an ease of exorcists four times his age and experience.He always thought it would be so easy.So much has happened since then.Now, in his dreams started having a face.
Pink hair and biting words. The princess was just as angry at being kidnapped as she was at the prince for taking so long. Somehow the pure hearted princess started having a bad personality. Soon she stopped sounded like a girl at all, just mean crass words and a scream like a storm siren.
And yet the princess would cling to him in fear, trembling a reed in the wind. It felt so solid, the body against his own, so real.There wasn't a face yet, but there was a smile; fierce and so genuine.
Kou thought it was beautiful. Kou thought it was cute.An unfamiliar longing in Kou made him want to kiss that smile. It was different now.
Instead of the idea of pure true love, Kou found himself captivate by the beautiful soul of a person, cutting and rude as it was, it was like it were carved from diamonds with how his heart wanted it, if not only a few more moments to stare longer.It was the sort of beauty that hurt, the kind that he knew would dim the rest of his life in comparison and one he knew was fleeting.
As he holds the other close in his arms with his chin resting on pink locks and his arm wrapped around delicate shoulders, Kou thinks there's nothing he'd like more than to kiss this princess to wake her.
If she left at the stroke of midnight, Kou knows he would not rest till he found her again.
It wouldn't matter if she was a monster.
He knows in his heart that he'd turn into seafoam if it meant he could marry her.
He'd stay by her side and grant her every wish if only to see her smile.
When he awoke on his bed there were tears in his eyes, because he's certain he's found true love but his happily ever after was stolen before it could even begin.
After all, fairytales aren't real.
